ABOLISH THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY

Secretary of Energy-designate Rick Perry
Secretary of Energy-designate Rick Perry

When former Texas governor Rick Perry ran for president in 2012, he promised he'd abolish the U.S. Department of Energy (at least when he could remember it). Liberals wrote this off as typical conservative stupidity.

Why would anyone want to abolish the DOE? According to one liberal commentator, it was because the department "was established during Jimmy Carter's administration and it perhaps sounds like it might have something to do with solar panels."

Jimmy Carter created it, all right, but solar panels were only a symptom of the real problem. The DOE was conceived in dark and pessimistic beliefs and forecasts that have proven totally wrong. As Obama might say, the DOE is on the wrong side of history.

Thanks to the DOE, we've endured wasteful, panicked policies such as massive subsidies for the wind and solar power, and electric cars.  Worst of all, Congress has saddled consumers with ethanol subsidies and mandates.

These boondoggles cost us billions of dollars, and none of them are commercially viable in their own right.  The DOE isn’t viable either.  It’s time to get rid of it.

HOW 2017 CAN BE A YEAR OF MORE PROSPERITY AND MORE LIBERTY

2017-goalsThe good news for 2017 is we can have 4 percent or higher real economic growth per year over the next few years — and here is how.

Some of the critics of President-elect Trump have insisted that the approximately two-percent annual average GDP growth the U.S. has experienced over the last seven years is the “new normal,” and we just need to get used to it.

It has led to stagnant incomes and tens of millions of involuntarily unemployed or underemployed workers. The present slow-growth path is also unsustainable, with ever-rising debt levels of a share of GDP which will eventually lead to a financial collapse.

Most people, including many economists, cannot imagine the huge gains in productivity that can arise from an increase in incentives and unseen innovations.

Fortunately, getting America back on the high-growth track only involves things that we know how to do and have done at times in the last four decades. Specifically:

THE FIRST DAY OF CHRISTMAS IS TODAY

partridge-in-a-pear-treeI hope you had the Merriest of Christmases yesterday, Sunday December 25, but according to the song, the First Day of Christmas is the day after Christmas, December 26.  That’s today.

Ancient Christians celebrated Christmas starting with the day after the birth of Jesus and ending on January 6th with the visit of the Magi in Matthew 2:11 known as the Epiphany.

Start with 12/26 and end with 1/6 and you get: the Twelve Days of Christmas.

No doubt you’re really tired of hearing Christmas songs by now, including this one, yet you may still be wondering what the heck partridges in a pear tree and eight maids a-milking have to do with the birth of the founder of Christianity.

So I thought it might be entertaining, as we recover from all the festivities, to take a look at the song’s origin, meaning, and myth.

First published in London in 1790, it was a "memory and forfeits" game played by children in the form of a song, where the leader recites a verse, each player in turn repeats it, the leader keeps adding verses until a player’s memory fails him/her and has to forfeit a piece of candy.

Even though The Twelve Days of Christmas was a kids’ song-game, it nonetheless had a deep religious meaning. Unlike the PC Happy Holidays of today, centuries ago Christmas was above all a religious celebration. All of the song’s twelve gifts are Christian symbols.

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me

HALF-FULL REPORT 12/23/16

trump-xmas-msgMerry Christmas!  The days of “Happy Holidays” are over, as is the whole multi-culti libtard diversity Orwellian con game.  America is having a Merry Christmas – and if the hopeless losers of November 8 can’t, it’s not possible for us to be less concerned.

The picture and its message you see above is funny, right?  Actually, it’s much more than that.

Recall the days of yesteryear, when in 2008 it was absurdly ridiculous for Americans to consider electing a president with absolutely no qualifications whatever, so hardline Leftist he approved his Communist preacher praying for God to damn America, so mysterious he didn’t even have a valid birth certificate, simply because of the color of his skin.

Yet he was elected anyway as no criticism mattered, if you dared criticize him you were a racist.  Once in the Oval Office, he initiated the most scandal-ridden presidency in US history – and none of that mattered as well.  He proceeded to “fundamentally transform” our country straight into a cultural cesspool.  Any objection to him and his policies was proof you were a racist bigoted homophobe, something irredeemably deplorable.

Big time Bad Karma.  Which brings us to something called the Overton Window.  A seismic shift is happening more important than a mere election.  Read on – this HFR will give you a revelatory perspective on the world.

A SUDDEN OPPORTUNITY IN EGYPT

Sarcophagus of King Tut. Photo by Jack Wheeler

This is sudden, as an extraordinary opportunity has just emerged.

The world’s most courageous leader today is Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.  Egypt, the largest and most important Arab country, had been taken over by the Islamofascists of the Moslem Brotherhood, Iqwan Muslimi.  Obama was on their side and supporting them.

Al-Sisi, as commanding general of the Egyptian military, had the incredible cojones to stand up to both Zero and Iqwan, and swept them aside.  He was then elected president in the first actually free and fair election Egypt has ever had in its 5,000-year history.

