DUMB AND DUMBER ON CAPITOL HILL

Do you think the Republicans or the Democrats are winning the race to prove they are the dumbest and most incompetent political party?

The Republicans were clearly winning the race until January 2007. They threw away their majorities in both houses of Congress, by not only failing to have a realistic postwar strategy in Iraq but by such things as greatly expanding government spending when they had promised the voters the opposite.

The Democrats won the congressional elections by promising they would have a clear and coherent plan to end the stalemate in Iraq and to be "fiscally responsible" by holding down the growth in government spending and not increasing taxes.

So, what have they done since they have been in power? Having fulfilled virtually none of their campaign pledges, the Democrats' obvious incompetence and incoherence have managed to give the Congress an approval rate of only 29 percent, even lower than the president's.  That's quite an achievement.

BEATLES IN BAGHDAD

During dinner with a Kurdish businessman in Dubai last week, I suddenly began hearing a Beatles song in my head.  Written in 1967 by John Lennon and Paul McCartney for the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, the song is Getting Better:

I've got to admit it's getting better
a little better all the time
I have to admit it's getting better...
...getting so much better all the time

His goods and products are shipped into Dubai from India, China, and elsewhere, where they are transshipped to Basra, Iraq's port, then put into containers and trucked across Iraq south to north into Iraqi Kurdistan.  On average he is trucking three container loads across Iraq a day.

I asked him what difference Bush's "surge" has made in the past couple of months.

"A very dramatic improvement," was his answer.

As I am writing this (Thursday afternoon 4/19), I just saw on Drudge that Harry Reid, the Dems' Senate leader, has proclaimed the war in Iraq is "lost."  But it's the Democrats who are losing now, not America.

OUR SOLDIERS ARE ON THEIR OWN IN AFGHANISTAN

One of the many great things I took from my Army career was the rule that "the maximum effective range of an excuse is zero meters." But excuses are all we have in Afghanistan.

Among the worst of the countless follies that make an old soldier sick is the endless excuse-making for the sloth and cowardice of the Afghan National Army and the extortion culture of the Afghan Police -- while Taliban warriors fight to the bitter end.

The bottom line is that Taliban fighters are willing to die for their cause, while the Afghan soldiers we've tried to train don't even show up for formation. And the NATO-trained cops are so corrupt they've driven Afghans into the arms of the Taliban.

Meanwhile, nearsighted generals and clueless politicians make excuse after excuse... while leaving our soldiers on their own on the battlefield.

HALF-FULL REPORT 05/09/08

The HFR opens this week by celebrating Naqba - that glorious event the suicidal schmucks of the Arab world, the Palestinians, call "the Catastrophe."  Yes, the creation of Israel 60 years ago in May of 1948 was a catastrophe for people filled with envy and hate.  But for anyone who admires triumphs of the human spirit, the existence of Israel is not just something to celebrate on its 60th birthday, but every single day....

.... From one inspiring story to another.  The HFR raises a glass of Chianti to a great Italian, Roberto Calderoli.

The government of Libya had threatened (last Friday, 5/02) new Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi with "catastrophic consequences" should Calderoli be appointed to his Cabinet.  That was because in February of 2006, Calderoli, a leader of Italy's Northern League Party, appeared in an interview on national television wearing a t-shirt with cartoons of Mohammed - in sympathy with the Danish cartoonists who drew them....

... The HFR switches to Chablis to look down its nose at all the white wine liberals in such a tizzy over Hillary Clinton's channeling George Wallace by saying "hard working white Americans support me."  Then her key advisor Paul Begala had the chutzpah to point out an obvious truth:  that "Obama can't win with just the eggheads and African-Americans."

So here is the HFR's prediction....

... We close this week's HFR with two additional indications of why Obambi Hussein is going to lose.

TIME TO GET RID OF THE WORLD BANK?

With the current spectacle of the corrupt World Bank trying to rid itself of its president who is trying to de-corrupt the place, based on politicized corruption charges against him, it is time to ask:

Should the World Bank (WB), and indeed, its sister organization the International Monetary Fund (IMF), be abolished?

