UNDERSTANDING OUR SOCIAL NATURE

Our social nature has huge benefits, and underlies much of our resilience and success as a species.

But it can also steer us in bad, sometimes disastrous directions, and can be used to manipulate us.

We are social creatures. We influence one another, we care about each other, we follow each other and are able to cooperate and act together as a team.

We’re also cultural creatures. We learn from each other – and learn most effectively by watching what other people do.

It matters to us what other people say and think and do. The accumulated knowledge and habits and standards of the ages become part of our own self-concept.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: CLIMBING THE MATTERHORN AT AGE 14

The Matterhorn at 14,692 ft in the Swiss Alps is arguably the most famous mountain in the world. By extreme luck, I was able to reach its summit with my guide Alfons Franzen at age 14 (in 1958!). The summit is not a point but a ridge 100 feet or so long and only 2 feet wide, like a knife blade in the sky.

SLOVENIA’S VINTGAR GORGE

In a hidden corner of Europe, the Radovna River pours off the Julian Alps to carve out the Vintgar Gorge with crystal clear water. A mile-long walkway with towering limestone cliffs on either side is your access.

Nearby is the gorgeous Lake Bled, with Bled Castle suspended atop a shoreline cliff. The medieval village of Piran, built on a spit of land projecting into the Adriatic Sea and encircled by a white sand beach is a short drive away. Ljubljana is one of Europe’s most utterly charming capital cities.

Most people have only heard of Slovenia as the birthplace of First Lady Melania Trump, but those who have been here understand it is one of the most entrancing countries on the European continent – pristine beauty, spotless environment, friendly and hospitable people, safe and very well-run. Whenever your next visit to Europe may be, try to include a few days or week or so here. You’ll never run out of fascinating things to do. LION ON A CAT

Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, Tanzania. Ngorongoro is one of the world’s great natural wonders, created over two million years ago when the cone of a gigantic volcano collapsed in on itself. The crater floor is over 100 square miles, teeming with African wildlife that includes the densest population of lions in the world. You’re only allowed to drive on certain dirt roads to see them, but lions sometime have different ideas.

Here’s a lioness we found sunning herself on the hood of a Caterpillar road-grader, completely unconcerned by our presence. We spend a few days exploring Ngorongoro to cap off our safaris in isolated roadless areas of the Serengeti. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #286, photo ©Jack Wheeler)

THE AVATAR MOUNTAINS

The gigantic forest-covered stone pillars of Zhangjiajie in a remote region of Hunan are so famous for being a featured location in the Avatar movie they’ve been renamed the Avatar Mountains. You can take a cable car through them to view them from above. Hard to get to and certainly worth it. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #269 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

THE PAINTED CHURCHES OF THE TROODOS MOUNTAINS

For 500 years, from Ca. 1000 to 1500 AD, the Byzantine Christians on the eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus labored with love to decorate the interior of their humble churches tucked away in hidden valleys of the Troodos Mountains.

There are a total of 10 such churches which are today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The one you see here is the church of the Kykkos Monastery, with its extravagantly painted vaulted ceiling preserved immaculately for centuries. WHITE WOMEN ARGUE BLACK MEN SHOULD ONLY HAVE THREE-FIFTHS OF A JURY VOTE

U.S. — As the aftermath of the Lindsay Clancy mistrial continued to reverberate across the country, one member of the jury confirmed that white women were now arguing that black men should only have three-fifths of a jury vote.

Multiple jurors have come forward to be interviewed in the media, with news breaking Friday morning that the lone holdout juror who refused to find Clancy not guilty of murdering her three children was a black man who dared to think for himself and not just do what he's told.

"There should be some type of compromise in these situations," the woman said on CBS Mornings. "We were all wanting to let her off the hook for strangling her kids, but this guy was just sitting there, totally hung up on the fact that this mother viciously murdered her own children. We think, moving forward, gentlemen like this should only count for three-fifths of a jury vote. That seems fair, all things considered."

Progressives explained that individuals like the black man who sat on the jury may not be educated enough to draw a reasoned conclusion on such a complex case, similar to how women and minorities aren't intelligent enough to obtain official government identification. "We have to make special accommodations for people who aren't white liberals," the juror continued. "That's why his vote shouldn't count for quite as much as a regular person."

At publishing time, the white female jurors had also advocated for having black male jurors use their own separate water fountains and be relegated to a separate jury box.

The Global Model Breaks ________________________________________________________________________________________

The world is rediscovering physical reality. The Strait of Hormuz has reminded markets and governments alike that geography can still dictate outcomes, while disruptions in Nepal have laid bare the dependence of modern economies on functioning infrastructure. Germany’s industrial base has exposed the fragility of complex production systems under stress, the Falklands have returned questions of sovereignty over resources to the fore, and Canada has demonstrated that even the most integrated trading relationships remain subject to the hard constraints of borders. The particulars vary, yet the underlying message does not: control of physical systems is once again a strategic imperative.

The deeper story is one of models that no longer fit the evidence. For a generation, the prevailing assumptions of globalization treated trade as reliably frictionless, energy as abundantly available, and geography as largely irrelevant. Parallel confidence has taken root in institutions that rely on sophisticated models of human behavior, technological progress and risk. Recent events have repeatedly collided with those assumptions. Karl Popper’s insistence on respecting evidence that can falsify a theory, and the Bayesian discipline of continually updating beliefs as new information arrives, both point find that reality is generating data faster than many institutions appear willing to process it.

