CHINESE SPY CASE SHEDS LIGHT ON STATE-LEVEL SECURITY WOES

The arrest of New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s former aide Linda Sun this week has shown the vulnerability of state governments in navigating Chinese interference attempts while Beijing is actively targeting them, top intelligence experts say.

Sun worked at the New York State (NYS) government for more than ten years during Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Hochul’s tenures, including as Hochul’s deputy chief of staff.

She was arrested and charged on Sept. 3 with violating and conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act, visa fraud, alien smuggling, and money laundering conspiracy. Her husband Chris Hu was also arrested and charged with separate offenses.

Sun, a naturalized U.S. citizen who immigrated from China when she was five, was accused of doing the bidding of four Chinese Consulate officials and two Chinese Communist Party (CCP) agents.

This included blocking communications between the NYS government and representatives of Taiwan, screening the governors’ messages to keep out references of Taiwan’s official name and human rights atrocities against the Uyghur people, smuggling a Chinese consulate official into a private NYS government conference call, and providing unauthorized invitation letters for Chinese provincial delegates to fraudulently obtain U.S. visas—for monetary and other benefits worth millions of dollars, mostly via her husband’s business.

The case has exposed a glaring security problem, according to two intelligence experts who both held a number of senior national security roles in government.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY – ON THE MATTERHORN SUMMIT AGAIN WITH MY SON

jw-bw-on-matterhornWhen my son Brandon turned 14, he asked me, “Dad, you climbed the Matterhorn at 14. Could we climb the Matterhorn together now that I’m 14?” It was 1998 and I was 54. I didn’t think I could do it, but his request meant more than the world to me, so I agreed. Each with our own bergführer guide, he breezed up, but it was a real struggle for me.

He made it, my guide didn’t think I could, so after summiting, Brandon came back down to get me. We climbed the last 500 feet together. Thus here we both are on the summit of the world’s most famous mountain. There are no words to come close to expressing what this means to each of us. THE SNAKE WALLS OF KHIVA

khiva-snake-wallsThe inner city of the ancient Silk Road oasis of Khiva has been unchanged for centuries. Surrounding 40ft-high snake walls that writhe around the city have protected it for centuries, enabling defenders to shoot, spear, and pour burning hot oil on attackers from three sides.

Khiva’s labyrinth of narrow lanes adorned with blue and aquamarine tile mosaics is a living museum for you to explore. On the Oxus or Amu Darya River in deepest Central Asia, Khiva was ancient when Alexander the Great seized it in 329 BC.

It survived the depredations of Arabs in the 8th century, Mongols in the 13th, Tamerlane in the 14th. The Khanate of Khiva continued to flourish on the Silk Road until conquered by the Russians in the 19th. Today in Uzbekistan, it remains as the best-preserved of the ancient oases of the Silk Road, yet unknown to the outside world.

It need not remain unknown to you, however. We were just here two years ago, and will be here again soon. Join us and make Khiva a part of your life.(Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #226 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

THE WORLD’S BIGGEST MONEY

rai-currencyWe’re on the island of Yap in Micronesia – some 500 miles southwest of Guam and 1,200 miles east of Manila in the Western Pacific. The Yapese have lived here for over 2,000 years, and have maintained their culture and traditions to this day.

Phenomenal navigators in their outrigger canoes, in ancient times they began sailing to Palau over 250 miles south to quarry large sections of limestone and return to stone-chisel them into circles with a hole in the middle (through which world put a long pole for carrying them.

Called Rai, they have been Yap’s currency for two millennia. The ones you see here are typical size but many are much larger, weighing as much as a car. Rai are the world’s biggest money – used not for day-to-day transactions but large ones like a bride’s dowry and wedding party, or a real estate deal.

The Yapese are a proud and peaceful people who live by their code of Respect and Responsibility. They are warm and welcoming to visitors. A 90-minute flight from Guam makes it easy to get here. Spending time with these special people will be life-memorable. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #216 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

SPITUK GOMPA

gompaThe Tibetan Monastery or “Gompa” of Spituk overlooks the Upper Indus as it flows out of Chinese Tibet and towards Baltistan in Pakistan. The Indus here is the geological dividing line between the ancient Karakorum mountains and the younger Himalayas (40+ million years old and growing: Mount Everest rises 2 inches every ten years).

We’re in Indian Tibet here, a region called Ladakh where Tibetan culture flourishes freely. Wheeler Expeditions first explored Indian Tibet – including running the remote Zanskar River tributary of the Upper Indus, one the world’s most thrilling whitewater experiences – in 1992. We’ll explore it once more next summer. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #128 Photo ©Jack Wheeler)

THE HANGING MONASTERY

hanging-monasteryThe architectural wonder of the Hanging Monastery was built on a vertical cliff face by the Tuoba people of Inner Mongolia over 1,500 years ago (in the 490s). Devout Buddhists and brilliant engineers, they defied gravity by inserting huge wooden crossbeams deep into the cliff to suspend the monastery’s temples, shrines, and monks’ living quarters, connected with bridges, corridors, and boardwalks, out into space.