Both organizations had their annual spring meetings in Washington this past weekend. It is obvious to everyone that both are in deep trouble.

THE KURDISH CARD IN TURKEY

The current media freak-out in the US is about the silly mouth of radio buffoon Don Imus.  Multiply the frenzy by, say, 100 times, and it might give you an idea of the media hysteria right now in Turkey about the serious mouth of Massoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq.

Sick and tired of Turkish threats to his government, Barzani, in an interview on Dubai-based Al-Arabiya satellite television, unloaded on Turkey:  "If Ankara allows itself to interfere in our affairs, we will then interfere for the 30 million Kurds in Turkey."

The interview was broadcast while I was in Arbil (Hawler), capital of Iraqi Kurdistan last Saturday (4/7), and the Kurds there were in a state of ecstatic glee over Barzani's daring to identify Turkey's deepest fear.  It's hard for us here in America to grasp what sort of rhetorical nuclear bomb Barzani dropped with these words.

For, you see, one third of Turkey's land and population isn't Turkish -- it's Kurdish.

DISHONORING OUR DEAD, WHITEWASHING OUR ENEMIES

Eight years ago today, our homeland was attacked by fanatical Moslems inspired by Saudi Arabian bigotry. Three thousand American citizens and residents died.

We resolved that we, the People, would never forget. Then we forgot. We've learned nothing.

Instead of cracking down on Islamist extremism, we've excused it. Instead of relentlessly hunting Islamist madmen, we seek to appease them.

Instead of acknowledging that radical Islam is the problem, we elected a president who blames America, whose idea of freedom is the right for women to suffer in silence behind a veil -- and who counts among his mentors and friends those who damn our country or believe that our own government staged the tragedy of September 11, 2001.

HALF-FULL REPORT 05/02/08

What could be more delightful than the Dems tearing themselves apart?  That they go broke doing it.

The best news of the week -     Jeremiah "God Damn America" Wright trashing Obambi and Obambi trashing him back - shouldn't qualify for the HFR as the glass is just too intoxicatingly, overflowingly full.  And, besides, we discussed this in Obama in Greece.

But right in second place has got to be Democrat Coffers Run Dry.  The Dems have raised so many millions - and blown them all.  Only Democrats could do this.  What do they know about living within their means, anyway?  Even a DNC official admitted that it's "nuts that we're spending so much money fighting each other instead of Republicans."

To which we can only say, don't stop now.  We're enjoying seeing your IQ-challenged donors seeing their money go up in smoke, for nothing.    We're also enjoying listening to the grinding and gnashing of Democrat teeth over...

ELIMINATING THE EVIL OF APRIL 15

With evil day of April 15 nigh, it is time to demand of the various presidential candidates to show how they propose to lift the unconscionable burden of the IRS off our oppressed shoulders.

As is well known, the current U.S. income tax system and the Internal Revenue Service are a huge and unnecessary drag on both the economy and individual liberty. The IRS code and regulations have become hopelessly complex and grown to about 7 million words.

No one can possibly understand the present code, including even those at the IRS. Thus no matter how well-meaning, the taxpayer is always at risk for noncompliance -- such laws are characteristics of totalitarian, not free, societies.

Such laws need to be abolished.  There are two serious proposals for doing so:  the "Flat Tax" and the national sales tax, better known as the "Fair Tax." (See Flat Tax Revolution by Steve Forbes, and  The Fair Tax Book by Neil Boortz and Congressman John Linder.)

MORE THAN YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT PATERNITY

I can't pass this one up.  DNA testing that shows among Anna Nicole Smith's multiple lovers, a fellow named Larry Birkhead is the father of her daughter provides such an exquisitely teachable moment about paternity - well, it's simply impossible for me to resist.

This is going to be fun.  We'll start with a discussion of what scientists delightfully call "sperm wars."  Let's first discuss those conducted by chimpanzees.  They give the phrase "flooding the zone" a whole new meaning.

JUST HOW ANTI-DEMOCRACY PRO-DICTATORSHIP IS OBAMA?

President Barack Hussein Obama's State Department waited until the cusp of Labor Day weekend before publicly backing Latin America's dictators in their assault on democracy.