A dear friend of mine has over the years developed a close personal friendship with Sisi, ever since he was a lowly colonel.  That friend is a United States Congressman who, in early January is leading a CODEL (Congressional Delegation) to Cairo to meet President Sisi in the Heliopolis Presidential Palace.

He has asked me to lead a parallel delegation from the Freedom Research Foundation, which I founded in 1984, composed of people interested in exploring the extraordinary business opportunities President Sisi is supporting in Egypt today.

MY FIVE DAYS WITH REX TILLERSON

rex-tillersonNine years ago, I showed up to the Denton County Courthouse in Denton, Texas for jury duty and got myself picked for the job. A young girl had accused her mom’s boyfriend of sexual assault and the case was being brought to trial.

If you’ve ever served on a jury trial before, you understand the almost immediate, yet very temporary bond that ties 12 strangers together who are randomly chosen from each of their private lives in order to fulfill a very solemn public purpose.

One of our first tasks was to choose our jury foreman. Perhaps it was his business suit, his impressive stature, or his charisma, but almost everyone in that jury room suggested that this middle-aged man with greying hair was likely the most fit for the task.

“Thanks, but I decline. I’m not interested in the spotlight,” he told us. I didn’t think anything of it.

I had just bought my first BlackBerry and used my breaks to catch up on all the emails I was missing from my week at the courthouse. I recall leaving the jury room on a break with this man and remarking how busy I was and how much work I had to do. He smiled as he sat and read the paper.

IS THE DEMOCRAT PARTY IN ITS DEATH THROES?

seal-of-dem-partySo this is how it ends — in a whimper wrapped in self-pity and recriminations.

With President Obama on the defensive at his final press conference, Hillary Clinton’s last campaign event resembling a wake, and Electoral College protests ending in total failure and farce, the Democrat Party is limping off the stage and into the political winter.

It was supposed to sit atop the national power pyramid for decades, a new paradigm of liberals, progressives, the young, the old, the unions and blacks, Latinos, Muslims and Asians.

The torch would be passed from Obama to Clinton, a liberal Supreme Court would vastly expand executive power and the regulatory state would enforce climate-change orthodoxy on all industry and elitist dictates on every American. Globalism would be the new patriotism.

But a funny thing happened on the way to one-party dominance: The people who work for a living said no, hell no. Their revolt brings Donald Trump to the White House amid hopes of a revival of the economy and of the American spirit.

Thoroughly beaten, the Dems are at their lowest point in nearly a century. From the White House to Congress to statehouses, they are on the outside looking in.  Are we witnessing their death throes as an organized political party?

THE COLLAPSE OF THE EU EMPIRE

abandon-shipThe Italian referendum and close-shave Austrian election are symptoms of a continent that may be teetering on the brink of political disintegration.

It’s just possible that an empire may be collapsing before our eyes, as the Habsburg and Ottoman empires did before it, in or around the same neighborhood.

With the rise of nationalist parties in Italy, Austria, Hungary, Poland, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Britain, the possibility that the Brussels union has fomented, rather than suppressed, nationalism can no longer be dismissed.  The European Union may be encouraging precisely what it was founded to avert.

Against this background, it is worth recalling that the leading theory among economic historians for why Europe after 1400 became the wealthiest and most innovative continent is political fragmentation.

Precisely because it was not unified, Europe became a laboratory for different ways of governing, enabling the discovery of regimes that allowed free markets and invention to flourish, first in northern Italy and some parts of Germany, then the low countries, then Britain.

By contrast, China’s unity under one ruler prevented such experimentation.  Just what the mandarins of the EU are doing now.

THE NEXT CHINESE BOOM HAS COME AND GONE

chinese-boomAs the Dow flirts with Trumpian heights of 20,000 on Wall Street, the Shanghai Composite in China has been drifting down for seven consecutive weeks.

It is hard to construct a case that reconciles this split, given the tightly intertwined nature of the world's financial system and the trans-Pacific symbiosis that we call Chimerica. One of these two markets must reverse.

If you are waiting for the next Chinese boom, you have already missed it. The latest 18-month mini-cycle has peaked. The authorities are being forced to tighten. China's $9 trillion bond market is seizing up.

Forty companies have had to cancel or postpone bond issuance this month. Nomura says 24 large firms are in default negotiations, ranging from steel and construction to shipbuilding, chemicals, textiles, and solar.

Beijing let it rip earlier this year with a fiscal deficit of 4% of GDP - a one-off loosening of two to three percentage points that you would expect only in an emergency - and it deliberately stoked a housing bubble in the cities of the Eastern seaboard.

The stimulus was comparable in scale China's post-Lehman blitz, but the effects have been far less because the efficiency of credit has collapsed.  It now takes four yuan of loans to generate one yuan of growth. Since there has been almost no underlying reform, this has merely bought time at the cost of greater imbalances.

WHO REALLY HACKED THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

who-hacked-electionsThe FBI was able to track the DNC hack to an IP address located somewhere close to the North Pole, but sources close to the investigation said the trail had grown cold.

