TAKING THE MYSTERY OUT OF PANIC AND ANXIETY

Panic: Of “Pan,” the God of woods and fields who was the source of mysterious sounds that caused contagious,  groundless fear in herds and crowds, or in  people in lonely spots.

—World English Dictionary

At the famous Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C., the outnumbered Athenians, led by their brilliant general Miltiades, took the Persians completely by surprise, sending them into a fit of terror thought to have been brought on by the god Pan—a panic—leading to a remarkable victory.

The Athenians lost 192 men to Persia’s 6,400.

Panic and panic attacks—anxiety that seems to hit you out of the blue—can be extremely debilitating. It can make it difficult to function, and its unexpected nature can lead to a general feeling of anxiety, wondering and never knowing when we might get hit by it.

Though we usually think of panic and anxiety as psychological phenomena, most of the symptoms of panic anxiety are actually physical: dizziness, shortness of breath, hot flashes, chest pain, racing heart, sweating, trembling, choking, nausea, and numbness.

Only three symptoms are psychological: fear of dying, fear of losing control, and feelings of unreality.

That so many symptoms are physical may turn out to be more important that we have thought. This can open up some simple but effective strategies for coping, or even mastering, our panic or anxiety.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY – ON THE MATTERHORN SUMMIT AGAIN WITH MY SON

jw-bw-on-matterhornWhen my son Brandon turned 14, he asked me, “Dad, you climbed the Matterhorn at 14. Could we climb the Matterhorn together now that I’m 14?” It was 1998 and I was 54. I didn’t think I could do it, but his request meant more than the world to me, so I agreed. Each with our own bergführer guide, he breezed up, but it was a real struggle for me.

He made it, my guide didn’t think I could, so after summiting, Brandon came back down to get me. We climbed the last 500 feet together. Thus here we both are on the summit of the world’s most famous mountain. There are no words to come close to expressing what this means to each of us. WHERE AN ANCIENT WONDER ONCE WAS

helios-god-of-the-sunThis is where The Colossus of Rhodes once stood, at the entrance to the Old Harbor of Rhodes. Standing as high as today’s Statue of Liberty – 108 feet from feet to crown – it was of the Greek god of the Sun, Helios. Completed in 280 BC, travelers from all over the Mediterranean flocked to see it – as they did all Seven Wonders of their world.

They marveled at the Great Pyramid of Cheops and the Lighthouse of Pharos at the entrance to Alexandria, both in Ptolemaic Egypt; the massive Tomb of King Mausolus or Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, on the Ionian (western) coast of present-day Turkey; the giant Temple of Zeus at Olympia in mainland Greece; and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon – in addition to The Colossus on the Greek island of Rhodes, now still Greek right off the coast of Turkey.

The Colossus only stood for sixty years, and was then toppled by a great earthquake. One by one, the others were destroyed by earthquakes, floods, fires and other disasters, until only one of the Seven is left – the Great Pyramid, already over 2,000 years old when the other six were built.

All seven sites where the wonders stood are worth visiting today. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #132 Photo ©Jack Wheeler)

SKARA BRAE

skara-brae

North of Scotland are the Orkney Islands. On a windswept bluff above the North Atlantic, archaeologists have unearthed an intact Neolithic village of farmers and cattle herders that’s 5,000 years old (3200 BC) – centuries older than the Pyramids of Egypt. Their homes had beds, chairs, cupboards, flush toilets, running water, cozy, warm, and comfortable.

What you see here is just one section of the village. What I found particularly interesting was this sign at the entrance to the site.

reasons-to-settle-in-skara-brae

These villagers enjoyed a warmer climate than today, more fertile land. Skara Brae is a 5,000 year-old refutation of the Global Warming Hoax. If you ever get to Scotland, be sure the Orkneys are on your itinerary. Skara Brae is only one of the places you’ll find fascinating. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #210 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

SURREALISM IN CENTRAL ASIA

pearl-of-shing-lake It only looks surreal – as so much of Central Asia can be.  That’s why it’s one of the most magically entrancing parts of our planet. In a hidden valley high in the mountains of Tajikistan there is a stepping-stone series of lakes called The Seven Pearls of Shing.  This is one of them at early sunrise.

The number of magically surrealistic-yet-real sights and experiences like this throughout Central Asia, be they in nature, in Silk Road history, in culture or with welcoming people everywhere, are as innumerable as they are unforgettable.

You owe it to yourself to at least browse through past photos of The Heart of Central Asia expedition so you can immerse yourself in imagining being there for real. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #259 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

THE WORLD’S MOST UNIQUE BIRD

hoatzinThis is a Hoatzin. I took this picture in the Amazon jungles of Colombia, its native habitat. It has no genetic relationship to any other bird, and thus has its own family, the Opisthocomidae, and its own suborder, the Opisthocomi. Extensive DNA-sequencing demonstrates that “the hoatzin is the last surviving member of a bird line that branched off in its own direction 64 million years ago, shortly after the extinction event that killed the non-avian dinosaurs.”