Our thug-worshipping diplomats figured they'd slip it by us. With the nation focused on barbecues and the beach, they announced that, if Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez's client, Manuel Zelaya, isn't returned to power in Honduras, the United States won't recognize the results of that country's upcoming free elections.

Mr. Obama hasn't uttered a single word of criticism for the dictatorships of Chavez or his protégés in Ecuador and Bolivia, nor once demanded free elections in Cuba.  But he's going to show those wicked Hondurans, by Hugo! They can't boot out a crazy leftwing president just because he's trying to subvert their Constitution.

HALF-FULL REPORT 04/25/08

We open the HFR this week by asking:  Dare we hope for Hillary?

It's a fun debate over who would be easier for McCain to beat, Obambi or the PIAPS, almost as much fun as watching them rip each other's political guts out.  McCain could score a Reagnesque electoral victory over either of these two losers, but I want him to go up against Her Shrillness.  There's suddenly real hope that he will...

... Which brings us to the delightful subject of the North Carolina GOP Anti-Obama ad.  It is fabulous -- And it is really funny to see how many smart conservatives - even Rush Limbaugh who's normally really smart - have been suckered by John McCain's denouncing it...

... Let's raise a more than half-full glass of congratulations to the brave leaders of the North Carolina Republican Party.  We need more Republicans with their courage.  What we need fewer of is the editorial writers of the New York Times, whose op-eds provide the propaganda marching orders for the entire liberal media.  Looks like we get our wish...

... We close the HFR this week with absolutely the most thrilling and uplifting headline of recent times:  Food Crisis Starts Eclipsing Climate Change Worries

How great is that?  Nothing like a little mass world-wide starvation to make people doubt in the religious dogma of warm-mongering.  Finally - finally - it just may be that people aren't willing to go back to the Stone Age in order to placate Algore.

PROFESSIONAL AT BEING OBLIVIOUS

If you knew how to make life better for your fellow Americans, would you? The political class in Washington constantly claims it "cares about you," but when it comes to policy many do just the opposite.

Most people understand the Republicans messed up by allowing nondefense spending to grow faster than the economy. The Democrats ran against the irresponsible Republicans by claiming they would be "fiscally responsible."

So, rather than present a budget that would reduce the growth rate of domestic spending, they have just proposed one that would increase it, even above Republican proposals, and require increases in taxes.

You can only wonder if they are even more brain dead than the Republicans.

THE POISON THAT IS KILLING THE WEST

The media photo that best explains the Iranian seizure of 15 British sailors and marines last Friday (3/23) is not one that shows them eating and "being well cared for," nor of female sailor Faye Turney wearing a Moslem headscarf.

It is this one of a "Walk of Witness" parade in London the day after the hostage seizure (Saturday 3/24) that had nothing to do with it:

so_sorry

3,000 people wearing color-of-mourning black T-shirts saying "So Sorry" paraded in front of Big Ben and the Parliament Building to mark the 200th anniversary of the law abolishing the slave trade throughout the British Empire.

What were these people so sorry about?  You would think that this would be a joyous occasion, the bicentennial celebration of a historically heroic British achievement - the abolishment of the slave trade.

But no, these self-flagellants were in deep mortification over the previous existence of what was abolished - an institution as old as history, accepted by every civilization for thousands of years.  They perverted something morally noble into an excuse for feeling morally guilty.  This is the poison that is killing the West, the poison that empowers the evil of the West's enemies such as the mullahs of Iran.

A GAGGED GENERAL, A TRAPPED PRESIDENT, A MUDDLED MISSION

The classified status report from Afghanistan by Gen. Stanley McChrystal was censored by the White House before its submission. As a result, it's all bun and no burger.

The administration preferred a politically expedient blah-blah "report" that grants the White House a time-out. But there's no time-out for our soldiers and Marines (our enemies won't listen to the ref). Guess who pays the price while Obama plays Hamlet?

The result? We've got a general who's been gagged, a president trapped by his campaign promises, a muddled mission, crippling restrictions on our troops, a resurgent enemy, a worthless Afghan government -- and an AWOL establishment media that, after hammering the Bush administration, gives Obama a pass on American casualties.
