IDENTITY THEFT: “PHISHING” FOR VICTIMS

Identity theft is prevalent in the news now. The thieves use Spyware: worms to monitor keystrokes and steal passwords. They’ve advanced way beyond the old fashioned ways, like searching your dumpster looking for discarded receipts.

Now they’ve become more brazen than ever, using “phishing,” or emails pretending to come from a known and trusted source. Some of their messages are so silly, that victims who fall for them can only be called willing, given all the publicity about security and identity theft that wafts through the airwaves daily.

RUSSIA’S LOOMING NIGHTMARE

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum is the annual showpiece of Vladimir Putin, who began his political career as deputy mayor of St Petersburg.

In its opening session today (5/22), the most senior Western politician attending told Russia's leaders in the bluntest terms that their country will be frozen out of the global financial system and face slow economic breakdown unless the Kremlin steps back from confrontation with the West.

Peter Mandelson, Member of the British House of Lords, former Deputy Prime Minister and EU Trade Commissioner, informed them:

"A sense of Russia-risk is crystallizing around the events in Ukraine. The great danger is that this negative sentiment will set in concrete around Russia.  It is the markets that are leading the way, not governments, and they are quickening the pace. This is the looming nightmare for the Russian economy and it will have to be dealt with very boldly by the Russian government. To be cut off from global capital markets is not a good idea."

HALF-FULL REPORT 12/06/13

Christmas is less than three weeks away, and the HFR is here with the solution for what presents to get for your friends and loved ones.

What could be better than 50% off on a Gift Yearly Subscription to To The Point?  Yes, from now until New Year's (01/01) you can give anyone you know the enlightenment of To The Point for an entire year at half-off.  How can you beat that?  You'll be thanked for it every week from now to next December.

And, if you want something gift-wrapped under the Christmas Tree, give them a copy of The Jade Steps:  The Story of the Liberation of Mexico by One of History's Most Heroic Women - by, ahem, yours truly.

America gave itself a huge Christmas present this week: the Gallup poll released yesterday (12/05) on Zero's job approval.  Study it carefully, it will blow you away.

Gallup headlines the 23% drop in Hispanic support, from 75 to 52%, which is an eye-opener especially given his desperate pandering to Hispanic illegals.   But he's down by double digits across the board - nonwhites, unmarrieds, all age and income groups, churched or unchurched, men or women.

So it's not just the young ‘uns who've soured on Zero, it's most everyone.  An there's good news elsewhere, including an astounding discovery regarding the world's most vital resource -- water.

WANT LOWER PRICES? SLASH THE BUDGET OF THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT!

Why does the Obama administration claim it wants you to pay less for your airline ticket, but more for the shrimp you buy?  One reason the economy keeps stumbling along is that businessmen, consumers and taxpayers are having a hard time planning because of endlessly inconsistent and often lawless policy directives from the Obama White House.

On the same day last week, the administration announced that it was seeking to block the proposed American Airlines-US Airways merger, allegedly to protect consumers against higher prices - and that it might impose higher duties (taxes) on shrimp from foreign competitors to protect U.S. shrimpers, meaning that all who eat shrimp will have to pay more.

The Justice Department, under the leadership of ethically and intellectually challenged Eric H. Holder Jr., came up with a study that concluded that airline ticket prices would be higher and service worse if American Airlines and US Airways merged. The conclusion was immediately challenged by affected parties (the companies and the unions) and many transportation economists.

I do not know, as a frequent flier, whether I will be better or worse off with the proposed merger. I do know, however, that the folks at the Justice Department also do not know - but trying to block the merger massages their egos and their lust for power.

THE INSANITY OF AMNESTY AT ALL COSTS

Just like they did with Obamacare, some in Congress intend to "Pelosi" the amnesty bill. They'll pass it in order to find out what's in it.

And just like the unpopular, unaffordable Obamacare disaster, this pandering, rewarding-the-rule-breakers, still-no-border-security, special-interests-ridden, 24-lb disaster of a bill is not supported by informed Americans.

I am an ardent supporter of legal immigration. I'm proud that our country is so desirable that it has been a melting pot making a diverse people united as the most exceptional nation on earth for over two centuries. But I join every American with an ounce of common sense insisting that any discussion about immigration must center on a secure border.

The amnesty bill before the Senate is completely toothless on border security.

If this bill was genuinely concerned with border security, it might include practical solutions for those states that live with the problem every single day. Pass-through grants could be given to border states to actually build a fence.  Free up more federal lands along the border to be privatized.

There are plenty of other commonsense solutions, but this bill isn't about fixing problems; it's about amnesty at all costs.  What's more, passing this bill with an unsecured border and within a growing welfare state under Barack Obama is economic insanity.