Liao Mongols in the 900s rebuilt and sustained it, and it has been carefully refurbished and restored in the centuries since. While it remains primarily Buddhist with statues and depictions of Sakyamuni (the historical Buddha of 5th century BC) and Maitreya (the future Buddha), the monks welcome reverence to Taoism and its founder Lao Tzu (4th century BC), as well as Confucius (551-479 BC). Thus you also see shrines and statues of them like nowhere else.

It is a unique and inspiring experience to be here. We’ll be here again in our next exploration of Inner Mongolia next year. ((Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #116 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

WOMAN WHO MADE CAREER SINGING ABOUT HER BAD CHOICES ENDORSES KAMALA

U.S. — A singer who has made her entire career out of writing songs detailing her horrifically bad choices has announced her choice for President: Kamala Harris.

Pop icon Taylor Swift, who has written a veritable library of songs about her being a poor judge of character, made the announcement last night. "I know I'm internationally renowned for regretting every major decision in my life, but this choice will turn out different, I just know it," said Swift. "She's the one!"

A longtime Democrat, Swift's songwriting is known for chronicling how each man she thought would be the one turned out to be a total scumbag, but she was too blind to see it. More recently, her writing has evolved to explaining how she's mentally unstable and makes terrible, destructive decisions about other things in her life outside of romantic relationships.

"Who better than Taylor Swift to decide if a person will work out or not?" said Swift fanatic David Muir. "If you stacked all of her ex-boyfriends on top of each other, you could reach Neptune, okay? That's what we call 'experience'. She's got so much experience making wrong decisions, who better to decide what's right?"

At publishing time, Swift had reportedly begun penning a breakup song after learning that Kamala is really more of a Britney fan.

HALF-FULL REPORT 09/06/24

As you may recall, last Monday’s Archive featured street artist Sabo’s portrayal of Hillary as a freakazoid loser.  Above is his of Trump as a heroic winner, a modern-day MacArthur returning to triumph over defeat.

As that Archive from September 2, 2016 noted, Labor Day weekend marks the end of summer froth – in 2024 that would be “joy” and “vibes” over “kamala” which actually means “horrible” in Finnish…

google-kamala

So it is this week after Labor Day that the real race for the presidency began – delightfully so for those who love America, rotten for those who don’t.  We’ll start with a selection of good news reports (can’t resist the first being the funniest), then discuss how Trump is guaranteeing a roaring revival of America’s economy. Here we go!

SKYE’S LINKS 09/05/24

legal-self-defenseWe’ll start with a real surprise today, the Massachusetts Supreme Court put out a perfectly logical and reasonable ruling about – of all things – a weapon!

Another big manufacturer is ditching DEI, which is good news; but Trump disappoints with a proposal for more government interference – expensive interference – in reproductive matters. Not good.

Tampon Walz has had a love affair with China for three decades, and the Pentagon is stonewalling Congress about the details (shocker, I know).  The left is the left all over the world, and they all hate free speech for non-elites. Elon Musk is fighting a leftist judge to keep X free in Brazil – and the judge isn’t staying in his duly appointed lane (I did say he was a leftist, didn’t I?)

The left isn’t only arrogant, it’s stupid. One of the Big Tech companies bragged about spying on customers online and it got out, of course. The BIG names are distancing themselves quickly, but methinks too little, too late. At least, mehopes.

I think we all know that the economy is fubar, so no surprises there, but it is surprising that the US has experienced its first coup – and no one seems to care. Let’s get into it.

HILLARY IS GOING TO LOSE

Female Potus[This Monday's Archive was originally published eight years ago to the day, September 2, 2016.  It uncannily matches the same reasons why Kamala is going to lose (and why she may win). Please let your fellow TTPers on the Forum know the extent to which you agree or disagree and why. In the meantime, I can’t wait to see how famed street artist Sabo will portray Kamala 2024.]

TTP, September 2, 2016

What does she stand for? What are the genuine accomplishments in her life? What new innovative ideas does she have to change the current direction of the country that two-thirds of voters think is wrong?

Then there are questions of ethics and morality. Ereyesterday (8/28), Roger Simon laid out the stakes:

“The truth about the Clinton Foundation is already clear: a medium to leverage Hillary Clinton's position as Secretary of State for personal enrichment and global control by the Clintons and their allies. To my knowledge, nothing like this has ever been done in the history of the United States government.

This means quite simply, that the United States of America has abandoned the rule of law. The election of Hillary Clinton—our own Evita—will make the situation yet more grave. Consider something so basic as how you raise your children in a country where the president is most probably an indictable criminal and most certainly a serial liar of almost inexhaustible proportions. What does this say about our basic morality and how does that affect all aspects of our culture?”

It’s been a long hot political summer, with the Lying Swine Media in a 24/7 feeding frenzy to demonize Trump and coronate Hillary as having already won before the campaign really begins. As always, summer froth abates over Labor Day weekend, with campaigns beginning in earnest the day after – one week from today, Tuesday September 6th.