"As soon as special agents were close to apprehending the suspect, they unexpectedly left the area," one source confirmed. "They suddenly grew very eager to spend Christmas vacations with their families."

All we know about the "North Pole Hacker" at this time is that he has an uncanny ability to monitor even the most secret communications in order to compile his annual "naughty or nice" list, which he then cross-references - twice - with corroborative data from other sources.

"The suspect, who goes by the initials SC, usually keeps his list to himself," the FBI source said, "but this was an unprecedented year in many ways." It appears that this year the North Pole Hacker broke with his tradition and posted his "naughty or nice" findings on WikiLeaks, allegedly "so that Americans can get a good president for Christmas."

We will keep you informed as this case develops.

HALF-FULL REPORT 12/16/16

shellshock-hillaryIsn’t this just the nicest picture of Hillary you’ve ever seen?  She’s still in total shellshock arriving at the party she held for her donors at The Plaza hotel last night (12/15).

Today it was announced that FBI Director James Comey has declared there is no evidence Russians hacked the US election.

Comey noted that Director of National Intelligence James Clapper agreed with the FBI’s assessment, while the only intelligence official pushing the Russian Hack Fake News story was the CIA’s John Brennan, who, Comey said, “takes his marching orders from President Obama.”  Ouch.

In response, Bitter John Podesta wrote a screed in the WaPo this morning (12/16) about the FBI being broken.  Maybe, John, but you and Hillary and every other Dem losing schmuck in the country are still residing along that river in Egypt.  You can stay there and stew in your bile for as long as you want.

Meanwhile, 72 hours from now, Donald J. Trump will officially and legally be President-elect of the United States.  This Watermelon Recount Russian Hack Fake News CIA Attempted Coup d’état Farce will be over.  Flipping Electors is a Dem hallucination.

TRUMPING PUTIN

trump-putinLet’s make this clear at the outset:  The world’s most powerful man isn’t.

Yesterday (12/14), Forbes Magazine issued its list of “The World’s Most Powerful People 2016.”  74 names are listed, one for every 100 million of the world’s 7.4 billion.  It’s fun to see Zero plummeting to #48, Chuckie Schumer dead last at #74, and Hillary not on the list at all.

But it’s a Forbes Farce to claim Vlad Putin is #1.  It’s like claiming the naked emperor really has some clothes on.  Putin has been pulling off the world’s greatest bluff for years now – 2016 is the fourth year in a row he’s been Forbes’ Numero Uno.

It’s like all those ubiquitous pictures of a bare-chested big-muscled Putin riding horses and killing tigers – when the guy is five-foot-six, and I know from personal experience not that strong.  It’s like all those giant statues of Lenin everywhere in the days Russia was the Soviet Union, when Lenin was actually five-foot-one.

The notion that Trump will be Putin’s puppet is ludicrous.  It’s the other way around.  Trump the consummate deal-maker knows how to smoke out a bluff better than anyone.

That said, there’s no doubt that Putin will not instantly fold with Trump, but will continue bluffing until Trump calls his hand.

I believe Trump will call for cards and soon.  Here are two tests for my prediction.

TRUMP AND HEZBOLLAH-IRAN

Ayatollah Khomenei and Hassan Nasrallah
Ayatollah Khomenei and Hassan Nasrallah with the Hezbollah flag in Lebanon

Jerusalem. Israeli officials are thrilled with the national security team that US President-elect Donald Trump is assembling. And they are right to be. The question now is how Israel should respond to the opportunity they present us with.

The one issue that brings together all of the top officials Trump has named so far to his national security team is Iran.

During his video address before the Saban Forum (12/04), Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that he looks forward to discussing Obama’s nuclear deal with the Iranian regime with Trump after his inauguration next month.

Given that Netanyahu views Iran’s nuclear program — which the nuclear deal guaranteed would be operational in 14 years at most — as the most serious strategic threat facing Israel, it makes sense that he wishes to discuss the issue first.

But Netanyahu may be better advised to first address the conventional threat Iran poses to Israel, the US and the rest of the region in the aftermath of the nuclear deal.

There are two reasons to start with Iran’s conventional threat, rather than its nuclear program.

IS CHINA POWERLESS AGAINST TRUMP?

trump-smilingOn Fox News Sunday (12/11), with a single incendiary comment on Taiwanese independence, US president-elect Donald Trump has abrogated a central tenet of US foreign policy for the last 37 years and seems to have picked a deliberate fight with China.

Mr. Trump’s language ereyesterday was explicit: “I fully understand the ‘One China policy, but don’t know why we have to be bound by a One China policy unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade.”  This is a bombshell.

The world’s two superpowers are now heading for a showdown on a neuralgic strategic issue, greatly raising the risk of a trade war and a fundamental breakdown of the global commercial system.

However…there is little that Beijing can do to damage the US without hurting itself far more.  China’s financial options are limited. Veiled threats to detonate a US debt crisis by selling Beijing’s $1.157 trillion of US Treasury bonds, to take just one example, are mere bluster.

So what can China do regarding the wily presidential deal-maker?
