HALF-FULL REPORT 03/28/25

 Paradigm Shifts

Alfred Brown posed a thought-provoking question on the TTP forum following last week's HFR, which merits further discussion. The question revolves around the idea that "the work of almost every member of the laptop computer class is quickly becoming redundant." This notion is supported by the rapid advancement of AI, which seems to be progressing at a rate similar to Moore's Law during the early days of the PC computer revolution.

However, it is essential to recognize that AI relies on the probability of specific words or pieces of computer code following one another based on their occurrence in billions of lines of text or code. Consequently, AI inherently drives everything towards the status quo due to its design, which is rooted in the concept of logical induction. This introduces a problem worth examining.

The increasing replacement of licensed professionals by artificial intelligence signifies a shift in the job market and the skills necessary for success. Additionally, the decline of state propaganda organs suggests a weakening of government-controlled media and the emergence of alternative information sources. Furthermore, major powers face significant challenges as they navigate the complexities of the current geopolitical landscape. Amidst these changes, a small, determined state that invested heavily in decentralization and innovation continues to persevere and succeed.

These are indeed revolutionary times. Join us for this week's Half Full Report as we delve deeper into these topics and explore their implications.

THE TYRANNY OF CHINA’S HISTORY

[This Monday’s archive was originally published on December 1, 2004 – While the news is fixated on Europe and the Middle East these days, China is always the threat looming in the background. The old saying comes to mind:  The more things change, the more they stay the same. This is peculiarly true for China.]

Chinese, written and spoken, is my candidate for the weirdest major language on earth. At the Monterey Institute, where US diplomats are taught foreign languages, it takes on average 600 hours of instruction to be fluent in a European language such as French or German, 1200 for Arabic - and 2400 in Chinese. (This means, of course, that for China and the world to communicate, Chinese must speak English, as the world will never speak Chinese).

Beyond the technical difficulties lie far deeper problems, resulting in a grossly myopic view of China’s history and future. The one buried most deeply is the way Chinese grammar reverses time: the past, in Chinese, is in front of or before you, while the future is behind you. Chinese culture is oriented towards the past, reading Chinese history through a distorted lens, and stubbornly attempting to apply illusory lessons to the present.

This is precisely what China’s military and government leaders are doing with their strategy towards America.

ISLAM IN THE UNITED STATES: AN EPIC FUTURE?

deuces-wild_islmThe religious future of the United States is no doubt important to consider, as when a majority of any religion are present in a country, the religious outlook certainly influences how the country is led and how the laws are made and interpreted.

When a given religion is organized and currently planning large specific communities for their faith and practice, we should take even more notice of them.

We have seen a surge of this activity with Islam in a place that one rarely associates with it.

The state of Texas.

Let’s take a closer look at this; and the implications if it continues.

epic-cityThere are, right now, developers and Islamic religious figures attempting to build specific communities for Moslems in Texas. One of the better-known ones is a place known as Epic City.

It is designed from the ground up as an Islamic small town, complete with specialized types of housing, a commercial area, and a large mosque in the center of it.

This development is not just a plan, though.  It is happening right now near the town of Josephine, Texas outside of Dallas/Fort Worth.

IS THE SIGNAL ‘SCANDAL’ AN ATTEMPT TO HIDE TRUMP’S SUCCESS?

We’re three days into what the Democrats and their willing accomplices in the mainstream press are trying to turn into a “scandal” — the accidental inclusion of Atlantic Editor Jeffrey Goldberg in a chat about the Trump administration’s operations against the Houthis on the texting app Signal.

The more we learn, the more we know that the whole affair is a massive nothingburger with everything on it and a big ol’ side of fake news fries.

Key members of the administration’s intelligence apparatus testified that the Signal messaging thread didn’t divulge any classified information.

And for all the commendation of Goldberg for not spilling too many beans, we have a better idea that there weren’t many beans to spill.

It's hard not to speculate on why the left is so desperate to blow this thing out of proportion and make it more than it should be.

Obviously, the left wants nothing more than to slap the scarlet letter S for “scandal” on this administration because it has been so effective and popular with the American people.

But a White House press release from Tuesday reveals the most plausible reason why the left wants to discredit the administration when it comes to action against the Houthis.

“Democrats and their media allies have seemingly forgotten that President Donald J. Trump and his National Security team successfully killed terrorists who have targeted U.S. troops and disrupted one of the most consequential shipping routes in the world. This is a coordinated effort to distract from the successful actions taken by President Trump and his administration to make America’s enemies pay and keep Americans safe. The Biden Administration sat back as a band of pirates — with precision-guided, Iran-provided weaponry — exacted a toll in one of the most important shipping lanes in the world.

TRUMP’S TEAM IS BEHAVING LIKE RECKLESS REDNECKS

The Brits are having a field day ridiculing and condemning what’s becoming known as Signalgate.  It’s not just the ridiculous security lapse but the childishly ignorant banter primarily between Vance and Hegseth:

TRUMP VOWS TO CATCH UP TO CHINA’S GROWING NAVAL FLEET

The United States' military isn't often outnumbered by a foreign nation's military power, nut it is when it comes to a naval fleet.

