THE AFRICANIZATION OF AMERICA

Accra, Ghana.  When Britain granted Ghana full independence (the first African colony to gain it) in March of 1957, it was the richest tropical country in the world, with huge foreign currency reserves from massive sales of cocoa, coffee, gold, timber, and bauxite.

The Brits had provided the new nation with an efficient civil service, an impartial judiciary, a fair electoral system with competent elected politicians, and a prosperous middle class.

Yet they allowed a man to lead Ghana who was a charismatic charlatan, an intellectual lightweight, a self-proclaimed Marxist who hated capitalism, a self-worshipping narcissist of the highest order, and a black racist who hated whites and the West.  To the surprise of no one with unblinkered vision, but to the shocked surprise and denial of every fawning liberal on the planet, he proceeded to run Ghana straight into the ground.

The parallels with Zero are obvious.  That white liberal guilt is responsible for Zero is fairly well-recognized among those who are intellectually honest.  What is little understood, however, is that it is also responsible for what inevitably happens as a consequence of African Big Man government: the Africanization of that government.

AMERICA AND NEHEMIAH

[This is the text of Gov. Rick Perry's address to the Republican Jewish Coalition in Washington DC yesterday, December 7]

It is an honor to be with you today and to share my thoughts on faith, foreign policy and the free State of Israel.

As we gather today, I am struck by the coincidence that two of the American citizens being unlawfully detained abroad today are Jewish: Alan Gross in Cuba, and Warren Weinstein by al Qaida in Pakistan.  In both cases their offense was spreading political and economic freedom to better the lives of less advantaged people around the globe.

The repressive Castro regime should not be rewarded with increased tourism while Mr. Gross languishes in prison, and Pakistani authorities should clearly understand the significance of rescuing Mr. Weinstein from terrorist elements within their borders if they value the foreign aid they seem to take for granted.

We have an Administration in Washington today whose foreign policy is an incoherent mess. They embolden our adversaries while isolating our allies.

CLEANING OUT N’AWLINS

What’s the difference between a disaster and an election in New Orleans?

The buses run during an election.

Why isn’t New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin worried about all the dead people being found in Katrina’s aftermath?

Because they’ll keep right on voting anyway.

Tasteless? Here’s what really tasteless: Cleaning up New Orleans physically without cleaning it up politically. Not draining New Orleans’ political cesspool of organized crime and corruption. Not evacuating Mayor Ray Nagin and every city official and police officer on the take before they get their greasy hands on all those billions of taxpayer dollars to rebuild the place.

SHORTING THE EURO

When Ted Turner compared Fox News to Hitler this week, a Fox spokesman commented that “Ted is understandably bitter having lost his ratings, his network, and now his mind - we wish him well.” It is time to feel such sympathy for other famous businessfolk who have similarly lost their minds - such as Warren Buffett.

The legendary investment guru has allowed his newly acquired left-wing politics to idiotize him. Just like Turner, he sets up an assumed liberal populism as an envy-deflection device, ends up hating America and the capitalist system that made him wealthy - and becomes a fool in the process.

To be clear: only a fool would bet long-range on the euro now.

AESCHYLUS AND AMERICA

THE COMING CAPITALIST SALVATION OF INDIA

Hi, everyone.  I'm Karma Singh, a longtime TTPer in Bangalore, India's Silicon Valley.  I was with Jack Wheeler on his incredible Hidden China adventure last month, and we talked about what's going on in India, the world's second most populous country and China's rival for superpower status in Asia.

Our conversations got pretty interesting, so Jack suggested I write an India Report for TTP.  Here's my first effort.  Let's jump right in.

India's major drawback is the people administering the country. Plagued with monumental amounts of corruption, there are no words to describe these monstrous looters.   According to an article published back in 2010, unofficial estimates of black money obtained through government corruption is pegged around 1.4 Trillion US Dollars

The hope for India lies in the elections next spring.  For there is a man being hailed by the Indian press as India's "capitalist hero."  He is the amazingly successful governor of one of India's largest states, and he stands an excellent chance of being our next Prime Minister.  His name is Narendra Modi.

THE REGRET MATRIX

If you are a member of Congress and you wish to be re-elected, do you increase your chances of winning by voting for or against raising taxes on the "rich"?

