FLASHBACK FRIDAY – THE BLACK MANED LION OF ANGOLA

jw-the-lion-of-angola August, 1983. It was pitch-black dark as I and a couple dozen heavily-armed UNITA guerrillas were rumbling over the roadless Angolan bush in a huge captured Russian truck. Suddenly there was an entire pride of lions running in front of the truck’s headlights. As they scattered, without warning a massive black-maned male jumped in front of us. The driver didn’t have time to swerve – we crashed into him full on, killing him instantly.

The UNITA fellows had me pose with him the next morning – obviously with no rifle as I was not hunting. It was to memorialize a tragic ending to a magnificent animal. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #125 Photo ©Jack Wheeler)

HORSESHOE BEND

horseshoe-bendLooking down 1,000 feet above world-famous Horseshoe Bend of the Colorado River at sunset is one of most iconic views our planet offers us. It is to be found near Page, Arizona near the border with Utah. Yet in truth, the number of different mind-blowing iconic views is uncountable in this part of the American West.

Close by are the Vermillion Cliffs, and the simply psychedelic Antelope Canyon. Just a bit further is the Grand Escalante Staircase, a little bit further Zion and Bryce Canyons and Monument Valley. And of course, right next door is something called The Grand Canyon.

There are people who have explored this region for years and will tell you there’s so much they’ve yet to see. You can explore the world over – what I’ve done my whole life – and yet there is so much of Creation to be soul-thrilled by just in this one region of northern Arizona and southern Utah – and I haven’t mentioned Moab which is a total mind-blow all by itself.

Take a break from all the worries of the world to come to here. Pick a place that will thrill your soul for a few days. That’s what’s needed now. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #134 Photo ©Jack Wheeler)

THE JADE ROAD

the-jade-road

The oldest part of the Silk Road was originally called the Jade Road along the string of oases watered by runoff from the Kunlun mountains of northern Tibet on the southern edge of the Takla Makan desert in Chinese Turkestan. This is where the finest jade was to be found, washed down from Tibet. This is the route that Marco Polo took with his father and uncle in 1272 to reach the court of the Mongol Emperor Kublai Khan.

This is what the Jade Road looks like today, near the fabled oasis of Khotan. Save for the road being asphalted and the farmer’s cart being towed by a small tractor instead of a donkey, Polo would recognize it. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #179 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

THE INSPIRATION OF AMERICA

tt-principles-of-independence-freedom

Next to the entrance of The Red House, the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago in the capital of Port of Spain, there is this marble inscription. It is clear that it is inspired by our 1776 Declaration of Independence and America’s founding principles. Trinidad’s population is 99% either Indian (from India), African, or a mix of the two. 64% are Christian, 21% Hindu, 6% Moslem, others undeclared – and all have these principles as a common bond between them.

Here in the Caribbean’s Trinidad is such a clear example of how America’s founding moral principles are such an inspiration to all humanity, of all cultures, creeds, and ethnicities. They are universal, America’s heritage as a gift to the world. This is the heritage of all Americans – something we need to hold on to and hold dear as we persevere during this current period of our country’s cultural, moral, and political lunacy. WODAABE MEN MUST LOOK BEAUTIFUL TO ATTRACT THE LADIES

wodaabe-men-in-makeup

The Wodaabe are cattle-herding nomads in Niger, West Africa. Their Gerewol festival features Yaake dances by the men to impress marriageable ladies with how ideally handsome they are. Those ideals include being tall and athletic, having white eyes and white teeth, decorating themselves colorfully, and having a winning smile.

The Wodaabe are a fun-loving, friendly, and hospitable people. You’ll meet them on our Trans-Sahara Expedition when we’re next able to operate one. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #57 Photo ©Jack Wheeler)

HALF-FULL REPORT 08/26/22

rosa-delauroOK – fun question: Who is this bag lady?

Amazingly, while looking like a bag lady, she’s the Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, 79 year-old DemFascist Rosa DeLauro, who has been representing the 3rd District of Connecticut since 1991.

That the 3rd CD’s voters have been stupid enough to do this for over 30 years is embarrassing to me, since Milford, the town my 9th g-grandfather Thomas Wheeler founded in 1639 is in her district.  You can’t imagine what he would think today – probably he and his wife Joan would sail back to England.  Oh, well – it’s all the Yale University-New Haven retards that keep electing her.

Right now, Crazy Rosie is pulling out her purple-turquoise hair over Joe Manchin.  You see, Schumer promised Joe all kinds of fossil fuel preferences for West Virginia to get his necessary vote for the Inflation Expansion Act – and now all the Dem hard-lefties are reneging.

Yessiree, gather ‘round folks, the show’s about to begin.  The US Gov’s Fiscal Year goes from Oct 1 to Sep 30, and sure enough, Rosa’s committee has its begging bowl out for another lunatic Continuing Resolution – and if that’s not passed by the Senate and House by 35 days from now, you know what happens.  The dreaded, fearsome, mommy-I’m-scared scary… Shutdown…

HAPPY AUGUST 24TH UKRAINE INDEPENDENCE DAY

And Russian surrender may not be that far off.  When Turkish leader Erdogan publicly demands, as he did today (8/24), that Putin evacuate Crimea and give it back to Ukraine, that is a de facto acknowledgement that Putin has lost and must admit it.

