WHERE IS JOHN WILKES WHEN WE NEED HIM?
[This Monday’s Archive was originally in TTP on May 15, 2015. It called for another John Wilkes, “Champion of English Freedom” as his statue on Fetter Street in London declares, to run for President as the Champion of American Freedom. One month later, on June 16, Donald Trump accompanied by Melania, rode the elevator in Trump Tower to the lobby to formally announce his presidential candidacy. Some of his advisors, I later learned, read TTP. I’ve often wondered since if this essay helped make his decision. Regardless, there’s a message here to all of us as the midterms loom.]

We need John Wilkes (1725-1797), the British Member of Parliament and Lord Mayor of London hated by King George III, hero to America’s Founders, and the inspiration for the Bill of Rights – particularly the Fourth Amendment.
Wilkes was a radical for liberty with such a lacerating wit George III called him "that Devil Wilkes." At a dinner party hosted by the king’s son and heir (who would later become George IV), Wilkes offered a toast to the king’s health. "Since when have you been so solicitous of my father’s health?" asked the Prince of Wales.
Wilkes instantly replied with a courteous smile, "Since I had the pleasure of making your Royal Highness’ acquaintance."
