HALF-FULL REPORT 01/03/14

OK - welcome to 2014! What's in store for the world this year? Beats me. How should I know? The future hasn't happened yet.

We can be supremely confident that the sun will without exception continue to rise in the east (although I did see the sun set in the east and rise in the west one day - it's a story), that there will be a full moon this coming January 16, and that ostriches will not spontaneously turn into elephants on the Serengeti Plains.

The laws of physics and nature will continue to hold. Beyond that, regarding human activity predictions have to be heavily larded with caveats, because there's no way of telling when black swans will appear out of the ether to bite us in the glutes, or what random grain of sand will collapse a country's sand pile.

So let's talk of possibilities and opportunities. For the fact is that there's no such thing as the future. Instead, there is a very large number of possible futures - with some being much more likely than others. What might they be?

Let's hop around the world a bit first before focusing on the US.

MODEL MELTDOWN: GOVERNMENT FUNDS THE FORECAST IT IS LOOKING FOR

This week, the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is slated to release its fourth report since 1990. Leaked copies indicate an admission that there has been no global warming for the past 16 years, but the report will also increase its probability from 90 percent to 95 percent that global warming ? if it does occur ? is caused by man.

Not one of the major climate models on which the panel bases its predictions forecast the lack of warming over the past 16 years, even though the models do vary widely as to how much warming they predicted.

Not to be outdone, President Obama again is warning us that if the Republicans do not vote for more government spending in the budget battles that are now upon us, we will go back into a recession. You may have not noticed we had left the recession, since employment levels are still below where they were five years ago. The president, of course, does not make such statements off the top of his head, but on the basis of his economic-forecast models. You might ask: "How accurate have these models been in forecasting?"

THE ONE NUMBER THAT CAN KEEP AMERICA INTACT

There is a famous scene (at least famous for every Trekkie) in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (the 1989 movie, not a TV series episode) that Ben Franklin would have loved. Every American today needs to watch it. Spock, Bones, and Captain Kirk have beamed down to a planet at the center of the universe, led by a Vulcan named Sybok who convinces them that here they will meet God Himself.

They are overwhelmed with God's presence, Who, upon being told the Starship Enterprise was able to get through the Impenetrable Barrier to reach the planet, asks that it be brought to Him.

Everyone eagerly agrees - except for Kirk (William Shatner), who impertinently interrupts God to ask, "Excuse me... but what does God need with a Starship?" Bones explodes at him: "Jim, what are you doing!?" Kirk looks at Bones quizzically and answers simply, "I'm asking a question."

Kirk's question and God's attacking him instead of answering it exposes "God" as an evil alien pretending to be God - the alien is not God at all.

Today, America is ruled by an evil Alien with a God-complex. He is worshipped as such by a Witch Doctor Media, and millions of Americans lacking the courage to question their ruler's authority for fear that this may halt the various bribes he dispenses to them.

Millions of other Americans, however, do possess this courage and despise both The Alien for pretending he is a god, and those who worship him. Thus we have Two Americas - and they are going to go their separate ways unless we find some rational way to keep them together. There's one number that can do it.

THANKFUL FOR AMERICA WITHOUT GUILT OR FEAR

All my life, I have always thought it was the coolest thing on planet Earth to be an American. I have been to something close to 200 countries and political jurisdictions in the world, and whenever someone asks me, "Where are you from?" it is a special thrill to be able to answer, "America - I'm an American."

Thanksgiving is the unique American holiday. We share Christmas and Easter with every other Christian nation. Most every country celebrates its Independence Day, and the birthdays of their founding heroes. Thanksgiving is ours, where we give our deepest thanks to Providence for the extraordinary gift of America to mankind.

Other countries have their special times to celebrate their uniqueness, when their citizens take justifiable pride in their country's achievements, and all to the good. Thanksgiving is America's Day, the time when all Americans - all - get to celebrate the achievements of the most successful society in human history.

Tragically, however, there are two groups of Americans for whom Thanksgiving will be bleak. Liberals and pessimists.

The purpose of Thanksgiving is to be thankful for being American. Thankful with no buts. This is the day to celebrate the goodness of our country - the moral goodness, the moral decency of American institutions, American history, and the character of the American people.

