WHY IT’S HARD TO TELL WHAT’S TRUE

A healthy relationship with the truth is essential for a happy, successful life.

But this is not a simple thing; the ability to see, acknowledge, and accept what’s true – about ourselves, our circumstances, our relationships; our own strengths and weaknesses, and the challenges we face – is actually much harder than it may seem.

We have all known people in our lives who are smart, self-aware, and curious, but they keep making the same mistakes over and over in one particular area of their lives. You see it, other people see it, but they don’t seem to see it at all.

It’s even more difficult when other people are seeing things that we don’t see – and seeing that we don’t see them.

I remember as a young psychotherapist in my 20s (I’ve been doing this for a very long time!) discovering a new approach or technique that seemed to do wonders. All I could see was the success, and it was exciting.

What I wasn’t seeing was my own confirmation bias, that would minimize my assessment of where it didn’t work very well, and maximize where it did.

It took some time and experience to see that every approach has its strengths and weaknesses, and every client I work with is unique – what’s helpful with one person may do nothing for another.

And this sort of confirmation bias is something I still have to stay continually vigilant about – because our biases never disappear.

WHEN LIBERALISM GETS ITS WAY. EXAMPLES FROM HISTORY – PART 1

On the morning of 17 April 1975, the gates of Phnom Penh opened and a smiling army walked in.

People came out into the street to cheer them. That detail matters and it gets left out of most tellings.

Five years of civil war were over, the American bombers were gone, the corrupt and collapsing Lon Nol government was finished, and the young men coming down the boulevards in black pyjamas and sandals cut from tyres were, for a few hours, liberators. Some of the soldiers were fourteen years old. People handed them food.

Within hours the order went out.

Leave the city. All of it. Now.

THE NAGAS OF LUANG PRABANG

nagas-of-luang-prabangNagas are multi-headed dragons who rise up to protect the former royal capital of Laos, Luang Prabang. The city along the Mekong River has been the center of Lao culture since the 600s. The Kingdom of Laos, “Land of a Million Elephants,” had to struggle for centuries to avoid being absorbed by the empires of Siam and Khmer (Cambodia). It was the French who wrested Laos from Siam (Thailand) in the 1890s, giving it independence in 1953.

For centuries, devout Buddhists have been building beautifully ornate shrines and temples called Wats here in Luang Prabang. Every day at dawn, hundreds of red-robed monks living in the Wats parade through the city streets for donations. Since the Pathet Lao seizure of power in 1975, moving the capital to Vientiane, Luang Prabang is free of politics, preserved as a religious haven and treasure house of Laotian culture.

A few days here is not to be missed. As you enjoy a glass of good French wine at a riverbank café watching the sunset over the Mekong, give thanks to the Nagas who are still protecting this sanctuary city. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #24, photo ©Jack Wheeler)

ARABS AND AZTECS

Aztec human sacrifice

[This Monday’s Archive was originally in TTP on April 29, 2004. 22 years later, the threat of Islam is growing daily in the life of many Americans. Churches being converted into mosques, Moslem prayer calls by loudspeaker in the middle of the night, demands for Sharia law. It has to stop. Cortez compared Aztecs to Arabs, the only Moslems he knew. Here is why.]

Cortez and his Spanish soldiers who conquered the Aztecs are known to history as “Conquistadors.” That label of “Conquerors” was applied to them by their contemporaries — but it originated a generation earlier. It was first used to describe the Spaniards who liberated their own country from Islam.

Arab invaders had swept across Spain in the early 700s, and it took centuries for the Spanish to kick them out. Cortez was not yet 10 years old when they were finally ejected from their last stronghold in Grenada in 1492. When Cortez first looked upon the pyramid temples of the Aztec gods, he called them mezquitas — mosques.

Cortez saw himself as a liberator — just as his fathers had liberated Spain from the Islamic yoke, so he would liberate “New Spain” from the Aztec yoke. Yet he had little idea of how deep were the political-religious parallels between the Arabs and the Aztecs.