The Hoatzin is the Dinosaur Bird, the only bird on earth directly descended from the dinosaurs. It makes weird noises – grunts, hisses, groans and croaks – no melodious birdsongs. It emits an awful smell due to its fermentation digestive system, and tastes just as awful so no one hunts it for food. Yet it is distinctively pretty in a hyper-funky way. Spend enough time exploring the Amazon, and you may be lucky to see one. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #186 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

TRUMP OFFICIALLY CLASSIFIES LIBERAL WOMEN AS TERRORIST ORGANIZATION

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In remarks delivered from the Oval Office on Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced that he had officially classified liberal women as a terrorist organization.

At the president's direction, the State Department had designated the notorious hate group as domestic terrorists under federal statute 18 U.S.C. § 2331(5) because of the group's involvement in acts dangerous to human life that are intended to intimidate or coerce the civilian population by posting about it on Instagram.

"They're nasty, dangerous people, these women," Trump said. "And not just any women, they're liberal. The worst kind of women, if you can believe it. Absolutely terrible. I've never seen such bad people."

In his statement, Trump referenced the ongoing trial of Lindsay Clancy, who murdered her three children. "They support this woman and bully anyone who doesn't agree with them. That's textbook terrorism," Trump said. "And I will not stand for it. So we're going to bomb them all. We're going to bomb them more than we've ever bombed Iran, and let me tell you, we bombed Iran a lot. There isn't even an Iran anymore, to tell you the truth. They say there is, but there isn't. It's gone. And these liberal women are going to be gone too."

Democratic lawmakers publicly rebuked the president's statements, arguing that liberal women make up the foundation of their entire party. "Trump is attacking a whole group of people who kill their own children," said Senator Chuck Schumer. "I can't think of anything more hateful. He's the real terrorist."

At publishing time, President Trump had dispatched a naval aircraft carrier to Plymouth, Massachusetts, to prepare for military action against a terrorist cell of liberal women gathered outside a courthouse.

HALF-FULL REPORT 08/21/26

I hope you’ve already read Monday’s Archive this week: The Fatal Flaw In The Democrats’ Marxist Nazi Fascism. Written just after the Dem theft of the presidency in November 2020, it described what the Democrat Party was becoming – which it fully has in 2026.

This is most revoltingly typified by the Dems’ overt Nazi Antisemitism, pardon the redundancy.  Thus the video above, the brilliance of Jewish humor at its best, ridiculing AOC morphing into a cockroach and Tucker Carlson into a rat, Greta Thunberg dissolving into sand, Hitler becoming Turkey’s Islamofascist Dictator Erdogan, while making it clear JDS (Jewish Derangement Syndrome) and “Free Palestine” Nazism are pathological.

And the warning is clear too. The US is headed towards becoming like the UK today should the Dems take the House and Senate in the Midterms.   But the HFR has good and hopeful news on that.  And fun – like the news on Fun Facts With Bacon.  So don’t be bashful – jump right on in.  Let’s go!

THE FATAL FLAW IN THE DEMOCRATS’ MARXIST NAZI FASCISM

Hitler, Mao, Mussolini, Stalin, Lenin

[This Monday’s Archive was originally written on November 25, 2020, shortly after the Democrat theft of the Presidency. Frankly, it is one of the coolest and most prescient articles ever in TTP.  I guarantee you’ll agree, and when you read it, be thinking of who’s up on the Dem 2028 leaderboard – a childless brainless bartendress, a Jihadist Ugandan Moslem, a Michigan IslamoNazi, Miss Loser Kneepads of 2024? Who indeed. Change some names, this could have been written today. Enjoy…]

Let’s be clear:  The Democrat Party has gone full Marxist Nazi Fascist.

They mean to eliminate our Constitution and Bill of Rights, such as the freedom of speech, press, assembly, and religion. They have already eliminated due process, free and fair elections, and the democratic legitimacy of government in America.

They mean to impose upon all Americans a totalitarian submission to them equal to that of Soviet Russia, Communist Cuba, Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, and Communist China.  They mean to commit genocide upon “white supremacists” – meaning all whites but themselves.

Yet there is a fatal flaw in their plan.  Here’s the thought experiment to expose it.

ENERGY DOMINANCE: AMERICA’S NEW SHALE REVOLUTION TRANSFORMS OIL & GAS

Perhaps you’ve heard.

The same experts who told you America and the world were reaching “peak oil” — the point at which production supposedly must drop forever — have decided we’re now at “peak fracking.”  Why?

Because they lack the imagination needed for innovation.

Fortunately, ExxonMobil does not. It’s shredding their argument. It’s about to blow U.S. production sky high.

Get ready. There’s a lot of opportunity in that.

For most of my lifetime, all we heard was “peak oil,” which (you benighted souls must understand) was “settled science.” The obvious arguments to the contrary — that rising prices drive innovation, and that regulation is its enemy — were laughed off.

I know:  I made those arguments. Long before there was any such thing as fracking.

WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING IN IRAN?

What’s going on with Iran, or rather, what’s next with Iran?

