THE STUPIDEST MOST DESTRUCTIVE TAX LEGISLATION EVER GOES INTO EFFECT TODAY

Do you know why the U.S. economy shrank almost 3 percent in the first quarter of this year?

When the news of the dreadful gross domestic product (GDP) number came out last week, many were surprised, but none were more surprised than the folks in the Obama administration. Many of their supporters had been saying this was the year of a real economic recovery.

The quick reaction was to blame the bad GDP numbers on the cold weather.  It is rather ironic that the president blames the bad economy on the cold weather, while at the same time he is running around the country saying we have to spend many more tax dollars to prevent warmer weather a hundred years from now.

But get ready for much worse economic weather.  Today, July 1, the administration implements perhaps the most stupid and destructive piece of tax regulation ever devised - the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA).

This one regulation by itself may well cause another drop in GDP during the third quarter of this year.  The Disaster of FATCA has begun.

STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR ISLAMIST MONSTERS

When it comes to fanatical Islam, we're entranced by the symptoms but refuse to name the disease.

The extremes to which Western elites will go to avoid blaming radical Islam for terrorism cripples our efforts to protect innocent Moslems. Terrified of offending butchers, we insist that we're the bigots, not them. We make excuses for monsters.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western learning is forbidden," kidnaps 200 schoolgirls, and the world rightly takes notice.

But what about the thousands of peaceful civilians, both Christian and Moslem, Boko Haram has killed, purportedly to install an Islamist state? What about the medical workers, pious volunteers, who are murdered in a faith's name?

Hollywood suddenly woke up to Islamic fundamentalism last week in the strangest possible way, boycotting the Beverly Hills Hotel because it's owned by the Sultan of Brunei, who plans to impose the cruelest provisions of Sharia law on his fiefdom's women.

Hey, I'm all for the boycott (can't afford the joint, anyway), but this is a combination fashion-statement and NIMBYism par excellence. On vacation, those same stars will stay happily at the Four Seasons, even though a Saudi prince has owned nearly half of its shares. How are women's rights going in Saudi Arabia?

THE ISLAND OF FUBAR

nauru_map.png

Nauru.  Welcome to the world's smallest country - a tiny isolated rock in a remote part of the Pacific, right on the Equator, 8.1 square miles with 9,300 people living around its 10-mile circumference.  No one lives in the interior and we'll soon find out why.  Of all 193 Member States of the United Nations, Nauru is the smallest in population.  Only Monaco (less than 1 square mile on the French Riviera) is smaller in area.

I wanted to reach the three most unknown and hidden nations in the South Pacific on this excursion.  I found Tuvalu entrancing, and Tarawa in Kiribati repelling - but now I have made it all the way to the bottom of the Pacific's barrel.

I have been to almost all of those 193 UN countries (189 in fact), and I can confirm that Nauru is more FUBAR than any other.  Actually, that's an understatement.  You all know what the acronym means, and Nauru takes it to a whole new dimension, a higher standard of fubaredness than the rest of the world which is unlikely to be surpassed in our lifetimes if ever.

Better get comfortable in your favorite chair with at least three fingers of your favorite adult beverage at the ready to get through this.  You'll find it hard to believe but this is a true story.  Kafka himself couldn't have made it up, although he would have relished the irony in how it applies to us.  The photos are all mine.

We'll start with what Nauru unbelievably looks like.  Note the green strip around the perimeter and the vast gray uninhabited interior.

THE POLISH STAKE INTO THE RUSSIAN VAMPIRE

Warsaw, Poland. We killed it once, when it was disguised as the Soviet Union.  But vampires have this way of not staying dead, and it has risen again to suck the life blood out of any country it can sink its teeth into.  So it looks like we're going to have to kill this creature all over again.  This time, let's drive a wooden stake through its heart and end it for good.  Looks like the stake will be made in Poland.

Poland's history is one of tragedies and triumphs. It starts in 966, when the chief of the Polan people, Mieszko (930-992), rejected the entreaties of other Slavic tribes to accept what was becoming the Russian Orthodox Church, and chose to be baptized as a Roman Catholic instead.

It was a momentous decision that turned his people towards the West, rather than the East.  Miesko's son Bronislaw created Poland as a Christian nation, with Pope John XIX declaring him the first King of Poland in 1025, and the Poles starting to participate in Western culture.

The greatest Polish King, Jan Sobieski (1629-1696), is also one of the greatest heroes in the history of Western Civilization.  In a word, he saved it.

JOHN NEHRING 1942-2008

One of the most beloved members of our To The Point family has passed on.

Anyone who knew him could assure you that you'll never meet a kinder, more decent man than John Nehring.  There was a sweetness, a gentleness to him, combined with a profound love of liberty and a core of pro-American steel.

