WHY WE HAVEN’T FOUND OSAMA

One of the most frequently asked questions we get at To The Point is: Where’s Osama? Why haven’t we found and killed him?

We’ve gotten another flurry because of the recent claims that “mercs” or mercenaries, “professional soldiers for paramilitary corporations that attend the annual Soldier of Fortune convention in Las Vegas” know where he is - a hidden valley called Dir in northwest Pakistan.

I’ve known Col. Bob Brown, the publisher of Soldier of Fortune magazine for almost 30 years. We almost got ourselves blown up together in Afghanistan with the Mujahaddin back in the 1980s. I told Bob about this claim and he laughed his head off.

“The last Soldier of Fortune convention we had was back in 2000,” he told me. “You should know, Wheeler, you were our keynote speaker! No one in the world is in touch with “mercs” more than me. They would have one simple word for these Elvis sightings of Osama: (expletive). The guy making this claim, Paul Williams, is an (expletive).” Bob doesn’t mince words.

The claim that OBL has been in Dir “since he escaped from Tora Bora in December 2001” is laughable. Williams has, of course, never been remotely close to the place. I’ve been all over the area, from Peshawar through Dir to Chitral in the Hindu Kush, and know it would be easy to get him if he’s there. He’s not in Dir.

Osama is in....

THE PALESTINIANS’ NAZI HERITAGE

With the nations of Europe and the rest of the world lining up to support the PLO bid to receive non-member state status at the UN General Assembly, it is worth noting two anniversaries of related but forgotten events.

Of course, everyone in Israel knows the obvious anniversary today -- Nov. 29, 1947 was the day the UN General Assembly passed the plan to recommend the partition of the British Mandate of Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab state. The Jews accepted the plan. The Arabs -- both local and regional - rejected it.

On November 28, 1941 the religious and political leader of the Palestinian Arabs and one of the most influential leaders of the Arab world, the "Grand Mufti," Haji Amin al Husseini met with Adolf Hitler in Berlin. Husseini had courted the Nazis since just after the Nazis rose to power in 1933. He was forced to flee the British Mandate in 1937 when he expanded his fourth terror war against the Jews, that he began in 1936 to include the British as well.

In 1920 Husseini personally invented what later became known as the Palestinian national movement. He shaped its identity around the sole cause of destroying the Jewish presence in the land of Israel.  (Note: The story of how Husseini came to be Grand Mufti is told by Jack Wheeler in The English Godfather of Palestinian Terrorism, December 2003.)

During World War II, Husseini used his radio broadcasts to shape the political and religious  consciousness of the Moslem world by fusing Islamic Jew hatred with annihilationist Nazi anti-Semitism. Whereas much of the Nazi anti-Semitic ideology was discredited in postwar Europe, it has remained the single most resonant theme of Arab politics  for 66 years.

HALF-FULL REPORT 02/03/12

Before we discuss who should be the HFR Hero of the Week, today we're initiating its antipode:  designating the HFR Scum of the Week.

The hands-down winner this week is an evil, racist, corrupt, lying, treasonous accomplice to murder who belongs in jail.  Instead he's the most powerful law enforcement official in the country as head of the Zero Justice Department:  Eric "I'm the Attorney General of the United States, OK?" Holder.

He testified at a Congressional hearing yesterday (2/02), once again refusing to accept any responsibility or knowledge of his department's Fast & Furious gun-running scandal that, had it been conducted by a Republican Attorney General would have gotten him impeached and imprisoned long before now.

Holder's testimony was so disgustingly outrageous it prompted the mother of murdered border patrol agent Brian Terry - murdered with a Fast & Furious gun - to publicly label Holder a joke and a coward.  He is certainly that and so much worse.

HOW DANGEROUS IS A PRESIDENT WHO IS DEVOID OF REALITY?

President Obama's speech this past week (9/08)should have been labeled, "Believe what I say, not what I do." All too much of the speech was devoid of reality.

At one point he said, "And I agree there are some rules and regulations that put an unnecessary burden on businesses at a time when they can least afford it. That's why I ordered a review of all government regulations. So far, we've identified over 500 reforms, which will save billions of dollars over the next few years."

The reality is far different. There are thousands of new regulations that have either been implemented or are under consideration that have not been subject to meaningful or rigorous cost-benefit analyses.   The reality is that millions of Americans are without jobs solely because of the president's regulatory incompetence or worse.

