THE REVOLUTION WILL EAT ITS OWN

The real villains in our economic crisis are those in the political class who pandered to the voter by promising more in benefits to be paid for by others.  As more and more people lose their jobs, the demand for government payments grows, making the situation worse and worse. The U.S. government is spending roughly 40 percent more than it is taking in.

The simple fact is that the amount of explicit and implicit debt that the United States and other governments have incurred cannot and will not be paid back in full. The political class will try to cure the debt mess with inflation, price controls, tax increases and confiscation, but it will only make things worse.

As more and more jobs and homes are destroyed by the debt crisis, the ranks of the revolutionaries will grow until, finally, the new "peasants" realize that the rich are gone and it is the political class who is responsible for the mess.

As Mr. Obama and many liberal Democrats embrace the Wall Street protesters, I wonder if they have not only forgotten (or ever knew) good economics, but also the lessons of history. Maximilien Robespierre, a great orator, most certainly did not intend for himself to be guillotined as he and his colleagues unleashed the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution.

THANKS, JULIAN!

I can't believe how much fun this WikiLeaks hysteria is.  All kinds of normally sane people absolutely going berserk-o, publicly demanding the perp involved, an Aussie named Julian Assange, be assassinated or tried for treason and executed.

How to respond to such totally over the top lunacy except to say Whiskey Tango Foxtrotting Foxtrot?  Maybe there will be items to emerge out of the quarter-million "secret" US diplomatic cables that will justify the anger - but so far, the stuff that's been released is great.

We'll soon discuss why in detail, but first let's talk about the huge debt of gratitude Sarah Palin owes Julian Assange.  All you Palinistas out there - and I'm one - should shout Hallelujah for the enormous act of public service Assange has performed.  He has single-handedly obliterated - as in nuked - Hillary Clinton's chances for the White House.

Everyone in Washington knows Zero is a one-termer.  Sarah would clean his clock in 2012 - just as would any conservative GOP candidate.  But the reality is that Sarah would lose to Hillary.  HRC is a far more formidable Dem candidate than Zero.  Should Zero pull a LBJ and not run, or should she challenge him in the primaries, she would win the nomination - and the presidency.

Not any more, for that analysis is so yesterday.  "The greatest foreign policy disaster in US history" has happened on Hillary's watch.  Any chief executive would have to fire her, and Zero needs a scapegoat in any regard.   Her political career is over - finita la musica, the Clinton's music is finished.  Thanks, Julian.

TO LIVE OR JUST BE ALIVE – THAT’S THE QUESTION

[An extraordinarily poignant and vividly powerful eyewitness account of the protests for freedom in Tehran yesterday, June 20, by a philosophy professor at Tehran University.]

We gather up with my students on Saturdays for a private class. We cook and eat together, then talk of philosophy. This time there was no class. We only tried to keep up our morale. We were very determined but scared.

That is how I can describe the most people who came out to attend the demonstration today. After the fierce speech [by Ayatollah Khomenei] at the Friday prayers, we knew that today we would be treated differently. We felt so vulnerable, more than ever, but at the same time were aware of our power, which, no matter how influential it is collectively, would have done little to protect us today.

We could only take our bones and flesh to the streets and expose them to batons and bullets. Two different feelings fight inside you without mixing with one another. To live or to just be alive, that's the question.

AFGHAN POPPIES UPDATE

Two years ago, in Afghan Poppies: What The Bush White House Should Really Be Afraid Of, I told you about CIA collusion and incompetence regarding opium production in Afghanistan.

That was in 2003. Since then, Afghanistan’s poppy crop has exploded. According to Robert Charles, in his capacity as chief counternarcotics official at the State Department, the poppy crop went from 152,000 acres in 2003 to 515,000 acres in 2004 - producing $7 billion in opium and heroin money.

This money is financing Al Qaeda, Abu Musab al Zarqawi in Iraq, and international Moslem terrorism - yet the CIA is too impossibly incompetent to stop it, and the Pentagon simply refuses to.

SHOULD WE BE SURPRISED OBAMA WANTS SECRETARIES OF DEFENSE & STATE WHO HATE ISRAEL?

Many in the American Jewish community are aghast to discover that President Obama is planning to appoint former Senator Chuck Hagel to serve as Defense Secretary. If you want the skinny on how Hagel has come to be known as one of the few ferociously anti-Israel senators in the past generation, Carl from Jerusalem at Israel Matzav provides it.

Meantime, all I can say is I don't understand how anyone can possibly be surprised. Shortly after word came out that Hagel is the frontrunner for the nomination, I read a quaint little blog post written by a conservative leaning commentator voicing her belief that Obama wouldn't want to risk his relations with Israel's supporters by appointing Hagel.