Under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, China has spent 12 years investing in an ambitious military shipbuilding program.

That communist country now has a navy with one-third more combat ships than the U.S.

It's much more than a status thing. A large navy can project a country's power virtually anywhere in the world.

We heard about that in recent days when President Donald Trump ordered the destruction of much of the Houthis' military capabilities in Yemen.

That would be by U.S. naval forces in the region.

Armed by Iran, the world's largest exporter of terrorism, the Houthis have crippled much of the world's maritime trade through the Middle East, forcing ships to travel all around Africa at much greater cost in money and time instead of using the Suez  Canal.

Last weekend, President Trump issued a lengthy statement that said, in part:

“Today, I have ordered the United States Military to launch decisive and powerful Military action against the Houthi terrorists in Yemen. They have waged an unrelenting campaign of piracy, violence, and terrorism against American, and other, ships, aircraft, and drones.

Joe Biden's response was pathetically weak, so the unrestrained Houthis just kept going. It has been over a year since a U.S. flagged commercial ship safely sailed through the Suez Canal, the Red Sea, or the Gulf of Aden.”

THE AGONY OF JOHN ROBERTS

Pity poor John Roberts. No, he’s not corrupt or compromised.

He is simply a man who has found himself at a pivotal time and place in a position of great responsibility for which he is utterly unsuited.

He’s not a dumb man. He is, in fact, a very smart man – Hugh Hewitt knew him personally in the Reagan administration and testifies to that. I have no doubt it’s true.

I know many smart people who have similar flaws. As objectively intelligent as John Roberts is, he is unwise, and he is endangering the institution he wants to preserve because he does not understand human nature or the times he finds himself in.

Frankly, I’ll take wisdom over raw intellect any day of the week.

If he had the capacity to lead that he so manifestly lacks, John Roberts could save his institution with decisive and bold action. But that’s not who he is.

Understand what John Roberts wants. He is an institutionalist who has always wanted to protect the judiciary branch.

He wants it to be a fully co-equal branch that is respected by all. But the very actions he has chosen to take – or not to take – in response to the current crisis of out-of-control subordinate courts are guaranteeing that it will fall.

UPDATING YOUR ANCIENT PAST

There are (at least) two major qualities from our ancient past that cause us considerable trouble.

Taking conscious control of them and training and updating ourselves for our present environment can make a big difference in our quality of life.

One of these is our attraction to high calorie foods. Starvation and famine were dire threats for our hunter gatherer forebears. Finding enough food was always the mission - and discovering a trove of high calorie foods was generally a cause for celebration and feasting.

When our ancestors came across the wilderness equivalent of a bakery, the best option for their survival was to eat as much as they possibly could.

So today, when high-calorie/low-nutrition snacks are everywhere and inexpensive, our inner hunter gatherer leads us to want to eat as much as we can.

That our rate of obesity and corresponding health hazards such as heart disease and diabetes are through the roof is one consequence of our incredible prosperity.

This is not some moral failing or lack of character; we’re doing what our successful forebears selected for us. What worked well for our ancestors is killing us today.

Our challenge is to adapt to our abundance by consciously and purposefully resetting our habits from hunter-gatherer auto-pilot eating, and toward deliberate habits that include knowledge of how our current meals will affect our future health and well-being.

The other leftover from our ancient past is our strong bias toward….

FLASHBACK FRIDAY – THE CRUSADER FORTRESS IN THE CAUCASUS

This is the fortress town of Shatili in an extremely remote Caucasus region in Georgia called Khevsureti. It was built by the Crusaders 1,000 years ago. The Khevsur people who live here trace their ancestry back to these Crusaders and until the 1930s still wore chain mail in feud-battles with other towns. I took this picture in 1991.

American traveler Richard Halliburton (1900–1939) saw and recorded the customs of the Khevsurs in 1935. The Khevsur men, dressed in chain mail and armed with broadswords, wore garments full of decoration made up of crosses and icons. They don’t do that anymore, but they proudly retain their Crusader Christian heritage – for Georgia adopted Christianity in the 4th century AD. THE REGISTAN OF SAMARKAND

sher-dor-madrassaThe magnificent Sher-Dor Madrassa, built in the early 1600s, is part of the Registan public square complex of the ancient Silk Road oasis of Samarkand. What’s fascinating is the mosaic depiction of living beings on either side of the arch – a tiger and on its back a rising sun deity with a human face. This is honoring the pre-Islamic history of Samarkand that goes back almost 3,000 years.

It was centuries old when Alexander conquered it in 329 BC. For a thousand years as Central Asia’s great entrepot on the Silk Road between China and the Mediterranean, it was a cosmopolitan center for Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, and Nestorian Christianity. Incorporated into the Islamic world in the 700s, sacked by Genghiz Khan in 1220, rebuilt by the time Marco Polo in 1272 described it as “a large and splendid city,” Tamerlane made it his capital in 1370.