In decision theory, "regret" is defined as the difference between the actual payoff and the payoff that would have been obtained if a different course of action had been taken. In the upcoming votes on the "fiscal cliff," members of Congress will be making decisions about what is best for the economy and the nation - and what is best if their highest goal is re-election.

You may think that these two decisions are at odds.  But members of Congress need to know that the Regret Matrix shows they are not.

SHARIA FOR REAL

chad_cameroon_149.jpg

Famboun, Cameroon.  This is a Ndiki Drum.  It is used by the Sultan of Bamoun to call his subjects to their end-of the-year Nguon festival over which he presides.  It can be heard for miles.

The carved wooden forearms and hands propped up at the drum's end are not the drumsticks.  They are symbolic for what the real drumsticks used to be.  Until the British and French put an end to the custom in the 1920s, the Ndiki drumsticks were human arms, amputated at the elbow off captured slaves.  Four drummers were needed to properly pound the drum, each requiring two drumsticks: eight amputated human arms in total.

The Bamoun Sultanate was a Moslem Slave State.  It derived its power from enslaving neighboring peoples.  Amputating slaves' arms for drumsticks was one of the many ways the Sultan broke their will to resist and keep them in bondage.  It was founded by this guy:

MY NIGHT AT THE MARINE CORPS BALL

I'm writing this after attending an event that turned out to be one of the most moving evenings I've ever had.

I had the honor and privilege last Saturday night (11/12) of attending The Basic School Instructor Battalion 236th Marine Corps Birthday Ball at the Greater Richmond Convention Center with Corporal Kelsey DeSantis.

I knew I would have an evening that I wouldn't forget. Something I could tell my friends about. What I didn't know was how moved I would be by the whole experience.

I've always been very vocal about my support of our Armed Forces. I've always felt like they offered us the opportunity to live our lives freely without the fear that so many other nations have to endure still to this day. And, they do it without asking for anything in return. I had this very feeling walking into this dinner. So, to say I was stoked to be there would be more than accurate.

FREEDOMS BIRTHDAY

[This was originally in To The Point for last year, July 4, 2004. It is just as apt for 2005.]

July 4th is Freedom’s Birthday. My suggestion is, amidst the fireworks and barbeques and flag-waving fun - all of which is great - that you take the time to feel good about America.

Put aside your worries and concerns, your frustrations and fears about what’s wrong with America. For one day, forget the negative - put it all in a zip-lock bag, hide it in the back of the freezer, and pretend it doesn’t exist.

One reason is that for all your worries about America’s culture and morality - you and all your fellow conservatives can feel good about your country. Liberals can’t. One of the defining characteristics of leftie-liberals is an inability to feel truly proud of their country - proud to the bone.

You cannot be a liberal without feeling apologetic and embarrassed over being an American. You cannot be a conservative without lacking any such embarrassment or compulsion to apologize at all.

Being an American is simply the coolest thing in the world. Wherever I have traveled in the world - it’s over 180 countries now - whenever someone asks me, “Where are you from?”, it’s always such a thrill to answer, “America - I’m an American.”

THE FIVE-STEP JET LAG SOLUTION

It’s summer, which means summer vacation, which means for some of you buzzing off to a distant time zone and getting wigged out on jet lag. For business travelers, jet lag can translate loss of mental acuity into loss of an important deal. For government folk, it can translate into failed negotiations or embarrassing misstatements to a foreign press.

I’ve used a five-step jet lag avoidance method for some years now. I’ve given it to a number of corporate CEOs, diplomats, Capitol Hill staffers, Congressmen and Senators. They tell me it works. It works for me. Here it is and I trust it will work for you.

A NEW YEAR’S REQUEST

To the Point received the following from a friend in the Pentagon:

CHRISTMAS VISITORS

They came in single file, about 50 of them. Silent ambassadors, to tell us who they were. They moved at a slow pace, passing us for over 20 minutes.

Some walked, while others pushed their wheelchairs as best they could. Some were helped along on crutches by their wives or sweethearts. They were escorted front and rear by US Marines in dress blue uniform. I have never seen prouder Marines. The Amputee Ward from Walter Reed Army Medical Center visited the Pentagon today.