WILL AMERICA BE A SERIOUS COUNTRY AGAIN?

Soufriere, St. Lucia.  Thirsty?  How about a cool one?  Will this place do?

st_lucia_beer.jpg

I'm here on business (along with Chile, the Caribbean island nation of St. Lucia has the freest economy and lowest taxes in the Western Hemisphere), but who could resist taking a break at this place?  Looking out onto a view like this would certainly, I thought, give my brain a break from anxiety over November 2nd.

No such luck.  Not even this place will shut my brain up, nor quell the disquiet.  I've been going around the world for two months now - and it's caused me to think more than ever about America and her place among the nations of the world.  The one question that keeps reverberating in my head is:  Will America be a serious country again?

MORE CARBON DIOXIDE WILL BENEFIT MANKIND

Testimony before the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee on February 25, 2009

Madam Chairman and members, thank you for the opportunity to appear before the Committee on Environment and Public Works to testify on Climate Change. My name is William Happer, and I am the Cyrus Fogg Bracket Professor of Physics at Princeton University.

We have been in a period of global warming over the past 200 years... (while) atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) have increased from about 280 to 380 parts per million over the past 100 years.  Is this good or bad for humanity?

I believe that the increase of CO2 is not a cause for alarm and will be good for mankind. I predict that future historians will look back on this period much as we now view the period just before the passage of the 18th Amendment to the US Constitution to prohibit "the manufacturing, sale or transportation of intoxicating liquors."

At the time, the 18th amendment seemed to be exactly the right thing to do - who wanted to be in league with demon rum? It was the 1917 version of saving the planet.

OFFING HUGO

Out of the mouths of babes and crackpots

There's no doubt Pat Robertson has a penchant for saying manically crackpot things like warning the city of Orlando, Florida in 1998 that if it allowed a Gay Pride parade, God would punish the city by sending “earthquakes, tornadoes, and possibly a meteor.”

The press has had a field day this week reciting past wacky Patisms in an attempt to deride his call for the assassination of Venezuela’s Marxist dictator Hugo Chavez. And yes, the point is well made that Christian ministers are not the sort of folks who should advocate such things. But what Pat said is nonetheless true.

Of course, we or somebody, anybody, should knock off Chavez. Doing so would be one of the greatest contributions to peace and freedom in the world today.

HALF-FULL REPORT 01/27/12

Here's a quartet of choices for who should be the HFR Hero of the Week.

When the week started out, the choice seemed obvious:  an extraordinary athlete with the initials of TT.  Not Tim Tebow, however admirable he is.  It's the greatest hockey goalie on earth, who enabled the Boston Bruins to win the 2011 Stanley Cup (he was named MVP), Tim Thomas.

Then on Wednesday (1/25), two Republican governors came into Hero contention.  First is Arizona's with a name all tipplers admire, Jan Drinkwine Brewer (yes, Drinkwine is her maiden name and she married a fellow named Brewer:  how can you beat that?).  You've all seen the picture of her telling off Zero on the Phoenix tarmac regarding his attack on Arizona's attempts to protect its border from illegal invasion.

The night before his tarmac scolding (1/24), Zero delivered his pathetic SOTU speech to a bored Congress.  The GOP response was delivered by Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels.  This is worth reading entire.

So who could give TT and these two governors competition this week?  We don't know their names and never will, just that they are Navy SEALs.

MR. OBAMA’S JOBS SPEECH SHOULD TAKE 30 SECONDS

The Obama administration and others on the left seemed to be stunned when the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported no new net jobs last month (8/11). When President Obama makes his "jobs speech," the American people will see whether he and his advisers have learned anything from the three years of Obamanomics failures.

If they have not, his speech will drone on and on, putting his listeners and the economy to sleep.  If they have, then his speech could electrify his listeners and the economy.  Such a speech need not be long.  Here is what he could say Thursday night in 30 seconds or less:

PARADISE LOST

Majuro Atoll, Marshall Islands, Pacific Ocean.  What is your vision of a coral atoll paradise?  A lagoon of crystal clear turquoise water, a beach of pure white sand edged by coconut palms, their fronds rustling in the gentle trade winds?

Friendly, welcoming islanders skillfully sailing their outrigger canoes beyond the reef to capture a bounty of fish which they happily share with you?  An underwater aquarium that's a snorkler's or scubadiver's dream?  A thatch hut, a hammock, a perfectly made mai tai or piña colada with which to enjoy a perfect sunset in the glistening ocean?

