FLASHBACK FRIDAY – WITH THE ANTI-COMMUNIST GUERILLAS IN CAMBODIA

jw-w-guerillas-in-cambodiaJuly, 1984. The KPNLF – Khmer People’s National Liberation Front – was the Anti-Communist guerrilla movement fighting the Soviet-backed Vietnamese Communists in Cambodia. When I was first there in 1961, Cambodia was then a land of serenity, with a gentle and tranquil people who were at peace with themselves and the world. Now it was a land of indescribable Communist horror.

It was such a privilege to be with these brave men willing to wage war against that horror and bring freedom to their country. I told their tale in Turning Back the Terror, the February 1985 cover story for Reason magazine. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #20 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

BADAB-E-SURT

springs-of-intensityThe “Springs of Intensity” in Persian are a series travertine terraces in remote northern Iran of such impressionist beauty they look like a masterpiece of Claude Monet. For thousands of years, water flowing down a mountainside from two hot mineral springs depositing carbonates have built these natural multi-colored staircases.

Iran is an enormous country – almost the size of Alaska, four times the size of California – filled with wonders, natural and cultural.  We were welcomed in every part of the country in our exploration of it in 2014.  While the current political climate does not allow that today, the day will come before long when we will return. THE LAND OF NOAH

noah-burial-ground-in-nakhchivan

We all know the story of Noah and the Ark told in Genesis (chapters 6-9). But do you know where Noah’s grave is? You’re looking at it. There is a tradition thousands of years old that he died and is buried here in the Land of Noah – Nakhchivan.

Known to the ancient Greeks and Romans as “Nakhsuana,” today Nakhchivan is an isolated enclave of Azerbaijan, cut off from the rest of the country by a strip of Armenia reaching Iran. You never heard of it because it’s unknown with a strange name – but the name literally means the Land of Noah. “Noah” is the Anglicization of Hebrew Noakh, or “Nakh” (“van” means “land,” “chi” means “of”).

azerbaijan-on-map

Noah’s tomb has been built, destroyed, rebuilt, and destroyed again repeatedly over the millennia. It’s now been built yet again on the original site. Looming near is Haça Dag, the Notched Mountain – where Noah’s Ark they say ran aground as the Flood waters receded, carving a notch on the summit before coming to rest on Mount Ararat about 50 miles to the north (in present-day Turkey).

The people here are wonderfully friendly. I was always told “welcome” everywhere. I was even spontaneously invited to a wedding party in a remote village. You’ll find it easy to make friends here too. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #3, photo ©Jack Wheeler)

FIVE FEET AWAY FROM AN 800-POUND GORILLA

r-gorilla1.jpg
©2019 Jack Wheeler

You know the adage about the “800-pound gorilla” going wherever he wants to – such as five feet from you in the Virunga Mountains of Rwanda. It is one of the world’s great thrills to be this close to these giants and feel at ease doing so. They are “habituated” to small groups of people whom they ignore. You of course are very quiet and do nothing to alarm them, just observing the little ones playing, mothers nursing, young ones climbing trees, huge male silverbacks watching over their families.

Gorillas are vegetarians, males eating up to 75 pounds of vegetation a day – thus they spend most of their waking hours chewing! The biggest silverbacks never get anywhere near 800 pounds by the way – 450 to 500 pounds at most (like the fellow in the photo). Big enough, believe me.

Rwanda is one of the best-run countries in all Africa. President Paul Kagame deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for healing his nation after the genocidal horrors of the 1990s. That’s far in the past now in this beautiful, peaceful land. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #93 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

THE NATURAL INFINITY POOL OF SOCOTRA

pool-of-socotraNational Geographic calls the remote island of Socotra off the coast of Yemen in the Indian Ocean “the most alien-looking place on our planet,” because of its incredibly weird and bizarre plant life like the Dragon’s Blood Tree.