But as Powerline pointed out yesterday (12/17), this is the entire point of the nomination.

Obama wants to hurt Israel. He does not like Israel. He is appointing anti-Israel advisors and cabinet members not despite their anti-Israel positions, but because of them.

WHY DEMOCRAT BANKING REGULATIONS HURT LOW-INCOME AMERICANS MOST

Imagine what life would be like if you did not have a bank account and a credit or debit card. It would be much harder to pay your bills, take trips on airlines (which normally require a credit or debit card), and receive payments, just to start.

The shocking thing is that more than one-quarter of all American households are unbanked or underbanked and that this number is rising, not falling, largely because of ill-thought-out financial regulation and policies.

The term "unbanked" refers to people who have neither checking nor savings accounts. "Underbanked" refers to people who have either a checking or savings account but rely on alternative services such as non-bank money orders and check cashing, payday loans, pawn shops, refund anticipation loans, etc., at least once a year. These alternative sources usually are much more costly than banking services.

Banking services to lower-income people have become increasingly expensive directly because of unthinking government regulators.

ESCAPE FROM AMERICA

Folks - get ready for your brain to go on a roller coaster ride. Buckle up...

The best rum punch in the Caribbean is made by Captain George Clarke,  who owns the Sweetfield Manor B&B in the Barbados.  Late last month (October), I was enjoying his libation while watching a truly glorious ocean sunset when we were joined by a couple who had just arrived from New York.  They looked like they needed a drink.

George poured them each a glass from his ever-full pitcher, sprinkled a little grated nutmeg on top, and said, "Welcome to the Barbados.  What would you folks like to do on the island?"

They cast a glance at each other.  After a long sip and a long sigh, the lady answered, "Escape from America."

In response to my, shall we say quizzical glance, she held up her glass and said, "After two or three of these, maybe I can explain."  We enjoyed the sunset quietly.  I took a picture of it that was so good George offered to exchange his secret rum punch recipe for it.

There was a rustling in the trees above.  "That's a troop of green monkeys," George explained.  "They usually come through about now.  Green monkeys escaped from Africa on a boat some three hundred years ago..."

George let this comment hang in the twilight air, so I followed it up with, "For centuries, people have been escaping to America.  You folks want to escape from it?"

George poured them another rum punch.  The lady wiped a tear from her eye.  "Yes, from," she answered, "... we can't stand it anymore, we have to get out.  What happened to me at the Newark airport coming here was the final straw."

YOU SCARE ME

Dear President Obama,

You are the thirteenth President under whom I have lived and unlike any of the others, you truly scare me.

You scare me because after months of exposure, I know nothing about you.

You scare me because I do not know how you paid for your expensive Ivy League education and your upscale lifestyle and housing with no visible signs of support.

You scare me because you did not spend the formative years of youth growing up in America and culturally you are not an American.

You scare me because for over half your life you have aligned yourself with radical extremists who hate America and you refuse to publicly denounce these radicals who wish to see America fail.

HOWARD AND HARRIET

OK, now that I’ve gotten the outrageousness of the Miers nomination off my chest, let me tell you a story about a wonderful guy named Howard Papush. In 1980, Howard had one of the all-time coolest jobs in Hollywood. As the “talent coordinator” for the Tonight Show, Howard was a primary gatekeeper deciding who got to be a guest and sit in that chair talking to Johnny Carson on national television.

Let me tell you how Howard reminds me of Harriet Miers.

OBAMA’S DISASTER OF SYRIA

Watching the nightmare in Syria unfold, you have to ask yourself: Could the Obama administration have made a worse hash out of the situation if it had tried?

Short of an outright Iranian victory that saw the Assad regime's power fully restored, it's hard to imagine a more dire set of circumstances for U.S. interests. The Syrian state is well on its way to imploding. A multiplicity of increasingly well-armed militias are rushing to fill the vacuum. At the forefront of the fight are a growing number of radical Islamist groups, including some affiliated with al Qaeda.

The prospect that Assad' s demise will be accompanied by the use (and/or proliferation) of chemical weapons and massive communal bloodletting gets higher by the day. Libya on steroids is what we're looking at, only this time not on the distant periphery of the Middle East but in its heartland, a gaping strategic wound that is likely to threaten the stability and wellbeing of Syria's five neighbors -- critical American partners all -- for years to come.

Does it require saying that it need not have been this way? Evidently yes.

A NOTE ON FREEDOM AND LIBERTY

Istanbul, Turkey. How free is Turkey? Turkey is almost entirely Muslim but lacks most of the repressive characteristics of many of the Arab Muslim countries.

It has a largely free market with a high rate of economic growth. But it ranks in the middle among other countries in terms of economic freedom and per capita income. It also has less religious freedom and freedom of speech than is common in most of Europe and the United States and, thus, less liberty.