Some wore looks of resolution, pride, or dignity. Many had prosthetic devices where limbs used to be. All of them wore looks of surprise. We, the 26,000 employees of the Pentagon, lined both sides of the A ring (the inner ring of the Pentagon) to watch them pass and welcome them with thunderous applause.

Half a mile they walked through a gauntlet of grateful fellow citizens two and three deep, who reached out to shake the hands of the remaining good arms or grasp the remaining fingers of hands that have given ultimate service.

They walked through us to the main concourse, where they were met by the Army Band and color guard playing martial music for them and where the mall was filled with additional people who swelled the applause. Many of us just called out loudly, "Thank You!" because we didn't know what else could be said; thank you for your service to us. The applause never stopped.

None of them spoke. They just cried. So did we.

It was the closest I have been to Christmas in a long time.

I have a request that I would like make to you - that you consider supporting these wounded soldiers at Walter Reed in a way that would mean so much to them.

The number ONE request at Walter Reed hospital is phone cards. The government doesn't pay long distance phone charges and these wounded soldiers are rationing their calls home. The hospital administrators say they can use an “endless” supply of phone cards so that the wounded soldiers can call their friends and families.

A phone card of any amount, even $5 is greatly appreciated. Wal-Mart has good prices on AT&T cards, Sams Club is even better, if you are a member. Just buy a phone card of any amount and send it to:

Medical Family Assistance Center
Walter Reed Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20307-5001

Please consider letting everyone you know that they can do the same. It’s one way to give American soldiers who have been wounded in battle fighting to keep terrorism from our shores a happier New Year.

AFTER THE OBAMA HICCUP, THE 21ST CENTURY IS AMERICA’S

Anyone here old enough to remember the 1929 crash on Wall Street and the 1933 US exit from the Gold Standard under Franklin Roosevelt?  If so, you'll recall the pervading sense that America had already peaked, its capitalist model overtaken by history.  The Soviets were ascendant and soon would overtake us.

After defeat in Vietnam and the Carter Malaise, it was the Japanese who would triumph.  This time it is supposed to be China and the emerging powers - armed with $9 trillion of combined reserves - who will humble America, pulling the plug on the dollar and the US Treasury market, and ending the era of "exorbitant privilege."

As for China and the chorus of voices from BRICS-land venting indignation at the US over the debt, it is largely humbug.

Taken in the stride of 20th century history, the latest bleatings about America's demise seem more than a little overdone.  Obama will be judged a hiccup of American history, for here is the great salient economic fact of our times.

IN PRAISE OF VULTURES

If you lend money at 5 percent interest for 10 years and then suddenly the borrower announces that he is only going to repay you at 30 cents on the dollar, would you think you have been cheated?

The Argentine government defaulted on its debt a little more than a decade ago, and some of the creditors are still in court trying to get paid. Last Wednesday (11/21), Federal Judge Thomas Griesa of the New York District Court ruled against Argentina, which made world headlines.

Argentine President Cristina Kirchner Fernandez publicly defied the court, saying her government will not pay "one dollar" to creditors she denounced as "vulture funds."

Ms. Kirchner thinks she is heaping abuse on her creditors by calling them vultures.  We should praise them instead -- for it is risk-takers such as them who force corrupt nations to pay their debts.

BLACK AFRICA, BLACK AMERICA, AND CHICAGO PIZZA

Sangha River, Central African Rain Forest.  No one knows how many gorillas there are in this vast untracked jungle.  Researchers estimate as many as 100 to 200,000.  There could be a lot more - no one knows.

To see a family of gorillas up close in the wild, which is what I brought a group of intrepid TTPers here to do, is profoundly memorable.  What had the most impact on me personally was how peaceful and benign the gorillas' lives are.  They eat leaves.  Babies ride on the backs of their mommies.  Kids wrestle and play.  Dad - the giant bull silverback - watches over them protectively.  They have no predators.

The contrast between gorilla life and human life in Africa is overpowering.  For several of the folks with me, this was their first experience of Africa.  They had, of course, heard of poverty here, but to confront it in your face - whether on the streets of a big city or a village in the bush - was inexpressibly shocking.

Our jungle lodge had a deck overlooking the Sangha River, where we would watch the sunset and enjoy a cold beer or gin and tonic.  When our conversation turned to African poverty and hardship, I was asked what I thought as I'd seen so much of it.  I said it made me think of Chicago pizza.
