HALF-FULL REPORT 04/27/12

Let's start the week with two inspiring antidotes to black racism.  You are likely as sick and tired of black racist guilt-mongering, grievance, threats, and violence as I am.

All the Twitter threats of riots if George Zimmerman is acquitted.  The "Justice for Trayvon!" beating of Matthew Owens in Mobile.  The "Empty your pockets, white boy" beating in Chicago.  The  group "Trayvon!" beating that will "permanently disfigure" the victim's face, and the mob "Trayvon!" stomping of a man stopping a robbery, both in Gainsville.

Is there a solution?  Here's one:

Actually, a real one emerged this week.  Maybe two.

DEMOCRACY VS. BUREAUCRACY

The financial crisis in Europe has resulted in the appointment of new prime ministers in both Greece and Italy, by in reality the Germans and French, rather than through the ballot box in Greece and Italy. This raises the question, "Is it possible to have both a bureaucratic welfare state and a democracy that protects individual liberties?"

In the United States, as well as most other countries, the people are increasingly governed and regulated by unelected bureaucrats who create "administrative law."

The rise of the Bureaucratic State, at least in the U.S., is only about 80 years old. The number of federal employees grew slowly over the first hundred years of the American Republic so by the time of the first Grover Cleveland administration in the 1880s, there were still fewer than 100,000 federal civilian employees. By 1925, the number had grown to about a half a million, and now there are almost 3 million civilian federal government employees, plus another 17 million state and local government employees.

There are two fundamental reasons for this trend:

THE OPPORTUNITY OF EGYPT

It's a sign of age when you see pictures of two million people massing in Cairo's Tahrir Square, and the very first question that occurs to you is:  How do they all go to the bathroom?

It's a puzzle.  What isn't a puzzle is the next question:  What do these masses of Egyptian demonstrators want?  Let's start the answer by recognizing that it's very clear what they do not want, what they are not chanting and demonstrating for:  Radical Islam and an Iranian-type Islamic theocracy.

Sure they are 90% Moslems (about 10% of Egypt's 80 million are Coptic Christians), and when the muezzin calls out prayer time, the demonstrators kneel en masse to pray.  Yet whenever someone starts shouting religious chants over a loudspeaker, the crowd shouts back for him to stop.

Yes, this is all a moving target.  Yes, thugs from Napoleon to Lenin to Mao to Khomeini succeeded by taking over, not starting, an already ongoing revolution. So yes, Egypt could go sideways and we could have a Islamic mega-disaster.  But there's never opportunity without danger, for dangers are what make opportunities possible.

Therefore - will all the doomsaying handwringing conservatives please stop their ceaseless worry-worting about the Iqwan - Iqwan Muslimi, the Moslem Brotherhood - and focus on how we can take advantage of the Arab Revolt instead?

Focus first on three basic facts.

HAVE YOU NO SHAME? HAVE YOU NO DECENCY?

[This literary, moral, and political masterpiece is the text of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech to the UN General Assembly on Sept. 24, 2009]

I stand here today as the Prime Minister of Israel, the Jewish state, and I speak to you on behalf of my country and my people.

The United Nations was founded after the carnage of World War II and the horrors of the Holocaust. It was charged with preventing the recurrence of such horrendous events.  Yesterday the President of Iran stood at this very podium, spewing his latest anti-Semitic rants. Just a few days earlier, he again claimed that the Holocaust is a lie.

To those who refused to come here and to those who left this room in protest, I commend you. You stood up for moral clarity and you brought honor to your countries.  But to those who gave this Holocaust-denier a hearing, I say on behalf of my people, the Jewish people, and decent people everywhere: Have you no shame? Have you no decency?

A mere six decades after the Holocaust, you give legitimacy to a man who denies that the murder of six million Jews took place and pledges to wipe out the Jewish state.  What a disgrace! What a mockery of the charter of the United Nations!

THE EARTH GETTING GREENER EXPOSES CLIMATE ALARMISM AS A TOTAL FRAUD

Did you know that the Earth is getting greener, quite literally? Satellites are now confirming that the amount of green vegetation on the planet has been increasing for three decades. This will be news to those accustomed to alarming tales about deforestation, overdevelopment and ecosystem destruction.

This possibility was first suspected in 1985 by Charles Keeling, the scientist whose meticulous record of the content of the air atop Mauna Loa in Hawaii first alerted the world to the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Mr. Keeling's famous curve showed not only a year-by-year increase in carbon dioxide levels but a season-by-season oscillation in the concentration.