The parallels go beyond the death worship of Aztec warriors and Arab suicide-bombers. One of the latter responsible for the train bombings in Madrid declared in a letter: “You (Christians) love life — we (Moslems) love death.” Compare this Aztec poem:

STRANGLER FIG

strangler-figChristmas Island, Indian Ocean, Australia. This huge banyan tree no longer exists. It’s been slowly strangled to death for up to a century.

Seeds of fig vines were deposited by bird droppings in the upper branches of the tree, which sprouted and began to grow downward along the tree trunk, sucking nutrients from the tree along the way. Slowly year after year, they coil and wrap around the entire trunk to the ground, literally strangling the tree out of existence until all that’s left are the huge enveloping fig vines. It’s hollow inside – look carefully above the ground roots and you’ll see a shaft of vertical light.

I’ve seen a good many Strangler Figs in the rain forests of Central Africa and the Amazon – but the ones here on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean are the most spectacular. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #280 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

HALF-FULL REPORT 09/25/26

Mark the date, yesterday September 24, 2026, when the official consolidation of the three great barbarisms of modern times merged together into one. All three are  pathologies of envy: Nazism, preaching race-envy toward "rich exploitative Jews;" Communism, preaching class-envy toward "rich exploitative capitalists;"and Jihadism, preaching culture-envy toward "rich exploitative Western Civilization."

We’ve become familiar with all three embodied into one person like Zohan Mamdani, Hasan Piker, Ilhan Omar, Spain’s Pedro Sanchez.  Yesterday, we witnessed this embodiment globally institutionalized at the United Nations. The UN has 193 Member States and 2 non-member Observers, the Vatican, and “Palestine.”  Claims are made that up to 77 country delegations walked out on Bibi.  That would mean 116 stayed (at least, as a number of those 77, such as Ireland and Slovenia, have denied walking out).

So it is interesting that the only Europe delegation walking out was Spain. China stayed, India stayed, Islamic UAE and Morocco stayed, as did Japan and Australia.  At least 46 out of 49 countries of Sub-Saharan (Black) Africa stayed.  So a quite substantial majority of the world’s nations reject embracing Communism, Nazism, and Jihadism in a devil’s brew – at least publicly on the floor of the UN General Assembly.

Yet, as we all know, so many are doing so surreptitiously or surrendering to it – like Britain, France, Holland, Belgium, Australia, Carney’s Canada, and America’s Democrat Party.

Okay, here we go with news to think about, news to celebrate (like CNN’s coming bloodbath), funny news, and inspiring news.  We have it all, so jump on in!

ON YOM KIPPUR

[On this particular Monday, in lieu of an Archive, I have to get something off my chest. Please bear with me.]

In 2026, the holiest day of the year for Jews, is today, September 21st(until sundown. It is called Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, where one reflects on whatever moral wrongs they have done, commits to never do them again, confesses them to God, and does whatever possible to repair those wrongs done to others.

I am not Jewish, so hope I have expressed correctly this succinct description, as this day is far, far more deeply meaningful to Jewish people than the few words above. Yet this day is for me an opportunity to express a grievance I have that I must explain.

Plainly, I am completely, totally, and utterly sick and tired of this epidemic of Anti-Semitism that has taken over the Democrat Party, that is ubiquitous on social media, college campuses, and news stories of yet another “Free Palestine” protest that often turns violent. If I make even a seemingly pro-Israel comment on X, some bozo will ask “Are you Jewish?” as a smirking condemnation.  Another Dumbtard will go on a rant about “Christ-killers.”  Yet another will express his hatred for “Zionists” as the cause of all the evil in the world.

So let’s be clear. “Anti-Semitism,” “Christ-killers,” or “Zionist” are all euphemisms for Nazism.

THE GREENLAND TRIUMPH IS A SEA CHANGE IN US FOREIGN POLICY

The deal is everything we could ask for, and infinitely more than the Enemedia told you was possible.

But the bigger news is the agreement’s implications for the rest of the world.

