COALITION OF EVIL

The Al Qaeda watchers have a new chant: They tell us that the once-centralized terror organization is now largely decentralized, and that the separate cells have a great deal of autonomy. Osama bin Laden may still provide the ideology, but the locals do their own planning and operations.

Thus, the Washington Post found that the expert consensus on the London attacks was that, yes, these people might be linked to al Qaeda in a broad, political/religious/ideological way, but the operation itself, like many in the recent past (Madrid or London, for example), was a local product.

The insistence that “Al Qaeda” — defined as the main enemy — is highly decentralized has a lethal effect on designing an effective antiterrorist policy, for it reinforces the strategic paralysis that currently afflicts this administration.

If we conceive the war against the terrorists as a long series of discrete engagements against separate groups in many countries, we will likely fail, beginning with Iraq.

RUSSIA LOSES ANOTHER ONE

A friend of mine whose name you know but is embarrassed to have his name mentioned and I will never forget standing on a street corner in Kishinev, Moldavia. We stood there looking like fools trying to keep our jaws from dropping open and our necks from snapping back and forth - for everywhere we looked, we saw another stunningly beautiful woman walk by. Between the two of us, we had been to just about every country in Europe, and we agreed: the most beautiful women on the European continent were right here. Kishinev left Paris in the dust.

That was back in 1990, and the place was still part of the Soviet Union. During World War II, Stalin decided to move the USSR-Romania border westward, from the Dniester River to the Prut River, and called the territory he had seized the Soviet Socialist Republic of Moldavia. The smallest of the USSR’s 15 republics (at 13,000 square miles, slightly larger than Maryland), it along with the others declared independence in 1991, changing its name to Moldova and its capital to Chisinau. Except there was this one little problem.

OBAMA’S BACKDOOR GUN CONTROL

I am one who steers very clear of tinfoil hat conspiracy theories. I often believe liberals/progressives plant stories in order to distract and disrupt, enabling them to pursue their true goals and objectives. That's why I stress the importance of staying focused on the modern liberal socialist policies of the Obama administration, not the sideshow antics.

However, as a former combat commander, I have been trained to look for trends. And I believe we've found a very disturbing one. it seems that back door gun control is in full effect in the United States. Why? Thanks to Obama's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), we can no longer smelt lead from ore in the United States.

What this all means is that after December 2013, any ammunition that will be available to US citizens will have to be imported, which will surely increase the price and possibly come under government control.  Welcome to Obama's backdoor gun control.

HALF-FULL REPORT 05/31/13

Don't you think it's high time to point out the undiluted racism of the Zero Presidency and its supporters?

Racism is, of course, what got Zero nominated and elected to begin with, back in 2008.  No one, certainly no Democrat or Libtard journalist, would have paid any attention whatever to a freshman Senator with exactly his résumé if he were just another white guy.

But let's now ask, do you think that, on Monday (5/27) the leader of the Democrat Party in Louisiana, Karen Carter Peterson, would have denounced opponents of Obamacare as racists - "it's about race; it's about the race of this African-American president" - if she weren't black herself?

Do you think that, yesterday (5/30) on MSNBC, sociology professor Michael Eric Dyson would have defended Eric Holder as "the Moses of our time," if he weren't black himself?  (Funny, though, I never knew that Moses was black or that Holder was Jewish.)

While Peterson and Dyson were heavily criticized for their statements, no one had the nerve to criticize them for being racially motivated.  It's about time they were... don't you think?

Meanwhile, as last week's HFR noted, Eric Holder is toast.  This week he's melba toast.

TALE OF TWO ECONOMIC STYLES

Will 2013 be a better year? A number of economic commentators have been saying the worst is behind us. I think they are wrong, and here is why. In most major countries, including the United States, government is growing faster than the private sector.

As Mitchell's Golden Rule explains, when the private sector grows faster than government, prosperity increases, and when government grows faster than the private sector, misery increases.

As can be seen in the accompanying table, in most of the major nations, debt-to-GDP ratios are increasing, because the deficits as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) are greater than economic growth -- meaning these countries are getting deeper in the hole each year.  The US is one of them.