CAN ENOUGH WHISTLE BLOWERS BRING DOWN THE FBI?

corroding-fedsAnother slew of whistleblowers have come forward with misconduct claims against the FBI following the Bureau's raid on former President Donald Trump's Florida estate.

FBI field offices in Miami, Salt Lake City, Buffalo and Newark face accusations that their upper management coerced agents to sign false affidavits, inflated terrorism caseloads to improve their apparent performance, engaged in illicit sexual activities, or concealed those of others.

“The FBI is completely out of control and its culture and structure needs to change. Not only is the political bias completely out of control and disgustingly obvious, the FBI knows they will not be held accountable for their illegal behavior and misconduct,” said one Whistleblower in a letter to Rep. Louis Gohmert (R-Tx) of the House Judiciary Committee.

WHAT CLIMATE CRISIS?

no-climate-sosA new group called Climate Intelligence (Clintel for short) has been founded in the Netherlands with the express purpose of combatting the extremism of the climate change campaigners.

One of their early efforts is a statement, signed by over 1,000 scientists and policy experts from around the world, that argues “There Is No Climate Emergency.”

This link goes to the complete PDF.  It contains the following statement, and the names and positions of, to date, 1,107 scientists from Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China & Hong Kong, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Ecuador, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, and USA.

RUSSIAS DEMOGRAPHIC COLLAPSE IS ACCELERATING

russ-deaths-births-chartMost countries are slowly recovering from the disastrous demographic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Russia is not.

Instead, as new data shows, the Russian Federation has resumed its long-term demographic decline, a trend likely to intensify and profoundly affect not only the country’s self-image but also its prospects for economic recovery and fielding a large military.

The Kremlin is currently casting about for ways to limit or reverse this trend, but financial constraints—many of which arise from President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine and ideological blinders affecting much of the Russian leadership—are preventing Moscow from making real progress, according to independent demographers.

Many Russians see three demographic trends in particular as incredibly threatening.

KEEPING YOUR SANITY BY COMMITTING TO LIFE WITHOUT CRISIS

The Leap of Faith – Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

I’m used to hearing from people in crisis. As a psychotherapist and life coach, it’s part of my business. It may be a crisis in a marriage, a crisis at work, a financial crisis… There are many places for crises to wreak havoc in our lives.

Some crises are unavoidable. We control only so much of what happens in our lives, and sometimes life throws hardship, tragedy, or deeply chaotic circumstances our way. I don’t make light of or gloss over the realities of life; but I do make it my business to help people to avoid unnecessary troubles, and there is one thing that we can do to prevent some of the more predictable crises of life:

Make and hold your positive commitments all the way, without reservation.

Commitment requires a leap of faith.  Like Indy’s Leap of Faith to reach the Grail, we are ordering our future without any assurance of what that future will bring. It asks us to remove the safety harness, forgo the escape hatch, burn the ships that could take us back to our familiar life, and believe that we can handle the risks and the rewards of commitment.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY – CLIMBING MOUNT OLYMPUS

mount-olympus

August, 1971. Here is where the Ancient Greeks believed their 12 Olympian Gods lived, on the summit of the highest peak of Olympus – Mytikas at 9,571ft/2,918m. There are 52 jagged prominences of Olympus, but if you want to commune with Zeus, Apollo, Aphrodite, Athena and the rest, this is where you go.

It takes just two days: morning drive from Athens (4 hrs) to Litochoro, then the roadhead at Priona (2,500ft). Afternoon hike of some 3 hours through pretty pine forests to the comfortable Spilios Agapitos refuge (6,700ft) for dinner and a bunk bed overnight. You’re up at dawn for a strenuous but not technical climb up to Skala peak at 9,400ft. In my photo, you’re looking at Mytikas from Skala. It’s a Class B rock scramble – no ropes or gear, but this shouldn’t be your first mountain rodeo. Be careful!

I was by myself at the Mytikas summit and no selfies in those days, so I said my greetings to the gods, and I was back down at the refuge by lunchtime. You’ll be back at the Plaka below the Acropolis in Athens for ouzo and dinner. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #45 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

THE CAMEL MEAT MARKET IN THE FEZ BAZAAR

camel-meat-market

Sometimes you run across something that no matter how it grosses you out, you have to take a picture of it. The thousand year-old medina or walled city of Fez is a World Heritage Site as the spiritual and cultural capital of Morocco. Uniquely epitomizing this is the stall of the camel butcher in the medina’s vast bazaar. To garner the attention of ladies shopping for their family’s dinner, he proudly displays the head of the camel whose fresh meat is on sale. Traveling in Morocco is always an adventure.