With [yesterday’s] signing of the tripartite deal between the United States, Greenland, and Denmark, Donald Trump has achieved yet another masterstroke — like the NATO commitment to increase defense spending more than two-and-a-half times, like the EU trade deal, like booting China out of Panama — that the Enemedia unanimously told you was not merely impossible, but laughable.

Lesson: don’t listen to the Enemedia. It’s not just that they’re biased. They’re also almost always wrong.

To quote Greenland Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the “world has changed a great deal since 1951,” referring to the original security agreement. The people of Greenland “recognize the long-term security threats that you, Mr. President, have rightly spoken about.”

“This agreement should put to rest any doubt today and in the future about where Greenland’s loyalty lies,” Nielsen said.

THE LIB DEMS’ TRANS MADNESS IS A SYMPTOM OF THE LEFT’S COWARDICE

In the UK:

“Only the Conservatives and Reform can be relied upon to uphold women’s rights.”

There is a danger that we draw the wrong conclusions from the Liberal Democrats’ decision to champion trans demands over women’s rights on the very first full day of their conference.

On the face of it, it feels like an own goal, made even worse by a clear misunderstanding on the part of delegates about the guidelines issued by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) in the wake of the ruling by the Supreme Court on how the Equality Act should be interpreted.

Those gathering in Brighton have stated that the EHRC code is “discriminatory and unworkable” and should be overwritten with more “inclusive” rules. But the EHRC is bound by law to issue guidance entirely in line with the Equality Act.

It would be absurd – not to mention illegal – for the EHRC to issue guidance that didn’t reflect their lordships’ ruling on what the Equality Act meant by “women.”

This detail seems to have escaped the trans activists among the Lib Dem delegates, who are also calling for the actual law to be changed but haven’t made their minds up as to what change is needed.

Ultimately, their aim, as is the aim of trans rights activists across the political spectrum, is to deny women the right to exclude from their spaces – changing rooms, toilets and even prisons – men who identify as women. Such men, after all, are women if they say so.

This motion will dominate today’s debate at the conference, and it is understandable that thoughtful observers predict difficult times ahead for a party that places the demands of trans-identified men above the hard-fought-for sex-based rights of women.

But they miss a key factor in all of this.

A FLOCK OF IDIOTS

It may be that the humble camera in America will have to change its name from mundane “camera” to “Flock camera” at the rate some are going. Or possibly they will begin to think that the latter is an entirely new piece of technology. Over the past several months a great deal of misinformation (increasingly, the most common kind of information) has been spread about Flock cameras and their uses.

It has gotten so bad that even some Republicans who are supposed to know better have jumped on the bandwagon, and all of this betrays a great gap in what the public knows regarding who is watching them and what information is being gathered and used.

Unfortunately and predictably, it also betrays the continued inability of law enforcement officials in the United States to treat their now dying profession seriously, and stand up for the truth and be counted on a matter, and to articulate the law as it is versus according to someone’s feelings.

CAN TUCKER CARLSON NAME ANOTHER RELIGION THAT KILLS APOSTATES?

Tucker Carlson has famously written off his distrust of Islam to western propaganda. “I was hysterical,” he said. “I believed [the threat was real]. No, that's not true. Nothing about that is true, but I believed it.”

Going a step further, Carlson now claims, “Sharia Law has made Islamic societies more advanced than the West.”

If Carlson wishes to remain secure in his sanctimony, I would advise him not to speak to a former imam whose book, The Apostate, I had the honor of editing.

If, however, Carlson is as open to the the truth as he claims to be, I will happily send him a signed copy and pick up the postage to boot.

As a boy, Muhammad Abdullah was groomed to become the Franklin Graham of Egyptian Islam, his father being that nation’s preeminent political imam.

As an adolescent, Abdullah was already leading hajjes to Mecca.

Having been educated in English schools, he had a language advantage over his father. His goal was to exploit that advantage and win over the West.