AMERICAN SEPPUKU

I'm in an airport in Europe waiting to fly back to a country that is no longer mine.  It's 9am here, 3am in the East Coast, and Romney has conceded.  I'll be all day getting back, so I thought I'd put down a few words before boarding time.

The science-fiction writer Robert Heinlein once wrote a book entitled Stranger In A Strange Land.  I'm that stranger now, America is that strange land.

A majority of my fellow Americans performed seppuku yesterday, plunging the tonto ceremonial short blade into their country's abdomen and disemboweled it.  America died yesterday, right before our eyes.  Right now I am incapable of understanding or explaining how this could possibly happen.

I went to bed last night sure I would be flying off to a joyous celebration at our Rendezvous, where we would plan together the rebirth of American freedom.  I woke up to my horror realizing that I'm headed to a funeral instead.

Yet that funeral for our country, as heartbreaking as that is, must not be our funeral.  The most important thing we must do at this moment is commit to survive - for ourselves, our families, for our loved ones.

We are facing a national and historic tragedy of monstrous proportions.  But we must not let it be our personal tragedy. So rather than our Rendezvous in Washington this weekend be, as we hoped, Preparing for the Nobama Future, it will now be Surviving the Obama Future.

We have to face the reality of what has happened, and figure out how to personally triumph over it.  This must be our first priority.  Only then can we even begin to figure out how to rescue our country.  It's like the airline flight attendant telling you, in an emergency, to place the oxygen mask over yourself first, and then over your child.

It's at a time like this that I most clearly remember sitting on my grandfather's knee as a young boy and him telling me the Wheeler Family Motto.  I suggest that it be the TTP Motto today:

There is a solution to every problem
The sun will shine after every storm
The soul's highest purpose is to be of good cheer.

I'm on my way to the Rendezvous - and I hope you will be too.

THE ARCTIC OCEAN PIE

While chilling here in Sumatra (see Sumatra Sunrise) after writing an exposition of one entire ocean (the Indian:  see The French Ocean), I never thought I'd soon be writing about another, and one so far away.

Yet the Russians' stunt of planting their flag on the bottom of the Arctic Ocean at the North Pole is such a dangerous joke that I'm compelled to do so.  The joke is on the Russians, for there already is an American flag planted there.

Evidently, the six Ruskie explorers in their Mir mini-subs didn't look around very much when they reached the sea floor at 14,000 feet down.  If they had, they would have seen the stars and stripes - or at least what it's encased in.

It's quite a story of how that American flag got there.  And it provides quite an opportunity to create an Arctic Ocean Pie - one that the UN doesn't get a slice of.

IT’S SINATRA TIME

Yes, it's Sinatra Time - meaning, recall FS's lyrics in That's Life, take a while to feel like garbage over Americans electing people who hate their country to run Capitol Hill, then pick yourself up and get back in the race.

Yes, this is not going to be easy.  I lived through the old joke this morning - waking up at dawn to survey the wreckage of yesterday, telling myself to cheer up as things could be worse.  So I cheered up and sure enough, things got disastrously worse when Bush threw Rummy to the wolves of the left - and announced the worst possible replacement.

Bobby Gates' nickname at the CIA was The Little Prick.  He is a pompous, incompetent, squishy witless fool.  He is the total tool of the Jimmy Baker-Brent Scowcroft crowd that so horribly ran foreign affairs for GW's daddy.  To put such a man in charge of the Pentagon - the one bastion of pro-Americanism remaining in our foreign policy establishment - is an unmitigated catastrophe.

Conservatives can get back in the race by blocking this awful nomination.  They did it with Harriet Miers, it can be done with Little Bobby.

FOR LIBERALS, IT’S NEVER TERRORISM IF AMERICA IS ATTACKED

Ever so often, the America-hating depravity of liberals is exposed with breathtaking clarity.  Normally, they try to hide their embarrassment at being an American.  Or they'll get angrily defensive.  "Are you questioning my patriotism?" they'll intimidatingly ask.  To which the answer is:  "I would if you had any patriotism to question."

They fudge and smudge over the fact that they are always on the side of America's enemies.  They always blame America for any problem in the world, and root for America to lose in any conflict.

What they hide best is their secret admiration for Osama Bin Laden.  They know how many Americans would like to tar and feather them if they admitted they were thrilled that a guy in a beard and turban living in an Afghan cave destroyed the world's tallest buildings in America's greatest city, killed thousands on American soil, and humbled the Great Superpower in the eyes of the world.

So liberals keep this to themselves.  Once in a while, though, one of them exposes himself and reveals the ugliness of his soul.

Like a fellow named Richard Marshall did in an email to me this week.

THE IRANIAN FOUNT OF TERRORISM

The war in the Middle East — for it is a regional war, not merely a battle for Iraq — cannot be analyzed at the level of the individual terrorist groups, because the terrorists are part of a larger context. The organizing center is, as Spanish Magistrate Balthazar Garzon publicly put it, a "directorate" located in Iran, that works closely with Iranian intelligence organizations, including the Revolutinary Guards. Those organizations, in turn, work with their counterparts in other friendly countries.

