It seems to me a surprising but broadly appealing approach to the Christmas issue would be to issue a fatwa as to the Broad meaning of Christmas: Christmas is for Everyone!

Why not simply embrace the facts on the ground, which appear to be that lots and lots of people celebrate Christmas in this country, and in others, who are not particularly devout Christians, or indeed are Christian in any way, shape, or form.

With that fact in mind, perhaps it should behoove our Christian leaders to gather together and issue an invitation: let all celebrate Christmas in their own way. Let Christmas be a Gift to the whole world. Indeed, is not Christmas a season of giving? So, let Christmas itself be the biggest gift of all!

Let us invite All people who want to celebrate Christmas to do just that, recognizing that in the minds of some Christmas has transmogrified into a secular folk holiday. Fine! No problem! It is a season of love and giving betewwen friends and family, with delightful traditions of Christmas trees, gifts, and scrumptious feasting. One needn't be a dyed-in-the-wool Christian to celebrate this holiday, which means different things to different people. But, what it means is invariably benign and good.

Come, one, come all! No preaching, no proselytizing, no vetting of religious convictions. Christmas is a gift from the Christain world to the world at large, to be celebrated by all in the Christmas spirit: warmth, happiness, thanksgiving. No doctrine required.

That might take the wind out of some dark sails.

Merry christmas!

Ahhhh, how much I love reading articles that remind me of why I joined this forum in the first place. Thank you, Mr Wheeler. I just want to say this in the form of a mild correction - according to the No Child Left Behind Act, a child's religious life does not end at the school house door. Accordingly, only the SCHOOLS cannot celebrate Christmas - HOWEVER, the NCLB act explicity states that the schools CANNOT STOP a child and/or his/her parents from holding Christmas celebrations in school. YES, that's correct. Read the part of the Act that is entitled, "Prayer In School". Yes, prayer in school is allowed too. See, the liberals know this. And they don't want us to know it. This is the real reason they hate the No Child Left Behind Act - not just because it forces the schools of America to form a standardized proof that education actually happened in our classrooms - but also because a child's ''religious burden'' is specifically addressed, and schools know they MUST allow children time out from school to address those religious commitments - whether that's by going to a mosque for Ramadan, or by letting children out of school so they can learn religous Christmas carols for their Christmas pageant - which by the way, NO SCHOOL CAN STOP A CHILD FROM HAVING - IF THE CHILD ASKS FOR IT!!!! It's in the Act, under the section, "Prayer in School".
Mr Wheeler, how about doing an in-depth article on this little-known fact?

As for Christmas itself, the message of Christmas is 'Peace on earth, good will to all." Now, who can be against peace and good will?