We’ve gone through six or seven iterations of we’re at war, we’re negotiating, we’re at war, we’re negotiating, we’re at war.

So, about 75% of the so-called war that began on Feb. 28 of this year has been negotiations.

About 25% has actually been kinetic action. And I think that’s obscured a little bit what we’re doing in Iran. We’re not passive when we’re negotiating.

What [President Donald] Trump is doing right now, the Trump administration, is very similar to what the North did as it started the Civil War. They were not sure how to deal with the South because they’d have to invade it, and it was the size of Europe.

So, Winfield Scott came up with the idea of an Anaconda Plan, named after the snake, a python-like snake of Latin America, that would squeeze the South.

In other words, they would occupy the Mississippi River and cut off their western approaches to trade and commerce.

The battlefront in the North would cut them off from the industrial cities of the North, and then they would blockade Charleston, Savannah, Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans, and they would not be able to export cotton nor import manufactured goods, especially weaponry.

Now, it was very slow because, in those days, there was not an international banking system that you could freeze accounts or you could isolate a whole area or region economically, or, I should say, financially.

But it did work.

THE DSA’S ONGOING LOVE AFFAIR WITH A BUTCHER

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) marked the centenary of Fidel Castro’s birth by attempting to resurrect one of the bloodiest dictators of the twentieth century as a champion of humanity.

In an official statement, the DSA praised Castro as an “organizer, a fighter” and a “stalwart symbol of anti-imperialist struggle.

It accused Secretary of State Marco Rubio of committing “genocide” against the Cuban people, demanded his prosecution for “crimes against humanity”, and blamed the United States for the devastation created by nearly seven decades of communist dictatorship.

This was not an impetuous social media post from an errant intern. It was a considered declaration of allegiance to the totalitarian regime Castro built and his successors still operate.

Stone’s Rule applies here: when the left invokes genocide, examine whose firing squads actually operated at dawn.

LEADERSHIP CRISIS – OR FOLLOWERSHIP CRISIS – OR BOTH?

Spend five minutes on social media and you’ll discover America suffers from an epidemic of terrible leaders.

Politicians are corrupt, CEOs are exploitative, pastors are compromised, police chiefs are incompetent, university presidents are ideologues.

Apparently we’ve managed to elect, hire, appoint, or promote the worst human beings in recorded history.

What remarkable luck! Maybe… or maybe we’re thinking about it myopically. I’ve become convinced that America doesn’t primarily have a leadership crisis, but a followership crisis, too.

Leadership has become the political equivalent of a piñata. Everybody enjoys taking a swing at it. Followers, meanwhile, somehow escape all responsibility, as if institutions simply malfunction on their own. They don’t.

Institutions reflect the incentives created by the people inside them.

Politicians keep making outrageous promises because voters reward outrageous promises.

Cable news keeps manufacturing panic because panic keeps ratings high.

Social media influencers keep posting intellectual junk food because millions of us consume it like it’s Thanksgiving dinner.

Markets generally produce what people repeatedly buy.

Politics is no different.

BEYOND VITAMINS AND MINERALS

We’ve spent the last weeks going over Durk and Sandy’s Multivitamin formula that they produced through LifePriority (called LifeGuard and LifeShield) because this is the foundation.

I know from personal experience, as you probably do, that throwing remedies at symptoms isn’t very effective. I’d see an ad, read an article, and go buy the hype and take it faithfully – and it was just money down the toilet.

The thing is, I’m not a scientist. Chemistry was the only class I couldn’t get an A in – I didn’t even come close. And I went to my first college on a voice scholarship – I wasn’t even science-adjacent.

But Skye was a scientist. And human health was his goal. And he said that if he couldn’t do anything else – this foundation would not only keep him alive, it would allow him to thrive. It did, too. He was strong and vital right up until his heart broke and he lost interest in life.

There’s two lessons here – follow his health advice, and give yourself multiple reasons to live.

HOW TO AVOID UNNECESSARY CRISES

I’m used to hearing from people in crisis. As a psychotherapist and life coach, it’s part of my job. It may be a crisis in a marriage, a crisis at work, a financial crisis… There are many places for crises to wreak havoc in our lives.

Some crises are unavoidable. We control only so much of what happens in our lives, and sometimes life throws hardship, tragedy, or deeply chaotic circumstances our way.

I don’t make light of or gloss over the realities of life; but I do make it my business to help people to avoid unnecessary troubles, and there is one thing that we can do to prevent some of the more predictable crises of life:

Make and hold your positive commitments all the way, without reservation.

It’s no mystery that making solid commitments is central to a happy, successful life. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said, “At the moment of commitment, the universe conspires to assist you.” Pat Riley said, “There are only two options regarding commitment. You’re either in or you’re out. There’s no such thing as life in-between.” And then there are the famous words of Yoda to Luke Skywalker in the movie, The Empire Strikes Back — “Do, or do not. There is no try.”

There are so many great quotes and sayings about commitment that it’s easy for the profound truth to get lost in the platitudes. Today we’re going to ground this abstract concept into a tangible strategy for real-life results.
