AN INCIDENT OF WHICH YOU SHOULD BE AWARE

Mr. Kevin W. Toomy
President and Chief Operating Officer
Ruth's Chris Steak House

Re:  An incident of which you should be aware.

Dear Mr. Toomy,

As you are reading this, so are tens of thousands of people on the Internet.

This past Monday evening, May 10th, with my wife at a dinner business meeting I decided to treat myself to a steak at Ruth's Chris - which I consider the best steak in America this side of Peter Luger's in Brooklyn.

I arrived at the Ruth's Chris in Tyson's Corner, Virginia (8521 Leesburg Pike), a little after nine.  My server was a very nice and competent lady named Shannon.  As it was late, the place was fairly empty:  two fellows in a booth across from me, a quartet at a table to my left, another group to my right, and a third group that I could hear but not see.

Shannon took my order and soon afterwards, both the group on my right and left departed.  Only the group that I couldn't see (plus the two fellows in the booth) were left and now that the other folks had gone, I noticed how loud they were.  Really loud.  As I listened, the language they were speaking was unmistakable.  It was Arabic.

WARS ON THE WAY

While attention is fixated on Iraq and Afghanistan, the possibility of a number of other wars clearly emerged in the past few days, three in particular.

Starting January 30, a total of five undersea telecom cables have been mysteriously cut in the Persian Gulf and the Middle East area.  This is no accident, comrades.  Someone has been slicing them.  Someone with submarines to do the slicing.  Who could that be?  And what would be their target?

That's a prelude to war in the Middle East.  How about a war in Europe?  One being promoted by Condi Rice and our State Department in support of Moslem narco-terrorists taking over a Christian country?

That would be a region of Serbia called Kosovo.

Close to home is a third war on the horizon, between Venezuela and Colombia.

Chapter Six: DOÑA MARINA

“My third set of masters,” Malinali thought to herself. These people, these “Spaniards” were different from any others she had known or even imagined. They seemed to her to almost be not of this earth. Perhaps they were from the stars, she thought.

“Are you afraid of them, Little Miss Dry Grass?” she asked herself, summoning her courage, her sense of humor, and the memory of her father all at once. Yes, a part of her was afraid, of course. Who wouldn’t be? Then she heard her father’s counsel: “What reason do you have to be afraid? Have these strangers shown themselves to be cruel and unmerciful, or kind and forgiving? They are impossibly fierce in battle, yet impossibly generous in victory. Use your intelligence, learn how to gain the respect of these Spaniards. Never forget, Malinali, you are a still a Queen! Never show any fear!”

Her thoughts were interrupted by the words of the stranger who spoke Mayan. He addressed them all assembled on the floor of this great floating home.

LIONS OF LIBERTY

People are more free and prosperous as a result of the work of Gary Becker, John Blundell, Leonard Liggio, Gordon Tullock and Henry Manne, all of whom passed away during the last eight months.

Henry Manne, dean emeritus of the George Mason University Law School, and one of the founders of the field of law and economics, died this past Saturday (1/17), at age 86.

Most lawyers know little about economics, and as a result, many judges make unnecessarily harmful decisions. Dr. Manne, who was both a lawyer and an economist, had been influenced by the work of Ronald Coase and Aaron Director (who had been professors of his at the University of Chicago Law School) and by economists Milton Friedman, Armen Alchian and others.

Henry Manne's impact will remain for generations, not only from his own writings, but from the influence he had on his students and others that he mentored (including yours truly), and the fact that courses in law and economics are now taught in many law schools.

In May 2014, one of the true economic giants, Gary Becker, at age 83 left us.

Becker had made important contributions to our understanding of the motivations for discrimination, crime and drug addiction. He was always a pleasure to be with because of his many original insights into human behavior.  Awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1992, his mentor Milton Friedman (Nobel Laureate in 1976), said that Gary Becker was the best student he ever had.

“J’ACCUSE!” TO THE UNITED NATIONS

[On November 24, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Ron Prosor gave this extraordinary heroic speech to the UN General Assembly. It was given in response to the UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. Protocol calls for such speeches be addressed to the President of the General Assembly, a ceremonial position currently held by Uganda Foreign Minister Sam Kutesa.]

Mr. President,

I stand before the world as a proud representative of the State of Israel and the Jewish people. I stand tall before you knowing that truth and morality are on my side. And yet, I stand here knowing that today in this Assembly, truth will be turned on its head and morality cast aside.

The fact of the matter is that when members of the international community speak about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a fog descends to cloud all logic and moral clarity. The result isn't realpolitik, it's surrealpolitik.