There are such places on this planet.  If you are searching for one of them, don't come here to Majuro.  This place was a paradise once just as described above.  Now it is a dump.  Literally.  This is one of Majuro's more pristine beaches:

m_trash_beach.jpg

This atoll - this country, the sovereign independent United Nations member nation of the Republic of the Marshall Islands of which Majuro is the capital - is Paradise Lost.  It is the vision, the goal, the template that Democrats have for America.  The future they strive for and dream they have for our country is the Paradise Lost of Majuro Atoll.

THE STIMULUS IS A STEP TOWARDS A SOVIET AMERICA

[Senator Coburn, R-OK, recently gave this speech on the floor of the Senate]

With this Stimulus Bill, we are going in exactly the wrong direction. We ought to be standing on the principles that made this country great.

I want to make sure the American people know what is in this bill. I think once they know what is in this bill, they are going to reject it out of hand.

We are at a seminal moment in our country. We will either start living within the confines of realism and responsibility or we will blow it and we will create the downfall of the greatest nation that ever lived.

This bill is the start of that downfall. To abandon a market-oriented society and transfer it to a Soviet-style, government-centered, bureaucratic-run and mandated program, that is the thing that will put the stake in the heart of freedom in this country.

STERILIZING SEWER CITY

With people dying from infected water in New Orleans, which won’t be drained for weeks, it is critically important to disinfect the flood water as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The Army Corps of Engineers has many years of institutional experience at safely chlorinating sewer water. They can scale up that experience for the “Sewer City” that New Orleans has become.

Chlorine is a standard treatment for disinfecting sewage. It would take a few railroad tank cars of liquid chlorine for the job.

LEGITIMACY AND DISOBEDIENCE

These are times that try men's souls, wrote Thomas Paine in 1776, and so is the time that's upon us now. So, it is time to examine our core beliefs, very clearly and plainly. More than anything else, difficult times demand that we know what we believe - not with shallow slogans, but down to our depths.

"Conservative values" are not a core belief - they are derivative, not primary. The term is, at best, a short-hand reference to a set of ideas. But unless you have a very clear grasp of what those values are, the slogan becomes a cheap imitation. We must know the real thing, not merely a group of words that stand in its place.

Have you ever asked yourself what makes a government legitimate?

Legitimacy in human government is far more important than force. Ruling humans by force alone is a losing proposition: The ruled will adapt; they'll hide their grain before it can be taken, or they'll just leave. In order to rule humans successfully, they have to be willing. This willingness can be attained either by manipulation or by convincing people that joining together provides better results.

A government that convinces people to support it has a valid claim to legitimacy. A government that manipulates people into supporting it does not.

HALF-FULL REPORT 01/20/12

Absolutely no doubt who the HFR Hero of the Week is:  Rick Perry, who took a bullet for the team.  He was all set to give an adaptation of a suggested closing statement I wrote for him (appended below) at the South Carolina debate last night (1/19), when he decided that if he continued, the Not Romney vote would remain so split Romney would win.

Now he won't.  Gingrich will win the SC primary tomorrow (1/21) - despite the Obamamedia trying to take him out with his coyote ugly shrew ex-wife from Hell - thanks to Perry.

That said, there is also absolutely no doubt who the HFR Jerk of the Week is - the schmuck, the phony "social conservative," the corrupt horse's derriere of the year - who singlehandedly caused Perry to lose the nomination because Perry told him to shove it for soliciting a bribe while Santorum said, "Let's talk."

We're talking about...

ECONOMIC GROWTH FOR WASHINGTON DUMMIES

Did you know that in Denmark, the poorest 30% pay 14.1% of all taxes and the richest pay 48.7%  -- while in the United States, the poorest 30% pay just 6.1 % of all taxes and the richest 30% pay a whopping 65.3%?

The surprising thing is not that the richest pay most of the taxes but that the U.S. has nearly the most progressive tax system in the world, while the Scandinavian countries have about the least progressive tax systems, contrary to commonly held belief.

The above facts, along with hundreds of other useful tidbits, are found in a compelling new book, Government Versus Markets: The Changing Economic Role of the State (Cambridge University Press, 2011), by one of the world's most highly regarded economists, Vito Tanzi.   It, and one other book, should be required reading for Washington dummies.