No whining and moaning about what happened to the Indians, or about slavery and poverty and racism. No buts. Think that liberals can do this? Let's see.

RENDEZVOUS AT MANDALAY

The response we've gotten regarding our To The Point Rendezvous announced last month has really been gratifying. Here are the latest details.

You know when and where: Las Vegas, Nevada - starting Friday evening, January 26^th and ending Monday morning, January 29^th. There is no conference fee and folks are free to stay where they want. Costs (meals, activities, etc.) are Dutch Treat.

Yet we've been swamped by emails asking where am I staying and where will we congregate. The answer is Mandalay Bay.

IRAN UNRAVELING?

Things have not been going well for Ahmadinejad the Persian Midget and his sour band of terrorist mullahs this week. This is thanks to Porter Goss giving Michael Hayden a lesson in how to run psy-ops at the CIA before his departure tomorrow (Friday, 5/26).

Take the riots in Tabriz and other Azeri-populated cities in northwest Iran. On May 23, a government newspaper in Tehran published a cartoon depicting an Azeri-speaking cockroach. Oops.

That very day, Azeri demonstrators marched on government offices in Tabriz, riots broke out in a number of Azeri towns, the Tabriz main bazaar was shut down with shopkeepers joining the demonstrators, who had to be dispersed with teargas.

The irony of the mullahs having cartoon riots directed at them is just too delicious. I wonder how such a cartoon slipped into a government newspaper? "No comment" from Porter.

ITALIAN COURAGE

In response to Iran's call for the elimination of Israel, tonight (Nov.2) in Rome, thousands, probably tens of thousands, will demonstrate in support of the Jewish state.

The demonstration has been organized by Giuliano Ferrara, the larger-than-life editor of the feisty daily newspaper il Foglio, and the demonstrators will range from members of some Italian Islamic organizations to foreign minister Giancarlo Fini (long a bete noire of America's "leading" newspapers and networks), just back from a trip to the Middle East.

It takes courage to stand up publicly for Israel against the world's leading sponsor of terrorism, especially in contemporary Europe, where anti-Semitism is on the rise, where the Jewish population is minuscule (there are slightly more than 40,000 in all of Italy, less than one percent of Italians), and where the Islamic population is expanding rapidly.

I have not noticed any such demonstrations here, for example. But the Italians, as is their wont, have once again broken the stereotype most foreigners hold of them, and have directly challenged the mullahs.

I think I’ve found the best spam killer. Well, actually there are two. You can buy the very same software that Hotmail and Yahoo use to automatically weed out spam, putting it all in a Bulk folder. One click on “empty” and they’re history. The software program is called Brightmail Anti-Spam 5.1. Microsoft will be happy to license it to you for only $1,499.00

THE WORLD’S MONEY PRINTING CHAMPION IS JAPAN, NOT THE US

There are no one-way bets in global finance, but Japan's stock market comes close. The authorities are about to funnel astronomical sums into Japanese stocks openly and deliberately under the next phase of Abenomics, both by regulatory fiat and by purchasing the Nikkei index directly with printed money.

Prime minister Shinzo Abe is unshackling the world's biggest stash of savings, the $1.3 trillion Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF). Officials say the ceiling on equity holdings will rise from 12% to around 20% as soon as August, opening the way for a $100 billion buying blitz.

Mr. Abe's move comes sooner than expected and amounts to a market shock, though nobody should be shocked anymore as he keeps doubling down on the world's most radical economic experiment.

The Nikkei index stalled in December after rising almost 100% since September 2012, even though the Bank of Japan (BoJ) is still showering the economy with money, buying $75 billion of bonds each month. The BoJ's balance sheet will reach 70% of GDP by March 2015, three times the US Federal Reserve's.

Well, here we are - the last HFR of 2013. We start looking forward to what's in store for 2014 next week. For now, let's reflect on what's been going on in the world.

The best political cartoonist in the country is the IBD's Mike Ramirez. On Christmas Eve (12/24), he epitomized the year-long train wreck of the Republican Establishment:

And sure enough, right on cue, yesterday (12/26) Reince Preibus issued a RNC statement wishing everyone a "Happy Kwanzaa!" - proving Ramirez right about the GOP being the Stupid Spineless Party.

AMERICA AND THE WEST LEAD THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM

The good news is that there are more countries managing their economies in a fiscally responsible way than there were two years ago.