The latest and most detailed satellite data, which is yet to be published but was summarized in an online lecture last July by Ranga Myneni of Boston University, confirms that the greening of the Earth has now been going on for 30 years. Between 1982 and 2011, 20.5% of the world's vegetated area got greener, while just 3% grew browner; the rest showed no change.

What explains this trend? Man-made nitrogen fertilizer causes crops to grow faster, but it is having little effect on forests. There are essentially two possibilities: climate and carbon dioxide itself. Warmer, wetter weather should cause more vegetation to grow. But even without warming, an increase in carbon dioxide should itself accelerate growth rates of plants.

CO2 is a scarce resource that plants have trouble scavenging from the air, and plants grow faster with higher levels of CO2 to inhale.

HALF-FULL REPORT 04/20/12

While I was in the deepest bowels of Africa recently - an apt metaphor, by the way, as days after I was in Guinea-Bissau there was a violent military coup - Jack Kelly reported in the HFR of March 30 that Zero was having his worst week ever.

Then the following week, in the HFR of April 06, I had to conclude was even worse for Zero than the previous. And last week, in the HFR of April 13, we reveled in the "no-good, lousy, really bad week Zero and the Dems had" - enjoyably worse than the last two.

This run of three straight worst-weeks-ever for Zero sure isn't going to be broken this week.  This just keeps getting better and better.  We're going to have so much fun with this HFR you may not be able to stand it.  We'll start with Mrs. Zero's latest dietary advice:  "Dog:  It's what's for dinner!"

Hitler was devastated over this:

TAXES AND THE TOOTH FAIRY

President Obama said last week that we need to increase tax rates on the wealthiest Americans to obtain an extra $100 billion in tax revenue, and he blamed the failure of Congress' supercommittee on the unwillingness of the Republicans to increase tax rates. Do you agree?

If you think increasing tax rates on the "rich" is the correct economic policy, then you also need to believe the following seven fantasies, each of which is like believing in the Tooth Fairy:

HOW CONGRESS CAN QUICKLY OVERTURN ROE V. WADE

"I am committed to protecting this constitutional right," announced President Zero in his commemoration of the  38th anniversary of the most constitutionally ludicrous - and murderous - Supreme Court decision in US history, Roe v. Wade on Saturday (1/22).

Thanks to the Revolution of Nov. 2nd, Roe  is being targeted as never before, and exactly where it should be:  in the states.  29 states now have pro-life governors, and in 15 of them, pro-life legislators control both legislative chambers. In dozens of states this year, pro-life laws are going to be passed, such as banning abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy and mandating ultrasound screenings.

Meanwhile, back on Capitol Hill, the House is going to fully defund Planned Parenthood and any use of taxpayer dollars to fund abortions in any way.

At last the pro-life forces are on the offense while pro-abortion forces are playing defense.  However...  the ACLU, NOW, and every other liberal legal outfit will try to stymie these efforts in court.  They will find some pro-abortion federal judge somewhere to block them or tie them up for years on appeals.

What if there were a way to short-circuit the whole appeal process?  What if there were a Constitutional short-cut to overturning Roe v. Wade?  There is.

COMMON SENSE CONSERVATISM

[Text of speech delivered at the CLSA Pacific Markets Conference in Hong Kong on September 23, 2009]

You can call me a common-sense conservative. My approach to the issues facing my country and the world, issues that we'll discuss today, are rooted in this common-sense conservatism... Common sense conservatism deals with the reality of the world as it is. Complicated and beautiful, tragic and hopeful, we believe in the rights and the responsibilities and the inherent dignity of the individual.

The opposite of a common-sense conservative is a liberalism that holds that there is no human problem that government can't fix if only the right people are put in charge. Unfortunately, history and common sense are not on its side. We don't trust utopian promises; we deal with human nature as it is.

Common sense tells you that when you're in a hole, you have to stop digging! A common sense conservative looks to history to find solutions to the problems confronting us, and the good news is that history has shown us a way out of this, a way forward from recession.  Ronald Reagan, he was faced with an even worse recession, and he showed us how to get out of here.

If you want real job growth, you cut taxes! And you reduce marginal tax rates on all Americans. Cut payroll taxes, eliminate capital gain taxes and slay the death tax, once and for all. Get federal spending under control, and then you step back and you watch the U.S. economy roar back to life.

We're not interested in government fixes; we're interested in freedom! Freedom! And why shouldn't we be? We're Americans.

WHY DON’T THE GERMANS TRUST OBAMA WITH THEIR GOLD?