To that end, Abdullah took a year off after college to master the faith so completely no westerner could ever challenge him.

“I had begun my studies from a place of total and complete submission to Allah,” writes Abdullah. “I believed that Islam was superior to all other faiths and that those faiths had borrowed from Islam. I believed that Islam’s every prayer, every ritual, every law had no other purpose than to serve Allah.”

DEFENDING YOURSELF AGAINST VIRUS INFECTIONS – Part 2

[TTP:  We’ll start right where we left off last week, repeating this warning that Durk emphasized, before continuing. The References are repeated at the end, as well.]

Important Notes

Your first line of defense against the flu is hand washing. Most flu infections occur via hand-to-mouth, hand-to-nose, and hand-to-eye transmission. Most aerosol particles produced by coughing and sneezing quickly settle out onto objects in the environment. People touch their faces hundreds of times per day, usually without noting it or realizing it. We think that the biggest effect of wearing a gauze mask is to help interrupt the hand to mouth/nose infection route, though N-95 respirators can filter out small long-lasting aerosol particles. We suggest carrying a small flip top squeeze bottle of rubbing alcohol with you, for convenient anywhere/anytime hand washing.  (Remember that rubbing alcohol is flammable, so don’t use it near flames or while smoking.)

This formula is NOT intended as a replacement for the prescription drugs Tamiflu and Relenza. If you develop the symptoms of a flu infection, see your doctor immediately to get a prescription, and start taking the drug promptly at the prescribed dose. To be effective, these drugs must be taken within 48 hours after developing flu symptoms, and it may be difficult to obtain an appointment with your physician this rapidly, particularly if there are a large number of other people developing flu symptoms at the same time in your area.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE EXPECT A CATASTROPHE

I write sometimes in these columns about thinking biases that can affect our decision making.

Today I want to talk about a way of thinking that can undermine our resilience during hardship, as well as our ability to flourish and succeed.

Catastrophes happen in life.

Natural disasters, tragic accidents, terrible illnesses, heart-rending betrayals, economic calamities, war, famine… Human history has been filled with these, and most of us have been at least touched by something catastrophic.

But a catastrophe is not usually the most likely scenario – if they were common, we wouldn’t think of them as catastrophes; they’d just be the kind of normal troubles we expect in life.

There can be disappointments, hardships, struggles, and losses that hurt badly, requiring us to step up to challenges we would rather not have to step up to. These are not uncommon.

But a true catastrophe is rarely likely.

When we expect catastrophe as a likely scenario, that expectation creates its own troubles, and they can run deep.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: THE LOST CITY OF KUELAP

rh-at-kuelap10,000 feet high in the Amazon cloud forests of northern Peru is a mysterious lost city built by an unknown people many centuries before the Incas existed. Known as Kuelap by villagers in the lowlands below, the Incas called the people who built it Chachapoyas, “Cloud Warriors.” I led an expedition here in 1994, climbing high up into the Amazon Andes to come upon gigantic stone walls 60 feet high surrounding hundreds of stone structures. Here you see Rebel among them. We’ll be here again in a year or two in another exploration of Peru. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #153, photo ©Jack Wheeler)

MONTEZUMA’S CASTLE

montezumas-castleWhen American explorers came upon this extraordinary cliff dwelling in 1860s Arizona, they dubbed it “Montezuma’s Castle” on a whim. The Aztec ruler had nothing to do with it, of course. The Anasazi people built a number of these marvelous structures in the Southwest, high up on cliffs above a river that seasonally flooded.

For hundreds of years the Anasazi flourished, skilled agriculturalists and brilliant at constructing vast irrigation systems. Yet it all came to naught with a devastating megadrought with no rain for many decades, culminating in the collapse of the Anasazi culture and abandonment of their cliff dwellings by the early 1500s.

Another lesson that it is nature that control’s the Earth’s climate, not us. You’ll find Montezuma’s Castle above Beaver Creek south of Sedona. It’s a marvel not to be missed. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #194 photo ©Jack Wheeler)