An Eagle Scout and National Merit Scholar from Columbus, Ohio, John graduated near the top of his class at the Air Force Academy.  He was an F-4 Phantom fighter pilot in Vietnam, got a Masters degree in economics at Georgetown, taught business & economics at the Air Force Academy, served in the Air Force for 30 years and retired as a full bird colonel.

For the past several years, John taught economics at Embry-Riddle University in Colorado Springs, opening his students' eyes to the great advocates of economic freedom, such as  Ludwig von Mises, Frederic Bastiat, and Milton Friedman.

IS THAT ALL YOU GOT?

The Democrat Party is in thrall, we're told, of the mighty power of the Moonbat Left, with its millions of passionate adherents all ruthlessly organized via MoveOn.org to bring doom to any politician who dares oppose them.

Their strength would literally be on parade, they boasted, in the nation's capital in a glorious resurrection of the left's finest moment of anti-war protest forty years ago.   More than a hundred thousand of them would march on the Pentagon, humbling their arrogant warmongering government over Iraq as their parents and grandparents once did over Vietnam.

Why they chose March 17, 2007 as the "40th Anniversary" of the legendary-to-them March on the Pentagon is mysterious, as the latter took place on October 21, 1967.

On that October day 40 years ago, well over 100,000 lefties, cheered on by Jane Fonda, Noam Chomsky, and Abbie Hoffman, marched from the Lincoln Memorial over Memorial Bridge and down to the Pentagon, where they were met by 2,500 armed Army soldiers.

Lefty author Norman Mailer wrote a book about it, The Armies of the Night, which however poorly and egomaniacally written, won a Pulitzer Prize.

No one, not even as awful a writer as Mailer, is going to write a book about the pathetic fizzle of this last Saturday.  What a bust.

THE AYATOLLAH IS DYING

The Supreme Leader of Iran - the man who really runs the place, not the Persian Midget Ahmadinejad - is the Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.  Some people confuse him with his mentor and founder of the Iranian Revolution, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, as the spellings are confusingly similar.

But Khomeini died in 1989, and Khamenei assumed power after that.  Ever since, he has been the Terror Master in Chief, the principal sponsor of Islamic terrorism in the Middle East, especially against Israel and America in Iraq.  Now, at age 66, he is dying.

Thus the mullahs are now engaged in a succession struggle, and they are worried that the Iranian people might seize the moment to act against the regime.  Most worried of all is President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, as there is an effort being made in the Majlis, the Iranian Parliament, to impeach him.

DVD MATH

You know what they say about computers - the minute the newest models come off the assembly line they're already obsolete, because back in the lab they've already developed a prototype two generations ahead of the most advanced commercially available systems.

As the old saying goes, "If cars had progressed as fast as computers, we would be driving at 500 MPH in a $25 car that gets 2 million miles per gallon and seats the population of China."

This is relevant to many of us who are interested in burning DVDs ...

PUTIN LOSES CONTROL

Vladimir Putin has lost control of Russia's economy and may be forced to impose Soviet-style exchange controls after "shock and awe" action by the central bank failed to stem the collapse of the ruble.

"The situation is critical," said the central bank's vice-chairman, Sergei Shvetsov. "What is happening is a nightmare that we could not even have imagined a year ago."

The currency spiked from 71 to 98 against the euro yesterday (12/16) in the biggest one-day drop since the default crisis in 1998 as capital flight gathered pace, despite a drastic rise in interest rates to 17% the day before (12/15) intended to crush speculators and show resolve. It closed at 87, and at this writing today (12/17) is at 83.

Yields on two-year Russian bonds spiraled to 15.36%, while credit default swaps are pricing in a one-third chance of a sovereign default. The shares of Russia's biggest lender, Sberbank, fell 18%.

Neil Shearing, from Capital Economics, said the spectacular failure of the rate shock may bring matters to a head. "If a rise of 650 basis points won't do the job, we are near the end. That means stringent capital controls," he said.

In Washington, the White House said it had no intention of easing pressure on Russia to halt the freefall. "It is President Putin's decision to make. The aim is to sharpen the choice that he faces," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest yesterday.

After years of bluster and suggestions by Mr. Putin that the US is a paper tiger, the Kremlin is now coming face to face with the cataclysmic consequences of what it has done by invading Ukraine and changing Europe's borders by force.

HALF-FULL REPORT 08/22/14

It's an understatement to say this has been an eventful week, reeking with horror, mayhem, and jaw-dropping Democrat thuggery.

Yet, at week's end - at least Friday morning as this is written - the glass is turning out to be more than half-full.  The bad guys are taking it in the shorts from Austin to Ferguson to Donetsk to Gaza to Iraq. And it's been a bad week for Zero too...

We'll start with the good news about Raed Atar, Muhammad Abu Shamaleh, and Muhammad Barhoum:  they're dead.  The three top Hamas military commanders were nailed in an IAF air strike yesterday (8/21).  It's a Moral and Military Blow for Hamas, declared the Jerusalem Post...