Nations will consequently place greater weight on production and resilience. Companies will rediscover the strategic value of tangible assets. Financial markets will, in time, price the shift. Artificial intelligence will accelerate the adjustment, if only because the digital economy itself rests on vast physical foundations. The world is entering an era in which physicality matter sagain. The physical world never vanished; the models simply stopped accounting for it.

Not just America but the entire World has been going progressively more insane for over a year now, ever since Red China attacked the planet with its Chicom Virus.

Now, the Democrat-Fascist Party has successfully politicized the Scamdemic to enable its theft of the presidency and the demolition of democracy itself. We are entering a period of darkness for America during which it will be difficult to keep ourselves sane.

Thus today TTP launches a weekly Monday series that hopefully will help in Keeping Your Sanity. My first effort will be to share something very personal with you.

“NICE” CANADA ONCE PLANNED TO INVADE AMERICA

Canada is furious about “Lake America.”

President Trump’s executive order renaming Lake Ontario has been received north of the border as one more intolerable act of American arrogance: an insult to Canadian sovereignty, an affront to Canadian dignity, perhaps even proof that the United States has become a threat.

Trump is trolling, of course. But as always, the trolling isn’t random.

Negotiation, like poker, is a contest in emotional control: the player who keeps his head can manipulate the one who loses his. Trump is deliberately provoking Canada because anger clouds judgment, wounded pride invites mistakes, and an emotional opponent is easier to maneuver.

Canada keeps responding with outrage and claims of betrayal. Trump keeps provoking it because the provocation keeps working.

FLU SEASON AND YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw constantly studied current scientific literature in their efforts to support the immune system in healthful and natural ways. Their goal was to promote health and prevent degradation rather than to merely treat it after it is already apparent.

Because the immune system typically declines with age, supporting it nutritionally becomes particularly important as we grow older.

TRUMP: GREATEST OR WORST PRESIDENT EVER

On Thursday, President Trump dropped what appeared to be a ranking of presidents that featured himself as the best and Obama, Biden among the worst.

Many people, this author among them, began to scoff at Trump's list.

What a horrible list!

Where's Reagan? Where's Nixon?

Tens of thousands of conservatives and liberals were very upset by this list because, well, let's be honest, it sucks.

The thing is – It's not Trump's actual list.

ADAM SMITH AND THE IMPORTANCE OF CAPITALISM IN THE AMERICAN REPUBLIC

Capitalism is under attack from classrooms to town halls to voting booths.

According to polls, a rising segment of the population is calling for socialism or even communism as young people embrace a radical chic in the country.

And this week, another socialist looks ready to join a growing “squad” in Congress.

On our 250th anniversary, the fight over capitalism and economic freedom could prove critical to the future of this republic.

However, there is an unexpected change that could help reverse this trend.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently announced that one million families have already signed up for the new tax-privileged Trump Accounts, which will be seeded with $1,000 in taxpayer funds for children born between Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 31, 2028.

With an anticipated 25 million participants, the initiative is one of the most ambitious and potentially impactful in U.S. history.

But its true impact may be far greater than the wealth that it could generate for families. It may just be the determinative factor in preserving this Republic in this century.

TAXPAYER-FUNDED SOCIALIST BREEDING CAMPUSES

Recently, I published good news about higher education — some colleges and universities are endeavoring to restore campus civility.

As the fall academic semester gets underway, some schools are attempting to contain the small cadres of adolescents who are responsible for most campus incivility.

How? By endeavoring to instill values in students that, in most cases, parents failed to imbue. And that is a heavy lift.

Too many young people arrive for their freshman year without a solid mooring of values, and consequently are malleable. They can be shaped into whatever form that comports with the dominant campus cultural influence.

It is difficult enough for students with solid faith and values roots to withstand the campus peer culture, but those without strong roots are at high risk.

A longtime friend, Brian Beckley, has devoted his career to mentoring high school students so they can pursue their purpose with wisdom, character, and courage once in college.

He focuses on fortifying their values so they can join others who stand for what is good and right on college campuses, rather than falling into the leftist abyss.

I asked Brian for his perspective on why students are susceptible.

CONSCIOUSLY CREATING RELATIONSHIPS

An acquaintance the other day asked me what I do, and I told her that I’m a Marriage and Family Counselor, as well as a Life Coach.

Then she asked an interesting question: “Is compromise the key to a happy marriage?”

At first I was tempted to say yes.

Compromise is certainly one part of two different people sharing a life together.

We can’t do everything we want whenever we want it; we have to find ways of adapting to each other’s needs and inclinations.

But thinking about it a little more closely, I instead said an emphatic, “No.” Compromise is not really the key.

Compromise is kind of like when one person wants a room painted yellow, the other wants it painted blue, and we compromise and get green – but neither of us may even like green.

Compromise is sometimes win/win, sometimes not. There are certainly times when we compromise, but it isn’t the driving force of a great relationship.

What is the driving force of a great relationship?