Yet it is safely far away from anarchic Yemen, peaceful and serene in its isolation.  And it contains places of mesmerizing beauty – like this natural infinity pool on a cliff edge high above the ocean in full view.  Socotra is spectacularly exotic, like nowhere else in our world. It is truly life-memorable to experience it. Wheeler Expeditions was there in the Spring of 2014 – and we’ll be there again in the Spring of ’22. HALF-FULL REPORT 05/14/21

battered-bidenThis was Wednesday’s (5/12) front page lead headline story on Fox News.  A headline of Schadenfreudelicious beauty. And here’s even better news – it’s all downhill for the Dems from now on.

Yet this is just the prelims, the warmup, and there’s no way Dems can avoid the main event: double digit inflation.  You saw where we’re headed in Skye’s Links yesterday (5/13): The Inflation Monster Has Been Unleashed

There are claims that means Jimmy Carter’s Misery Index of inflation, interest rates, and unemployment all three in double digits – but it’s worse than that.  POTUS is right – because the Dems are in a trap of doom: they can’t raise interest rates.

KEEPING YOUR SANITY XVII

dogfish-beerIt’s true what they say about beer – it’s so much more than just a breakfast drink!

Yes, we are going to talk about beer and sanity.  Sounds like fun – and this will be, in ways you didn’t expect.  We start with a type of beer that’s become a ubiquitous craze among breweries and beer enthusiasts:  IPA.

That stands for “India Pale Ale.”  Does that mean beer that comes from India, or once did as a historical name?  Neither – for it has a magic ingredient instead.

TUNING OUT WOKEISM

blah-blahIf wokeness should continue and “win,” by now we all know where it will end up. After all, this is not a prairie-fire, peasants-with-pitchforks, spontaneous bottom-up revolution.

The woke Left seeks a top-down erasure of America, engineered by the likes of LeBron James from his $40 million estate talking revolution to Oprah at her $90 million castle, and as the top executives of Coke, Target, and Delta Airlines believe their $17 million-a-year salaries make them experts on the crimes of non-diversity, exclusion, and inequity.

Anytime revolutionaries at the outset of their enterprises seek exemption from the consequences of their own ideology, we know their plans will end badly for everyone else. Or just end.

HAVE YOU NOTICED THAT WOKENESS HAS JUST DIED?

woke-thru-lifeWhite Leftist politicians and hipsters have already killed wokeness in American culture.  They just don’t know it yet.

There’s been this repeating cultural joke occurring throughout my lifetime that, for some reason, never seems to be recognized by those who are ridiculed by its many iterations.

That is, when liberal white hipsters adopt any cultural fad, they manage to end the fad by making it spectacularly unpopular in no time flat.

WHY THE DEMS ARE IN PANIC OVER THE ARIZONA AUDIT

stop-the-stealThis might be the understatement of the year:

“Democrats are really worried about the Arizona audit because Democrats know what they did.

— Emerald Robinson ✝️ (@EmeraldRobinson) May 5, 2021

And here is why.

The inimitable Ray Blehar, a retired senior DoD analyst, has just completed a top-level analysis of the Maricopa County results.  His findings are earth-shattering.

THE FASCISM THE LEFT PLANS FOR US NEXT

sheepdog-begoneWith GoogTwitFace having upped its bias and dropped its mask, and corporate America joining academia, the media and entertainment on the Dark Side, these entities act as a malevolent monolith silencing dissident voices from Maine to Maui.

But it would be naïve to think the Left, which craves power and wants total control, will be satisfied with its current soft authoritarianism.

This brings us to two developments that could cause the raising of eyebrows if not militias.

DIGITAL LETTERS OF MARQUE – THE SOLUTION TO CYBER PIRACY

anti-piracyAfter the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, the Goodyear blimp Resolute was put into service spotting enemy submarines. There’s a lesson for 21st-century cyberwarfare.

Among the specific Enumerated Powers of Article 1 Section 8 the Constitution gives Congress is Clause 11:  "to grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal”—essentially licenses authorizing private parties to wage war on the government’s behalf.

The Resolute was a privately owned U.S. craft, flown by a civilian crew out of Los Angeles. If letters of marque could be adapted for flying machines, why not computing machines?  Why can’t letters of marque be used to blow hackers out of the digital water?