IT’S NOT THE DECLARATION OF DEPENDENCE

As we celebrate our nation's birthday this week, it is important to remember and teach our children the Founding Fathers were declaring our independence, not creating a culture of dependence. This is an especially important lesson, given the Supreme Court's ruling last week on Obamacare.

The Readers Digest version of the Supreme Court's decisions last week is this - The Government can require proof of insurance, but not proof of citizenship.

Here is the big picture situation in America today. Success used to be measured by how many people we could get off the government dole, but now, under President Obama, we measure success by how many people we can get on government programs.

We have it 100 percent backwards in America today. We should celebrate people getting off food stamps, off Medicaid, and off government health care.

We are at an inflection point in our nation's history. We have to decide whether we want to revive our economy by growing the private sector or expanding the public sector, to continue our culture of self-reliance versus a culture of dependency, to provide our children with opportunity or a sense of entitlement, and to pursue the American model or give in to the European model.

I have vowed not to implement Obamacare in Louisiana, especially creating the exchange and expanding Medicaid, because this November we're going to elect a new President and a new Congress who will repeal and replace the terrible law.

IS OBAMA ON PUTIN’S PAYROLL?

Just like the Saudis, the KGB has journalists all over the world on their payroll.  There's hardly a major newspaper or newsmagazine in Europe, for example, that doesn't have one or more of their prominent writers and editors being paid on the sly by the Saudis to say nice things about them and nothing critical.

It's not quite as extensive throughout the US media, but you'd be surprised what US pundits and media stars are on the Saudi take.  The Saudis particularly like to see if they can rope in one of them on the right.  Well-known conservative columnist and television commentator Robert Novak (1931-2009) was one of their prize catches.  For years they paid him a fortune to be pro-Palestinian/anti-Israel.

The KGB - since 1991, it was supposedly renamed and divided up into the FSB (Federal Security Service internal to Russia) and the SVR (Foreign Intelligence Service), but it's still the same outfit of Russian thugs - does the same, and a lot more.

FEAR OF FLU

One more calamity to freak out about now, it seems, is an impending “pandemic” of the Asian Bird Flu virus known as H5N1.  Every day we read about five billion more chickens or turkeys or geese in China or Romania or some other country being infected and killed.

A batch of folks in Vietnam have died of it, and the scare stories mount about how any day now, the virus will mutate, enabling not just bird-to-human infection but human-to-human.  Then, the stories claim, the pandemic is on.

There are some protective measures you might consider to shield yourself from a H5N1 pandemic should it occur.  I don’t want to be dispensing medical advice, so I’ll just say that this is what I am doing myself.

HOW TO DUAL BOOT XP AND LINUX ON THE SAME HARD DISK

This step by step guide is meant to show you how to install Linux (Fedora Core 2) on one hard drive, on top of an existing Windows machine, and using native boot loaders for each OS (i.e. the ntloader for Windows), grub for booting Linux.

This 21 step guide details each step necessary to perform the a dual boot of Windows XP and Linux, and uses the QtParted tool in the SystemRescueCD to resize NTFS (QtParted is a free tool for resizing NTFS partitions).

The steps in this guide do not originate with me. I’ve pieced them together from XP and other programmers’ forums. But this is the first time it’s all been put together in one place.

EVIL WITHIN

That the London killers were native Brits surprised a lot of people, which is testimony to our capacity to forget our own history. The 7/7 terrorists were neither the first British terrorists (take Richard Reid, the "shoe bomber," for example), nor the first terrorists born and bred in a Western democracy.

It is quite easy to compile a long list of native American, British, French, German, Spanish, and Italian terrorists — suicide and otherwise. Mohammed Bouyari, the assassin of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, was born and bred in the Netherlands.

These facts were known, but got relegated to that part of the spirit that shelters active thought from unpleasant truths. The knowledge that our societies contain people ready to kill us had not penetrated the awareness of the British people, and, with them, countless Europeans and Americans.

BLAME-AMERICA-FIRST CONSERVATIVES

It was Jeane Kirkpatrick at the 1984 Republican Convention in Dallas who identified the Liberal Democrat compulsion to “blame America first.” In any confrontation between America and any other country or disaffected group, liberals could be trusted to say it was their own country’s fault.