The world's unrelenting focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is an injustice to tens of millions of victims of tyranny and terrorism in the Middle East. As we speak, Yazidis, Bahai, Kurds, Christians and Muslims are being executed and expelled by radical extremists at a rate of 1,000 people per month.

How many resolutions did you pass last week to address this crisis? And how many special sessions did you call for? The answer is zero. What does this say about international concern for human life? Not much, but it speaks volumes about the hypocrisy of the international community.

THE DAWN OF AMERICA 3.0

It's time for...

{youtube}79CWb23NZrc{/youtube}

Yes, that's Paul McCartney playing guitar for Jagger and Bowie.  The performance was in 1986, but we can dance and sing our version today.

Calling out around the world, are you ready for a brand new beat?
America's here and the time is right for dancing in the street.

As Churchill quipped, "You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else."

We saw America 3.0 dawning this morning with the astounding election returns of GOP victories across the country.  This is not a simple rejection of Zero.  It is far deeper than that.  It is the rejection of the Dem vision for America, the maintenance and expansion of the obsolete America 2.0 industrial big government state.

Yesterday, the GOP received a massive mandate to begin dismantling the 2.0 legacy state - which means primarily defunding and eliminating entire federal agencies such as Education and the EPA, and returning most federal programs to the states via the 10th Amendment.

They have to be smart about this of course, and act with a great deal of finesse.  Yet this is long range.  What about right now?

The most immediate concern is the lame duck session that starts next Wednesday (11/12).  There are two basic threats.  Here's how to counter them.

THERE IS NO PRESIDENTS DAY- IT’S WASHINGTON’S BIRTHDAY

This Saturday, February 22, is the 282nd anniversary of the birth of America's founder, the equal in nobility, heroism, and virtue of any human being who ever lived -- George Washington.

What it is not, nor is any day such as last Monday (2/17), is the phony holiday called "Presidents Day."  Let's be quite clear on this.  There is no such holiday.  It exists only in the minds of furniture dealers, car salesmen, and Hate-America leftists.

It wasn't until 1870 that there were any national holidays at all, recognized by the federal government and granting federal workers a day off, although four were recognized by most states:  the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years.  In 1870, Congress declared them national.

In 1879, Congress added Washington's birthday to the national list, which had been unofficially celebrated by most Americans for many decades.

Memorial Day (originally called Decoration Day after the custom of decorating Civil War soldiers' graves with flowers), was traditionally celebrated on May 30, but had no formal designation until 1968 with a law called the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.  It was the Democrat Congress and President who damaged the memory of George Washington with this act of anti-patriotism.  Here it is:

A HAPPY LIFE IS NOT PERFECT HAPPINESS

There is a great misunderstanding about what it means to live a happy life, and it can be summed up in the popular symbol of the smiley face.

joel-smiley.png

Now, I like to smile. I love feeling that kind of glowing, delighted state of emotional bliss. It's wonderful to be full of joy and love and laughter. But feeling those things doesn't in and of itself make for a happy life; and just because you don't happen to feel them in the moment doesn't mean you are unhappy.

This smiley face view of happiness is not the whole story, and we know it..  So let's talk about the whole story.

CHANNEL THE FLOW OF YOUR EMOTIONS

Emotions have a very liquid quality; they move, they flow, they take on the form of their container. Like water in a stream, when they are in active motion they have a clear purpose and direction; when they get stuck they can become stagnant and even putrid.

Ignoring negative feelings doesn't make them go away, it just makes us unaware of them; but dwelling on negative feelings after they have already served their purpose can keep us stuck in them, stagnant in emotions that should have long since run downstream.

Every emotion has a function. Anger is a response to trespass; when somebody crosses a line or a boundary, we get angry in response, and that anger provides us with the energy and motivation to get them to stop. Fear is a signal that there is danger, and it narrows our focus on that danger, and can give us the incentive and energy to escape that danger. Grief is a response to loss and it can allow us to feel and mourn the loss, and to appreciate what we had.

Our emotions are not always accurate, though...

GORILLAS & PYGMIES EXPEDITION

GORILLAS & PYGMIES EXPEDITION

  led by Jack Wheeler

Sunday, February 26 to Sunday, March 04, 2012

This is real African adventure, an expedition to the most uninhabited jungle in Africa where gorillas outnumber people by 100-1.  And most of the people are Ba'Aka Pygmies.