So with the LSM predicting the race for the White House is over before it begins, I figure I might as well join in. My prediction is: Hillary is going to lose. She is going to lose, as Dick Cheney would say, “big time.”

Of course I’m going to caveat that big time – I’ve been wrong too many times before not to do that. But let’s set the caveats aside for now. Let’s first count the abundance of ways she’s going down for the electoral count.

HOW THE FORCE WAS WITH US – UNTIL IT WASN’T

deucew_starwarsLife imitates art, and the reverse.

Too much of our art comes from Hollywood; a veritable Omaha Beach of leftism in our country – but one that everyone, at some point, can’t help but hear.

They steer our cultural direction, for better or worse.

If we invent a faster-than-light spacecraft drive, it will be, in part, because of the prodding from Star Wars and Star Trek.

People may shake their heads at a spaceship making the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs (we know Han Solo wouldn’t exaggerate) but then they saw their kids being made to believe there were multiple genders.

Real Mafia gangsters watched The Godfather films to learn, in theory, how they were supposed to act.

Yeah, this stuff sticks.

Let’s talk today, though, about Star Wars – and how it relates to our country and culture.

CAN THEY REALLY REINVENT KAMALA HARRIS IN 70 DAYS?

In theory, it should be hard for Kamala Harris to win the presidency of the United States.

Under pressure, Harris just completed her first “live interview”—a disastrous performance that was mysteriously taped, edited, and emotionally supported by her co-interviewed running mate.

During the interview, she claimed that her values remain the same even though her manifestations of them have admittedly changed.

Translated, that means for the next 70 days, she will advocate for popular policies antithetical to her own values, which will inevitably resurface after the election once the current façade fades away.

She is a Berkelyite who, as attorney general of California, had a proud far-left tenure. The lifelong large corpus of Harris’s left-wing enthusiasm and causes are only now being unearthed.

Unlike other leftists, she really was a proud, woke radical and wanted everyone else to be one as well—broadcasting her leftism as openly as she is now cloaking it.

In one respected survey, Harris’s voting record was rated as the most left-leaning in the United States Senate.

If she voted to the left of the admitted hardcore socialist Bernie Sanders, what exactly does that make her?

WHY DID ZUCKERBERG CHOOSE NOW TO CONFESS?

Consider Mark Zuckerberg’s revelation and its implications for our understanding of the last four years, and what it means for the future.

On many subjects important to public life today, vast numbers of people know the truth, and yet the official channels of information sharing are reluctant to admit it.

The Fed admits no fault in inflation and neither do most members of Congress.

The food companies don’t admit the harm of the mainstream American diet.

The pharmaceutical companies are loath to admit any injury.

Media companies deny any bias. So on it goes.

And yet everyone else does know, already and more and more so.

This is why the admission of Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg was so startling. It’s not what he admitted. We already knew what he revealed. What’s new is that he admitted it.

We are simply used to living in a world swimming in lies.

It rattles us when a major figure tells us what is true or even partially or slightly true. We almost cannot believe it, and we wonder what the motivation might be.

IF YOU WANT TO SEE WHERE AMERICA IS HEADING, LOOK TO 1453

They say history repeats itself. Properly forewarned, it doesn’t have to.

As Americans prepare to write a pivotal history for the ages this November—one way or another—it might be helpful to take a quick look at an earlier moment in time when a much divided, fractured world faced a pivotal challenge with one man at the barricade and the rest of the world too complacent to help.

Constantinople, the city that Constantine the Great founded in 330 AD and that the Theodosian walls later protected, stood as the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire for 1,000 years.

Although the rising Ottoman empire, by 1500, would stretch from the modern states of Algeria to Yemen to Hungary, in 1453, Constantinople was still Christian and a major thorn in the side of Muslim Sultan Mehmed II. He planned to fix that.

By late May, after besieging the city for two months and making no headway, Mehmed prepared to retreat. A small number of his advisors suggested giving the siege one last day before they withdrew. Mehmed agreed, and on May 29, the Ottomans threw everything they had at the city. Constantinople’s defenders repulsed the first three Ottoman assaults, and the Ottoman generals despaired at the prospect of defeat.

But then one of the great turning points in history happened.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY – THE MAGIC OF TASSILI

jackson-at-tassiliFebruary, 2003. In the deepest hidden heart of the Sahara Desert where Algeria, Libya, and Niger come together, there is a high uninhabited plateau called the Tassili n’Ajjer. It is one of the most magical places on the planet – gigantic rock pillars and arches in spectacular abstract shapes, a forest of 2,000 year-old trees from when the Sahara was once green, the greatest profusion of prehistoric rock art on earth many thousand years old.

This is my son Jackson when we trekked and camped here at age 10. He’ll be guiding our next expedition here with me soon, for it is now safe and secure again. Come with us to have one of the most magically unforgettable experiences of your life. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #122 Photo ©Jack Wheeler)