Fiscally responsible means keeping average annual deficits less than average annual economic-growth rates, keeping net debt from exceeding one-third of gross domestic product, and maintaining a relatively small government.

The bad news is that most of the world's biggest economies, including that of the United States, are getting deeper and deeper in debt as a result of excessive spending, and will ultimately have to pay the price.

The chart below gives the details. They are not pretty for us nor for most of the West.

SURVIVING A RIOT

As much as no sane person would want urban and suburban rioting, there are thugs making noise in social media that they would use the acquittal of Florida neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman as an excuse to riot and loot on a grand scale, not just in Sanford, FL where events took place, or in Florida, but nationwide. These criminals—there’s no other way to describe them—are asserting that they will use an acquittal as a excuse nationwide to go on a rampage in many areas.

The last time we saw rioting on a very large scale, it was very, very bad.

The very first thing you need to do is figure out a neighborhood protection plan (NPP). If you haven’t figure done out with your neighbors, I’d suggest you get a copy of (shameless commercial plug coming) A Failure of Civility and start working with them on that, posthaste.

I’d suggest that caliber is less important than magazine capacity and accuracy in such a situation, and that firearms with excellent penetration qualities and long range aren’t optimal. It’s tough to argue a case for lethal force at 400 yards even against a mob, and if your bullet is recovered from the body of a neighbor hiding in a closet, the court will still hold you responsible.

THE MICTURATING MONKEY

For close to a half-century now, ever since his first book in 1965, The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine Flake Streamline Baby, the best writer in America has been Tom Wolfe.

He told the story of the Hippie Sixties in The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (1968) and contrasted it with the Heroes of the Sixties, the original Seven Astronauts, in The Right Stuff (1979). No one can skewer lefties with a literary rapier better than Wolfe - as he proved in his portrayal of "limousine liberals" (he coined the term) in Radical Chic (1970). His exposure of the lefty fraud of Modern Art and its nostalgie de la boue (nostalgia for the mud) in The Painted Word (1975), is breathtakingly hilarious.

He has written four novels, the first in 1987, The Bonfire of the Vanities, which was made into a movie starring Tom Hanks, Melanie Griffith, and Bruce Willis. The last is brand new, coming out less than a month ago, Back to Blood.

The "blood" isn't about gore but ethnicity, specifically the ethnic divisions between Cubans, Whites, Blacks and others in today's Miami. But it's neither the plot nor the characters that we're focusing on here, but Wolfe's tale of The Micturating Monkey - for it is of enormous relevance to conservatives. It reveals the strategy by which the Left can be defeated.

MOQTADA AL-WAXMAN VS. THE HOLLYWOOD HEARTTHROB

If the folks in Hollywood didn't allow their rabid hate-America passions to overcome the functioning of their business brains when they watched the Blackwater hearings in Congress yesterday (10/02)*, they must have been transfixed by Blackwater CEO Erik Prince and seen nothing but dollar signs.

It was a scene straight out of a movie. The witness was straight out of central casting - Hollywood handsome, all-American clean-cut wholesome, a rawhide-tough former Navy SEAL who can easily think faster and smarter than anyone in the room.

Up against him was a collection of Democrat contributors to Congress' record low 11% approval rating, determined to demonstrate how they earned such public disgust, and led by that quintessence of corruption, Henry Waxman (D-CA), whose eyes bulging out of his sockets and huge buck teeth bulging out of his mouth below his hairy lips make him look like a creepy rat.

Hollywood casting again.

If you watch Erik's face closely (the hearing was broadcast on C-SPAN3*), you can see how hard he is trying not to grimace in revulsion or laugh out loud at the charade. You just know what he really wanted to say:

"Congressman Waxman, I would like to ask you a question: Why are you in league with the chief Shiite terrorist in Iraq, Moqtada al-Sadr? He controls the Ministry of the Interior (MOI), and it was MOI police who attacked us on September 16. All of the "witnesses" claiming we opened fire and killed 11 Iraqi civilians are Iraqi police with the MOI. Are you just using their lies to smear us or are you in active cooperation with al-Sadr to hurt the war effort in Iraq? If so, perhaps you would be more appropriately addressed as Congressman Moqtada al-Waxman."