Back in the mid-1920s, the head of the German Central Bank, Herr Hjalmar Schacht, went to New York to see Germany's gold. However the NY Fed officials were unable to find the pallet of Germany's gold bullion.

The Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Benjamin Strong was mortified, but to put him at ease Herr Schacht turned to him and said "Never mind, I believe you when you say the gold is there. Even if it weren't you are good for its replacement."

But that was then and this is now. In the eyes of the Germans - and who can blame them? - America has lost its mojo to such a degree that it can no longer be trusted honor its debts, even in the unlikely event that it were financially capable of doing so.

Which is why, following in the footsteps of Venezuela's Hugo Chavez (who may be an idiot but is definitely no fool), Germany is repatriating its gold from the New York Federal Reserve, which will now be stored in Frankfurt.

Now, why in the world would they do that?  Don't they trust Obama with their gold?

HALF-FULL REPORT 04/13/12

As I unquestionably make the best piña colada in the known universe, I am compelled to start the HFR with the thrilling medical news released Wednesday (4/11) that Drinking Alcohol May Significantly Enhance Problem Solving Skills

Researchers at the University of Illinois demonstrated that two pints of beer or two glasses of wine enable guys to think more creatively and solve brain teasers more quickly.  Since my piña colada , in addition to a fully sufficient quantity of rum, contains Durk Pearson's brain nutrition formula, it's got to do better than a couple of brewskis.  Too bad it's so early in the day.  The sun won't be over the yardarm for hours.

From Norkland, comes what is surely the week's most hilarious news.  It can be lethal to embarrass and humiliate a god - or someone who believes he should be worshipped as a god.  A 28 year-old kid who's trying to step into his grandfather's and father's megalomaniacal shoes and establish his own godlike personality cult now has the whole world laughing at him.

************

Speaking of embarrassment... the world's biggest scandal is currently engulfing Norkland's giant neighbor, China.  There are hundreds of millions of Chinese, inside China and overseas, transfixed by it, with literally thousands of websites and blogs commenting daily - for the story is like a script from a Hollywood blockbuster movie.

WHAT IS HAPPENING TO MONEY

Last week (11/16), the Cato Institute held its annual monetary conference. Speakers included high-ranking officials from the Federal Reserve and monetary experts from the academy, think thanks and financial institutions.

There was unanimous agreement that the world monetary system is in deep trouble, which is obvious to anyone who keeps up with the news. It is easier to observe the problem than to come up with a solution.

The problem is that the major world governments are in the process of destroying the value of the money their citizens hold.

THE COMING ASSASSINATION OF SARAH PALIN

This is what truly terrifies me.  Every American should pray to God that it won't happen.  Yet the fear of it keeps me up at nights.  The death of Sarah Palin by an assassin's bullet could very well prove to be the death of America - and the Left wants both.

The Left hates Sarah Palin for the same reasons it hates America - for Sarah Palin embodies the very best of America and its values, as she is the literal embodiment of the American Dream.

The "climate of hate" the Left constantly accuses the Right of creating is a creation of theirs.  The examples of vicious vitriol towards President Bush, including a film depicting his assassination (it won awards and praise from film critics), were so innumerable they gave rise to a distinct form of mental disorder:  BDS, Bush Derangement Syndrome.

PDS, Palin Derangement Syndrome, is BDS on steroids laced with LSD.  It's a brain infection that's been on full display by the Enemedia and the Loughner Left since the Tucson Massacre.  To their frustration, this latest attempt to destroy her has failed.  After her address to the nation accusing them of blood libel, polls found that her popularity had increased rather than plummeted.

Thus the Loughner Left is more enraged at her than ever.  Which is why there are news reports of an "incredible" spike in death threats against her.

HOW TEXAS CAN SAVE AMERICA FROM WASHINGTON

As the federal government continuously churns out ideas and policies that drive our nation deeper and deeper in debt, citizens and taxpayers are right to be worried.

From federal "stimulus" bills that force state governments to change laws, raise taxes and increase spending, to cap and trade proposals that will run our energy industry into the ground, to emerging plans for an unprecedented and unsustainable expansion of government health care, it is clear that the swollen river of our federal government has overflowed its banks.

Frustration with a Washington run amok is fueling the resurgent interest in the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Level-headed Americans are pushing back through the growing TEA Party movement.

This groundswell of classic American activism is giving citizens a conduit for their beliefs and sending a clear message they will not stand idly by as Washington spends their tax dollars and limits their freedoms with increasing arrogance. I predict that our increasingly frustrated national electorate will look to the states for answers, starting with Texas.