You may have noticed there's a new YouTube graphic in the left side bar.  That's a link to the TTP YouTube video channel.  I kicked it off with four vids of me that I hope you enjoy (and yes, one is the Arm Wrestling Putin saga).  Feel free to send them to everyone you know on earth.  We'll be adding to our video library (and not just me pontificating!).  Let us know on the Forum what you think...

OK, here's the question of the moment.  On January 20, 2017 when President-elect Perry takes the oath of office on the Capitol's West Portico, will he have sent a thank you note and personal invitation to attend to Rosemary Lehmberg?...

Then there's the Epic Fail of Ferguson.

THE COLD FACTS ABOUT REALITY DENIERS

The gullible give in to the government's global-warming myth

{youtube}tiO68V45bjY{/youtube}

"Wasting Resources on a potential threat ignores problems at hand."

Much of the media treat those who are skeptics about man-made global warming with the pejorative term "global-warming deniers," as if they were Holocaust deniers. Yet many of those in the media who watched presidential spokesperson Jay Carney engage in what can only politely be called "reality denial" day after day were-all-too silent about his obvious misstatements.

Reality deniers get away with many of their fibs because...

WHY THE MIDDLE CLASS IS VANISHING

Just about any measure of "income inequality" reported by the media or trumpeted by Democrats is grossly misleading.

How gross? Take a look at the table below. Note that it is for Mississippi, one of the lowest welfare payment states. Note, too, that this chart is pre-Obamacare, which is hugely redistributive.

As you'll see, after considering taxes and redistribution, someone earning $60,000 per year has about $3,400 less effective income than someone earning $14,500 per year. The trend toward part time jobs started before Obamacare, though that made the incentives for part time work even stronger than shown in the chart.

The big drop in the percentages of people participating in the work force is not due to aging Baby Boom demographics. The percentage of the 55 and older cohort that is employed has actually increased since 2009. The prime working age participation of the 18-44 and 45-55 year olds has dropped dramatically.

Looking at the chart, you can see that:

SACRILEGE IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC

Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll, Kiribati.  I might as well warn you right up front.  You are really, really not going to like this.  You are going to get seriously steamed.

Tarawa is sacred history in the annals of the United States Marines.  The Battle of Tarawa was one of the most brutal and lethal in the Corps' history.

After losing Guadalcanal to the Marines in 1942, the Japanese were determined not to lose Tarawa, with its vitally strategic position in the Central Pacific.  They spent a year building up an incredibly well-fortified array of defenses on Betio to control the entrance to the lagoon and thus the entire atoll.

The Japanese commander, Rear Admiral Keiji Shibazaki, was so confidant of his preparations and men his message to Tokyo was, "It would take one million men one hundred years" to conquer Tarawa.

It took the US Marines 76 hours.  But at a horrible cost.  On Tarawa, the Marines demonstrated epic bravery and heroism - guts and glory beyond normal imagination. 1,113 Marines died, 2,290 wounded.  It is no mystery whatever that Tarawa is a sacred memory for all Marines - and to trash and besmirch it would be sacrilegious.

Yet that is exactly and precisely what has happened, and in the most disgusting manner thinkable.

THE DEMOCRATS ARE A CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY, NOT A POLITICAL PARTY

On Tuesday (5/31), Ron Paul announced that "we are on the verge of having way too much dictatorship in Washington, D.C."  Verge?  Verge??

The time is way past for verging.  Our Federal Government has already become a dictatorship run by a criminal conspiracy calling itself a political party - just as the totalitarian conspiracy of Islamism calls itself a religion.

We owe no respect whatever to a fascist ideology posing as a religion - and we owe no respect whatever to a criminal gang posing as a political party.

The time is way past for ending the charade.  If it is not ended now - if the Democrat Gang retains the White House in 2012 - then game over for America.

We'll itemize a few of the legion of examples of the Gang's criminality - but at the outset, let's clearly state the purpose here.

It is of mortal importance for our future that we deny legitimacy to the Democrats.  They are not a legitimate political party advocating legitimate political goals.  They are a collection of looters, gangsters, thugs, extortionists, hustlers, shakedown specialists, scam artists, smooth-talking con-men, and mafiosi.  All banded together to steal our money and control our lives with guns.

TRULY POST-MODERN ART

"Modern art" is typified by meaningless blobs of paint splattered on a canvas, with "post-modern art" equally mindless and unintelligible.  TTP is therefore pleased to salute a real artist Chris Hopkins and his magnificent painting Saluting Reagan:
saluting_reagan
The price of the original oil on canvas is $50,000.  A poster, however, is only 24 bucks.  At that price, we can all afford to salute the 20th century's greatest American president.