The Mont Pelerin Society, most of whose members are economists and other scholars who were inspired by the great economist and philosopher F.A. Hayek, is holding a meeting here in Istanbul to discuss the nation, the state and liberty. The discussants are drawn from many countries and cultures, resulting in a very stimulating debate, some of which is summarized here, along with my own observations and thoughts.

LIVE FREE OR DIE

That's the state motto of New Hampshire - right on NH license plates.  Most consider it a rephrase of Virginian Patrick Henry's immortal "Give me liberty or give me death."  That's the personal message.  Yet it's also a message to America:  if America ceases to be free, ceases to extol and value the individual liberty of its citizens, America as a nation will die.

The voters of New Hampshire absorbed this message with a vengeance last week.  Before then, the NH bicameral legislature - called the General Court - had a Dem majority of 225 out of 400 in the state House and 14 out of 24 in the state Senate.

Get ready for the new numbers:  on Nov 2nd,  the Republicans went from 175 to 297 in the House and from 10 to 19 in the Senate.  Both are veto-proof super-majorities, which will come in handy when they repeal the homosexual "marriage" law Dems passed last year.  Dem Gov John Lynch's veto will mean nothing.

A lot of America followed NH's lead last week.  The GOP gained 675 state legislature seats nationwide, the most since 1928.  It will now control Congressional redistricting for the 2012 election in 13 states with 165 districts - while the Dems will have four states with 40 districts.  This on top of:

Governors - before 11/02, 26 Dem 24 GOP; now 19 Dem 29 GOP (via cheating by Quinn in IL; MN undecided)
Senate - before 11/02, 59 Dem, 41 GOP; now 53 Dem, 47 GOP (via cheating by Murray in WA, Bennett in CO, and Reid in NV)
House - before 11/02, 238 Dem , 178 GOP; now 189 Dem, 240 GOP (via Dem cheating in all close races; 6 still undecided)

Let's not focus on Dem cheating.  That's what Dems do, thanks to their ends-justify-the-means Marxist morality.  Let's focus on the extraordinary conservative triumph over the cheating.  A great majority of Americans chose last week to live free and not die.  We really had something to celebrate at the TTP Victory Rendezvous this past weekend.

A LETTER TO AMERICA FROM A DODGE DEALER

My name is George C. Joseph.  I am the sole owner of Sunshine Dodge-Isuzu, a family owned and operated business in Melbourne, Florida. My family bought and paid for this automobile franchise 35 years ago in 1974. I am the second generation to manage this business.

We currently employ 50+ people and before the economic slowdown we employed over 70 local people.  We are active in the community and the local chamber of commerce. We deal with several dozen local vendors on a day to day basis and many more during a month.  All depend on our business for part of their livelihood.

On Thursday, May 14, 2009 I was notified that my Dodge franchise, that we purchased, will be taken away from my family on June 9, 2009 without compensation and given to another dealer at no cost to them.

HOW IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA CAN THIS HAPPEN?

NERVOUS IN MECCA

It was certainly no coincidence that on the 4th anniversary of 9/11 last Sunday, front page headlines appeared in the nation’s newspapers entitled Pentagon Revises Nuclear Strike Plan .

It was a public shot across the Jihadi Terrorists’ bow, meant to make them and folks in Mecca nervous. You know why, since you read Mad in Mecca in To The Point back in October, 2004, and George Bush and the Sword of Damocles: Why There Hasn’t Been Another 9/11 last January.

It’s the clearest sign yet that Mecca is being held as a nuclear hostage.

EUROPE HAS A COVENANT WITH DEATH

The collapse has begun. Nihilism thrives in Europe.

A new book written by Alejandro Macarrón Larumbe, El Suicidio Demográfico de España" (The Demographic Suicide of Spain - although in Spanish, here is a Power Point summary in English) delivers a death sentence for Europe.

The German giant is also ditching.  The weekly Der Spiegel has a long article titled "A Land without Children."  The European Union, which offers its citizens every comfort, with first-rate health care, long holidays and sit-down lunches, protected jobs and generous welfare, has the world's lowest fertility rate (1.47 children per woman) and the highest percentage of a population that is over 65 years old (16.4 per cent of the population in the EU).

Meanwhile, nearly one in three pregnancies in Europe is terminated by abortion, according to the Gutmacher Institute in the US, and all over Europe gay marriage is advancing (France and UK will soon approve it). The model is Spain, where you have no more "father" and "mother", but Parent (progenitor) A, and Parent (progenitor) B.

In the Netherlands, you can order a mobile euthanasia van to your house. It's the first experiment in the world of door-to-door euthanasia and the insurance covers the cost of the operation.
