It was the Keystone Kops version of George Orwell’s dystopian novel of a dictatorship in which the past is rewritten to suit the political masters, words are robbed of their meaning.  “War is peace.” “Freedom is slavery.”  “Ignorance is strength.”

The Justice Department released Monday morning (6/20) a partial transcript of Omar Mateen’s 911 call from the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.  All references to ISIS and Islam were deleted.

“OM: ‘I pledge of allegiance to [omitted]. ‘I pledge allegiance to [omitted] may God protect him [in Arabic], on behalf of [omitted].’”

This effort to drop the killer’s motive down the Memory Hole was hilarious. It wasn’t hard to figure out what was redacted.  Especially since it had been widely reported that Mateen had described himself as a “soldier of Allah” who declared his allegiance to ISIS.

“The purpose of releasing the partial transcript…was to provide transparency, while remaining sensitive to the interests of the surviving victims, their families, and the integrity of the ongoing investigation,” said the Justice Department in its best Orwellian Newspeak.

“Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind,” Orwell said.

That the real reason for the redactions was to deceive Americans about the killer’s motive is made clear by the strenuous efforts of the president and his minions to blame the massacre on Christians, Republicans, the NRA — everyone but radical Islamists.

“Part of the redacting is meant to not give credence to individuals who have done terrorist attacks in the past,” said FBI Special Agent Ron Hopper. “We’re not gonna propagate their violent rhetoric.”

I doubt Agent Hopper actually believes that nonsense.  But if he does, it may explain why Omar Mateen wasn’t on a terror watch list, despite a history of threatening people that began in 5th grade. He was expelled from high school for applauding the 9/11 attacks. He bragged about (mostly imaginary) associations with terror groups, liked to watch ISIS beheading videos.

But after investigating Omar Mateen twice, the FBI found no “derogatory” information about him.

Mateen cased Disney World in April as a possible site for his jihad.  Disney reported his suspicious behavior to the FBI. Evidently that wasn’t derogatory enough to put him back on the terror watch list.

“The most disturbing aspect of recent terror attacks is that the authorities were taken by surprise each time despite advance warning,” said PJ Media columnist Richard Fernandez.

Confidence in the government’s competence was not enhanced when the attorney general said she didn’t know where Mateen’s wife and suspected accomplice is.

Big Brother’s clumsy censorship provoked outrage and ridicule.  By midday, the administration was in full retreat. It was all the attorney general’s idea, the White House said.

“They may not have issued the order but everybody understands under President Obama you are not to make any reference that could possibly indict Islam or radical Islamism in a mass murder,” said columnist Charles Krauthammer.

The president does the Moslem majority no favors by refusing to distinguish between them and those who are trying to kill us.

“ISIS is killing Moslems on a daily basis,” wrote Dean Obeidallah in the Daily Beast.  “We Moslems despise these crazy people more than anyone else does.”

The world’s largest Sunni Moslem group, Nahdlatul Ulama, based in Indonesia, has mounted an international campaign “to spread messages about a tolerant Islam in their respective countries to curb radicalism, extremism and terrorism.”

ISIS “is on the run,” President Obama assures us. But his CIA Director told the Senate Intelligence Committee last week ISIS is more “formidable” than ever, is planning more Paris, Orlando-style attacks.

There’d be no “Islamic State in Iraq and Syria” if – against the advice of his military commanders — the president hadn’t withdrawn all U.S. troops from Iraq, and so botched Syria policy that 51 Foreign Service officers have risked their careers to protest its pusillanimity.

Mr. Obama dismissed ISIS as a “jayvee team.” Intelligence reports were doctored to hide the threat it posed. The Orlando massacre “underscores the urgency of defeating ISIS,” said Defense Secretary Ash Carter. But the president refuses to take effective military action.

Mateen studied religion under an imam with extensive terrorist ties.  He may not have been a “lone wolf.” It would be scarier if he were – if he were motivated to murder simply by ISIS exhortations over the internet.  By refusing even to speak its name, Mr. Obama builds up ISIS in the minds of troubled losers like Omar Mateen.

“A political elite whose national security philosophy is ‘bring the boys home’ has unfortunately imported the enemy ideology home as well,” Mr. Fernandez said.

The Obama Justice Department is the Keystone Kops version of Orwell’s 1984 but just as morally depraved.