Colonized by Czar Alexander II in the 1860s within the Russian Imperial Empire, and by the Soviets in the 1920s within the Uzbek SSR, Samarkand is flourishing today in independent Uzbekistan. There is so much to learn and contemplate upon when you are here. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #67 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

THE MAGIC OF MADEIRA

madeira-paradiseThe island of Madeira in the Atlantic some 320 miles west of Morocco was first discovered, uninhabited, by Portuguese explorers in 1418. It has been a part of Portugal ever since. In the 1600s it became renowned for its Madeira wine, with English wine makers settling there and exporting it to England and the American colonies. The English consul Charles Murray built a beautiful estate, “Quinta do Prazer”, Pleasure Estate, high above the capital of Funchal, which by the late 1800s was converted into the Monte Palace hotel.

100 years later, Portuguese entrepreneurs developed the property into one of the most spectacular tropical gardens in the world, with lakes, waterfalls, and exotic tropical plants turning it into a fantasy wonderland. You can spend hours wandering around relaxing and luxuriating in this peaceful paradise.  It’s just one of the magically beautiful places and truly relaxing, energizing experiences we have on Madeira and the Azores.  Join your fellow TTPers when we plan our next Atlantic Paradises exploration to enjoy them.  Life goes by so quickly, Carpe diem!  (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #243 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

LOOKING INTO A BABY LEOPARD’S EYES

baby-leopardThere are not many places in Africa where you can do this, where a leopard mother has no fear of your getting this close to her cub. The best place in all Africa is a region of Zambia called South Luangwa, where iconic African wildlife is in vast profusion yet uninhabited by people. And where you can stay in a safari lodge so luxurious it’s hard to believe you’re way out deep in the African bush.

I’ve been traveling to Africa for 50 years now – since 1971 – and have been to every country on the continent, so I know how unique a South Luangwa safari is. If you have a dream of experiencing an African safari once in your life, you might consider here. I can hardly wait to come here again. Care to join me, to look into a baby leopard’s eyes yourself? THE INSPIRATION OF AMERICA

tt-principles-of-independence-freedomNext to the entrance of The Red House, the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago in the capital of Port of Spain, there is this marble inscription. It is clear that it is inspired by our 1776 Declaration of Independence and America’s founding principles. Trinidad’s population is 99% either Indian (from India), African, or a mix of the two. 64% are Christian, 21% Hindu, 6% Moslem, others undeclared – and all have these principles as a common bond between them.

Here in the Caribbean’s Trinidad is such a clear example of how America’s founding moral principles are such an inspiration to all humanity, of all cultures, creeds, and ethnicities. They are universal, America’s heritage as a gift to the world. This is the heritage of all Americans – something we need to hold on to and hold dear as we persevere during this current period of our country’s cultural, moral, and political lunacy. HALF-FULL REPORT 03/21/25

Thank You, Elon

Many people suggested negotiating with Russia to end the war in Chechnya in the 1990s. The Chechens attempted this approach multiple times, making peace deals with Russia. However, each time, Russia used the 'peace' to prepare for its next, more devastating military offensive while still waging a hybrid war. In reality, Russia's war against the Chechens never ceased until their territory and people were consumed and weaponized for Russia's next war against other nations.

If Ukrainians stopped resisting, they would face the same fate as the Chechens. Moreover, the children of Ukrainians being attacked and stolen today could be used in future conflicts against other nations. The world tried to justify looking away in the 1990s by claiming that Chechnya was part of Russia. Now, the argument has shifted to "Ukraine was part of the Russian empire." Imperial logic can lead anywhere, and Russia will always find a pretext to advance. Sacrificing one more nation to Russian aggression will never make it stop.

This brings us to the ceasefire negotiations underway in Saudi Arabia between the United States and Russia. A 30-day ceasefire against energy infrastructure was reached this week and promptly violated as someone attacked a natural gas metering station near Kursk last night. Russia and Ukraine continue to slug it out as before, with neither side willing to show their cards.

Russia is estimated to have taken 900,000 military casualties, which includes killed and wounded, and these losses are not included in the population pyramid. If the war continues, the slight Russian teenager population bulge will be killed, and Russia will effectively lose its domestic workforce.

Putin does not need Ukrainian land, he needs warm bodies for their labor. Ukrainians understand this, and like their kidnapped children, they do not want to become Russian slaves.

President Trump continues to expose Russian economic limitations as the State Department under Marco Rubio continues to negotiate a ceasefire. Russia is demanding that land now occupied belongs to Russia, and there will be no concessions.

Come on over to this week’s HFR. The world is changing rapidly. Not everyone supports human freedom and flourishing. A new terrorist group stepped out of the shadows this month and they are burning down Tesla dealerships. The USA announces a sixth generation fighter aircraft and more…