A NEW SPY SWEEPER, NEW INTRUDER TRICKS, AND MORE

Spy Sweeper 3.0 has been released. And it’s quite an upgrade from version 2.6, the version I recommended.

Also, I’d like to discuss a different threat. There’s a technique by which a malicious hacker can hijack web sites and insert ads or other features that appear daily. Thus you need to think twice between you click on any ad.

HOW ANTI-ISRAEL IS THE POPE?

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman were right when they blamed the noxious anti-Israel incitement rampant in Europe for Saturday's (5/24) murderous shooting attack at the Jewish Museum in Brussels and the assault and battery of two Jewish brothers outside their synagogue in a Paris suburb later that day.

Anti-Israel incitement is ubiquitous in Europe and is appearing in ever-widening circles of the Western world as a whole.

Until this week, the Catholic Church stayed out of the campaign to dehumanize Jews and malign the Jewish state.

Pope Benedict XVI was perceived as a friend of Israel, despite his childhood membership in the Hitler Youth. His opposition to Islam's rejection of reason, eloquently expressed at his speech at the University of Regensburg in 2006, positioned him as a religious champion of reason, individual responsibility and law - Judaism's primary contributions to humanity.

His predecessor Pope John Paul II was less willing to confront Islamic violence. But his opposition to Communism made him respect Israel as freedom's outpost in the Middle East. John Paul's visit to Israel in 2000 was in some ways a historic gesture of friendship to the Jewish people of Israel.

Alas, the Golden Age of Catholic-Jewish relations seems to have come to an end during Francis's visit to the Promised Land this week.

HALF-FULL REPORT 11/29/13

Well, so much for Papal Infallibility.

Jorge Bergoglio spent his 77 years devoted to his religion, which is a fine thing, but in so doing he learned nothing about how business and capitalism actually works - living his life until recently in autocratic anti-capitalist Peronist Argentina.

Last March, he was elevated to the papacy.  This week (11/26), as Pope Francis I, he chose to issue an Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, that very unfortunately contained a collection of thoughtless socialist bromides condemning capitalist "greed" and "inequality."  The Global Enemedia had a field day.  "Pope Francis' Stinging Critique of Capitalism" was the WaPo's celebratory headline.

As the IBD explains, it is incredibly ignorant to argue that the free market is a "new tyranny... that rules instead of serves." Rush thinks "it's sad because this pope makes it very clear he doesn't know what he's talking about."

Instead of reciting memorized Marxist slogans of his teachers in Buenos Aires, he could have thought for himself and identified just what is the most powerful institution of greed in the world, composed of the greediest and most selfishly profligate people on the planet who demand to live like royalty and treat those who support them like slaves....

....A Marxist Pope makes the world a more dangerous place.  And there was a lot more bad news creating a lot more danger this week as well.

....But is there any good news around here?  Yes!  Here's the question.  What do Dennis Rodman, Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber, Miley Cyrus, and Anthony Weiner have in common with Zero?

ENDLESS EXCUSES FOR MORE RUINOUS REGULATION

Terrorists, money launderers, drug dealers and tax evaders use automobiles, airplanes, telephones, computers, banks and countless other goods and services that we all use. Yet all too many government policymakers think that if we make these things very difficult to use, the bad guys will go away -- forgetting, of course, that all the rest of us suffer from mindless regulation and control.

Banks and other financial service firms have become the targets of choice for the unthinking government class and its allies -- because in popular culture, bankers are often cast as the evil villains, despite the fact that the world economy could not function without them.

Thirty years ago, the excuse for more financial services' regulation was that "drug dealers" used banks. That argument morphed into "banks facilitate money laundering," which was made a crime in the United States in 1986.

Then after Sept. 11, 2001, that excuse evolved into "terrorists use banks." More recently, the justification for more rules has become "banks around the world enable businesses and individuals to avoid taxes." There are always new excuses for more regulation -- but the demands remain the same:

WHY I AM A REPUBLICAN

Note:  Elbert Guillory is a State Senator in the legislature of Louisiana.  A graduate of Rutgers Law School, he has been a practicing attorney in Opelousas for many years, and turned to politics in his 60s - elected as a State Representative in 2007, then State Senator in 2009 as a Democrat.  Opelousas is heavily black and Democrat.

On May 31, he formally switched his party affiliation to the Republican Party, becoming the first black Republican in the Louisiana Senate since Reconstruction in the 1870s.  He is widely considered now to be a formidable candidate for Lt. Governor in 2015.

Guillory calls himself a "Frederick Douglass Republican."  Here is his explanation.  It brought tears to my eyes, and it may well to yours.  - Jack Wheeler