There is an extraordinary profusion of wildlife.  When you think of elephants in Africa, you think of the bush elephant like in the Serengeti - but there is another subspecies called the forest elephant that you can see hundreds of at a time, if you know just where to go.  There are chimps, hippos, crocs, at least eight different kinds of monkeys like putty-nosed monkeys and crowned guenons, baboons, leopards, forest buffalo, an incredible array of birdlife, rare antelopes like the sitatunga and the trophy hunter's dream, the bongo.

The region is called Dzanga-Ndoki, where Cameroon, Congo-Brazzaville, and the Central African Republic (CAR) come together.  This is an opportunity to experience some of the rarest wildlife on earth in the remotest part of Africa, easily, in comfort and safety. I hope you will join me.

DEM DISASTER IN DENVER

All the smart talk seems to be about a "brokered" Republican convention, with the GOP in a confused mess all through the summer until somebody is finally chosen in Minneapolis in early September.

Yet the odds for that are decreasing, and may drastically do so if Romney takes Florida away from McCain next Tuesday.  Huckabee will be history, Giuliani wounded perhaps mortally, all the big conservative guns like Limbaugh will put McCain in the crosshairs, and Mitt Is It for the GOP.

The big difference between the GOP and Dem primaries, particularly those of Super Tuesday (2/5) is that most of the former's are winner-take-all, while the latter's are proportional.

Thus Hillary could "win" all the primaries from now to June and still not get a majority of delegates.  In fact, with the vicious catfight going on between her and Obama Hussein, that's the likely outcome.  It's the Dems who face a brokered convention, and it is going to be a disaster.

Chapter Ten: VERA CRUZ

Malinali and Bernal returned to the camp to find all the Spaniards assembled in front of Cortez’s tent, talking loudly and arguing amongst themselves. In response to Malinali’s questioning glance, Bernal smiled. “Ah, the Captain’s trap is being sprung.”

Taking her aside, he explained. “Remember that I told you my cousin, Don Diego Velasquez, was governor of Cuba? The truth is that he is a greedy fat man who has many friends and many enemies - and our soldiers here are made up of both. Those who are friends of Velasquez want to return to their haciendas in Cuba. They think that Velasquez will share most of the gold Montezuma has given us with them. The enemies of Velasquez want to stay and found a colony with lands and haciendas of their own. They will get nothing from Velasquez if they return to Cuba.”

“And which side is Captain Cortez on?” Malinali wanted to know.

Bernal laughed long and hard. “Ah, Doña Marina, the stories of Cortez and Don Diego are already legendary in Cuba! I must tell them to you someday, then you will laugh as well. No, Cortez made such a fool of Don Diego that he has no thought of returning to Cuba. That is why a few days ago he asked for my help, which I was happy to give.

THE GREAT GLOBAL TAX HAVEN LIE

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. Cayman is prosperous, in part, because of a great global lie, which causes many big rich nations to pursue bad economic policies. The global lie is that the developed countries have too little government, rather than too much.

The simple and obvious empirical fact that most developing and developed countries with smaller government sectors have grown faster in recent decades than those countries with big government sectors is ignored both by the politicians and many in the media.

The political classes in these big government countries, rather than taking responsibility for their own misguided policies, look for scapegoats. Their favorite scapegoats are high-growth countries with low tax rates on savings and investment. They blame offshore financial centers like Cayman, Hong Kong, Bermuda, and even mid-sized countries like Switzerland for engaging in "unfair tax competition."

The truth behind the great global "tax haven" lie is that offshore financial centers owe their prosperity to tax transparency, not tax evasion.

OBAMA IS NOT A MONARCH

The Constitution designs a system of checks and balances for our nation, and executive amnesty for immigrants here illegally unilaterally decreed from the White House would seriously undermine the rule of law.

Our founders repeatedly warned about the dangers of unlimited power within the executive branch; Congress should heed those words as the president threatens to grant amnesty to millions of people who have come to our country illegally.

To be clear, the dispute over executive amnesty is not between President Obama and Republicans in Congress; it is a dispute between President Obama and the American people. The Democrats suffered historic losses in the midterm elections largely over the prospect of the president's executive amnesty.

President Obama was correct: His policies were on the ballot across the nation in 2014. The elections were a referendum on amnesty, and the voters soundly rejected it. There was no ambiguity.

Undeterred, President Obama appears to be going forward. It is lawless. It is unconstitutional. He is defiant and angry at the American people. If he acts by executive diktat, President Obama will not be acting as a president, he will be acting as a monarch.

Congress, representing the voice of the people, should use every tool available to prevent the president from subverting the rule of law.  Here are two of them.