This compulsion seems to be a defining characteristic of liberals to this day, from Baghdad Jim McDermott (D-WA) to Dick Turban Durbin (D-IL) to Howard Dean and Teddy Kennedy. What’s not widely recognized is how this compulsion has infected the brains of certain conservatives.

A case in point is how Pat Buchanan and his American Conservative magazine are swooning, along with the New York Times and the Liberal Media, over a new book - Dying to Win -- by a goofy University of Chicago professor named Robert Pape.

RATHER DISTORTED

I write this with a Reidel glass of Rosemount Merlot at the ready, toasting the forced departure of an individual who has infested America’s airwaves for 43 years - ever since he joined CBS News in 1962. I won’t be watching Dan Rather’s final broadcast this evening, just as I haven’t watched CBS News for many years. I’ll merely sip my merlot in gratitude for all those bloggers who exposed Rather’s Memogate and did him in. And my friend Brent Bozell.

RUSSIA RECOLONIZES UKRAINE

"Ukraine in Turmoil," was the headline yesterday (11/26) in the New York Times.  And no wonder.

Twenty years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine is slipping back under Kremlin control, and Ukrainians are deeply angry. Their governments's shock decision to opt for Vladimir Putin's Russia and pull out of EU talks on the eve of a historic deal is a dramatic upset to their freedom - and to the European balance of power.

It is the first major defeat for the EU in its eastward march since the fall of Communism. While the region's geopolitics remain fluid, the upset may prove as fateful as the signing of the Treaty of Pereyaslav in 1654 by the Cossack chief Bohdan Khmelnytsky, who turned his back on the West and agreed to let independent Ukraine be absorbed into the Russian Empire.

"Ukraine's government suddenly bowed deeply to the Kremlin. The politics of brutal pressure evidently work," said Sweden's foreign minister Karl Bildt.  Here's how they work.

HALF-FULL REPORT 05/24/13

The Drudge Report has been running hilarious headlines this week on Anthony "Little" Weiner's run for Mayor of New York.  It was one year ago (last week of May, 2011) that Weinergate broke, resulting in the punniest week ever for the HFR.

How could Drudge resist red-siren headlining the news of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's putdown of Weiner's candidacy as PREMATURE ELECTION, and subtitling the headline with an altered quote of Cuomo:  "Shame on us if we erect him."

Nothing is deadlier to a politician than to be a joke in the eyes of the public.  Jay Leno did it to Zero on The Tonight Show Monday night (5/20).  Here's the transcript but be sure and watch the embedded video of Kids Ask Obama the Darndest Questions.

You know the HMS (His Majesty's Ship) Zero is in danger of sinking when the rats of the Libtard Media have started abandoning it.

On Wednesday (5/22), the editorial staff of the New York Times ran an official op-ed condemning "the Obama administration" for "threatening fundamental freedoms of the press."

And yesterday evening (5/23), the entire home page of HuffPo, the Libtard media's main website, was devoted to a demand that Eric Holder resign:  "TIME TO GO"  blared HuffPo.

The only news this week that could possibly be better than Holder soon to be an ex-AG is this.

Mrs. Zero  will be taking an "extended vacation" for the next few months, running away and hiding from the world and shutting up so we won't have to suffer her insufferable busybody hectoring.

UNCLE SAM IS ADDICTED TO OVERSPENDING

Tax revenue in 2013 will be lower (despite the just passed tax increase), and government spending will be higher than forecast. It's an easy prediction -- and this is why.

The capital gains tax rate and the tax on dividends is being raised from 15 percent to 23.5 percent for higher-income people. There are many studies, including those made by the U.S. Treasury, showing that the revenue-maximizing rate on capital gains is less than 15 percent.

Taking a capital gain is often a discretionary event, and it is well documented that capital gains realizations fall as the rate is increased. Thus, this rate increase will be a net revenue loser for the government.

Expenditures will also be far higher than forecast. The simple fact is the Obama administration and Congress, particularly the Democrats, are unable to resist the urge to spend more.
