This thread discusses the Content article: THE ARCTIC OCEAN PIE
OK, hot stuff, and a fitting end to your recent trek of discovery series. As a Canuk this of particular interest to me. The recent Russian stunt is just that, a jingoistic stunt that will settle nothing. One hopes that the dictates of Geology plus the Rule of Law will finally settle matters. But who or what will be the deciding authority? The UN and the International Court of Law (The Hague) would be the reflexive choice, but like you I have some doubts about these budding Uber-Bureaucracies. "Settling out of court" as you suggested is likely the best formula. If only Putin will be sensible enough, Tatar bully that he be.

Has this story ever been published? This would make a great magazine series or book.

You do beat all... Imagine free-falling over the pole!
When I make my pile I am going to take up some of these adventures you recommend. Just not the pole...I can't stand cold...

Jack,
Maybe you'll go down in the Guinness Book for most "coolest" things accomplished in a lifetime.
WHAT HAVEN''T YOU DONE?
I said it before and I'll say it again,; you're Indian Jones on steroids.
I hope your sons carry on your legacy, cause your something special Jack. They'll be a shot in the arm for America. Is there a President(s) among them?
On to the Ruskies and Rooty-Toot (Napoleon complex) Putin.
Is he going to try and use this dubious claim for future provocations with the West and the United States in particular?
After all, the North American Union is a forgone conclusion and Putin has just landed the vacant Czar Position posted on the Russian version of Monster.com/Mobster.com.
Seems to me there’s real trouble on the horizon with this little flag stunt. The runt hates to be made fun of, it torments his Megalomaniacal mindset. He’s being roundly ridiculed by countries like Canada and European cream puffs for peat’s sake.
And let’s not forget the TRILLIONS of dollars at stake. The US & Mexico will have access to all of Canada‘s stake since were merging and Greenland is controlled by US-friendly Denmark. Not to mention Mexico's reserves. Staggering!
The NAU poses a threat to Putin because of the consolidation of resources by the United States.
The US over doubles in size (without firing a shot) and adds only 140 million people in the process. The amount of energy and natural resources like oil, natural gas, minerals and water the US will have access to is staggering.
I have always agreed with the concept of the NAU because I believe it an extension of our Manifest Destiny as a nation. I'm against how they're keeping Americans in the dark about their REAL intentions as they rob and steal from us hand-over-fist.
America is the dominant player by light years over Canada and Mexico. Our form of Governance MUST prevail, not sold away by faceless bureaucrats far from public scrutiny. That’s the dinner table stuff I spoke of.
The US-dominated NAU can be a world alternative to Russia and OPEC and Putin wants to control the World’s energy supply. Something's gotta give
Think of all the money that WON”T go to Islamists bent on our destruction or the Russian mobsters.
We have to drill everywhere and build refineries immediately. I wish GWB would sign an Executive Order and Liberals be damned. He’ll do more for securing America’s future than anything he has done to this point, but I digress.
I’ll bet Don Putin carries a chip on his shoulder over world reaction to his stunt. I wonder how The Godfathers’ going to dispatch his enemies this time? Don Putin is artistic at ”whacking” people. What will he think of next? “Plutonium Hit”, nah, been there, done that, go the t-shirt and the video. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Is little Napoleon coming out of the bag on this North Pole stunt? Does the US have a great deal to fear by this provocation from Czar Vladdy?
With the NAU on the horizon and your suggested treaty a possibility Jack, how does a megalomaniacal midget like Putin react?

Post edited by: cephran, at: 2007/08/04 12:28

The one who obeys “golden rule” would get the biggest bite of the Arctic Ocean Pie.
Gold and cash backed by it may do miracles in completely frozen territory. As future occupants of the White House are concern, regardless who gets the quarter, the primary task will be to keep creditors happy.

It is (almost) pitiful to see Russia continue its expansionist tendencies, while in a death spiral of negative population growth. How can they prevent China or Iran from waltzing in and seizing much of Siberia, and now the artic??

Oh sweet sorrow.

GW uses his brains....he will and so will Presidential Nominee Rudy Giuliani.

Just one more thought. The idea of assigning sovreignty to all the Polar area to individual countries, rather than leaving it a sort of "open sea" is something that should be more widely applied, in my humble opinion. There is that concept of which you've all heard called "the tragedy of the commons", which states that territory which is amorphously "belonging to everyone" in truth belongs to no one and thus is far more likely to be neglected and abused. A piece of real estate under clear ownership is conversely more likely to be managed well. Introducing solid rule of Law and property rights will do any expanse of ocean a world of good. And yep, I don't think that a scatter brained UN bureaucracy would be up to the job.

Dr. Jack:
Indiana Jones cannot light a candy cane next to you- thanks for another nice story.
If the Russians keep giving the world trouble maybe we could send our new tough guy after them: Obama. I do not know if you heard but Obama wants to send US troops to Pakistan to deal with the terrorists there.
Ralph Peters was on Fox cutting Obama up to pieces including giving geopolitical, geographical and military lessons. It was great.
The bad news although not shocking: the evil woman is surging ahead. The election is going to be quite a show.

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant, Jack! Unlike your description of Lake Toba in Sumatra, though, this article evokes absolutely no desire in me to visit 90 degrees north.
