THE EIFFEL AT NIGHT

eiffel-at-nightThe Eiffel Tower is especially impressive at night. Taking the elevators to the first, second, and finally the third platform on top with the girders lit up against the black of night makes you gape at the herculean engineering achievement of Gustav Eiffel.

It’s overwhelming that it took only 26 months to build – from the start on January 28, 1887 to the celebration of its completion on March 31, 1889.

The Eiffel was built for the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the 1789 French Revolution, and of the century of scientific progress and the Industrial Revolution since. It may seem bizarre that it was bitterly opposed by hundreds of Paris’ artistic and intellectual elite, who publicly condemned it as “a giddy, ridiculous tower dominating Paris like a gigantic black smokestack… stretching like a blot of ink the hateful shadow of the hateful column of bolted sheet metal.”

Too bad for them, for The Eiffel was quickly embraced by Parisians as a beloved symbol of their city, while it has gone on to be one of the world’s most epically famous monuments.

Rebel and were here in Paris with our son Brandon on Thanksgiving last year. I took this picture on that night. Should you ever be in Paris, be sure to visit the Eiffel – all the way to the top! – at night. The experience is simply glorious. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #240 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

WHAT HAPPENS TO IRAN WHEN KHAMENEI IS GONE

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is 86 years old and in ill health. Western intelligence believes he had prostate cancer in 2014 and, most recently, a severe bowel obstruction in 2022. In public, he has appeared to be weak and tired at times. Health rumors were flying after Khamenei didn't appear in public in the immediate aftermath of the U.S. attacks on Iran in June.

It doesn't take much to get tongues wagging in Iran about the mental and physical state of their Supreme Leader.

Regardless of when he dies, sooner or later, the shape of a post-Khamenei Iran is of intense interest to the U.S. and the world.

The last two years have seen the breaking of Ayatollah Khamenei's power and the weakening of the regime he leads. The events that have transpired during the Gaza War will have an enormous bearing on what Iran will look like after Khamenei dies.

MAKING FRIENDS IN ANTARCTICA

rh-and-elephant-sealThis is my wife Rebel relaxing with a native of Antarctica while on a visit to the Palmer Science Station there. Getting up close and personal with Antarctic wildlife is so easy as they have no fear of us at all, be they seals, elephant seals, or penguins.

Better not get too close to male elephant seals in domination combat, however, as they can weigh up to 7,000 pounds. And steer clear of full grown leopard seals, which are apex predators weighing over 1,000 pounds. No worries, though, for Rebel with this young fellow. Experiencing Antarctica is always a memorable adventure. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #94 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

FLASHBACK FRIDAY – EVEREST NORTH FACE

north-face-of-everestMy first Everest expedition was in October, 1987. I took this photo climbing above the Rongbuk Monastery. The enormous North Face of Mount Everest is entirely in Tibet. The summit at 8,848 meters/29,029 feet is in the jet stream with the plume flowing left along the Northeast Ridge, the climbing route of Mallory and Irvine in 1924.

Mallory’s body was found on the North Face in 1999. Irvine’s remains were discovered below Mallory’s in 2024. The greatest mystery in all mountaineering is if they reached the summit before falling during descent.

On the back side of the ridge is the Kangshung Face, also in Tibet. On the right side is the West Ridge, the border between Tibet and Nepal. At the right time of year, the setting sun turns the whole North Face bright pink. At any time of year on a clear day like this, you are witnessing one of the most magnificent sights our planet has to offer. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #105 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

COURTSHIP IN THE GALAPAGOS

frigatebirdThe male Magnificent Frigatebird has a flap of loose bright red skin on his neck called a “gular sac.” During mating season, they huff and puff, filling it with air to blow it up like a balloon. They then parade around showing off for the ladies, for the bigger the red balloon, the more the ladies are aroused. Size matters, even in the Galapagos.

This is only one of many courtship displays among the birds and animals of these extraordinary islands. No wonder the Galapagos are called “evolution’s laboratory.” (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #199 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

TASMANIA’S MOUTH OF HELL

mouth-of-hellOn the south coast of Australia’s island state of Tasmania, there is a huge sea cave the aboriginal Tasmanians called The Mouth of Hell for the shrieking and moaning the waves and wind made emitting from it. Boatsmen prefer to enter it to this day protected by a cross on their fishing boat’s bow.

The wild beauty and mystery of Tasmania is absolutely extraordinary. At 35,000 square miles, it is the size of Maine with a population of less than half a million. Towns like Hobart and Launceston are charming, but the magic is in the uninhabited wilderness that makes up much of the island as a hiker’s paradise. That and a momentous coastline almost beyond belief.

If you’re ever in Oz, especially Melbourne, don’t miss the chance to explore Tasmania. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #150 Photo ©Jack Wheeler)

MAURITANIA FISH MARKET

mauritanias-fish-market-at-seaGo down to the Atlantic coast beach of Mauritania’s capital Nouakchott at sunset, and you’ll see a very unusual fish market. A fishing boat laden with the day’s catch is ready to come ashore, but the crew is afraid the wind and surf may capsize the boat as they do, losing their catch in the process.

So they float just outside the surf line so buyers with boxes and baskets can wade out to buy the fish right off the boat, and wade back. Only when the boat is empty will the crew attempt to beach it. Just one of this West African country’s intriguing sights.

TIJI — CASTING OUT THE DEMONS

tiji-ceremony

Once a year in the capital of the Tibetan Kingdom of Lo, the medieval walled city of Lo Manthang, the Lo-pa Tibetans hold a ceremony called Tiji (tee-gee), meaning casting out of demons. It’s meant to prevent any demons or malicious spirits from destroying their barley and buckwheat harvests.

Tiji is colorfully spectacular and dramatic, but this is no tourist show – Tiji is a deeply serious religious ritual. The Kingdom of Lo is in a very remote and roadless region of the Himalayas known as Mustang, lying north of the Himalayan giants of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri in Nepal on the border with Chinese-occupied Tibet.

We were privileged to witness it on a Himalaya Helicopter Expedition. We hope to be so privileged again next year. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #238 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

DEM SENATOR: “DEM WOMEN LOOK LIKE DEM MEN AND DEM MEN LOOK LIKE WOMEN”

Congresswoman (D-CT) Rosa DeLauro “If Erectile Dysfunction had a face”
Congresswoman (D-CT) Rosa DeLauro “If Erectile Dysfunction had a face”

There are times when an actual news story – reported by Breitbart on Tuesday (11/25) – belongs in the TTP Humor File.

Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) trashed his fellow Democrats for “not allowing” men to be men or “women to be hot” in a leaked string of text messages condemning his own party for being out-of-touch with everyday Americans.

His unidentified texter with whom he was corresponding responded with a photo of Rosa DeLauro’s face (above) captioned “IF ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION HAD A FACE.” Then added “This is how the world views many of them.”

To which Gallego replied, “They aren’t wrong!” And replied further, “Dem women look like Dem men and Dem men look like women.”

While Gallego’s GOP senatorial colleagues are enjoying and praising his blunt honesty, his fellow Dems are in unglued apoplectic fury.

Ruben evidently couldn’t care less. As of today, there is no mention of his leaked texts whatever on his X page: https://x.com/SenRubenGallego.

The episode is delightfully hilarious – notwithstanding the fact that Dems engaged in massive cheating to steal the election from Kari Lake last November.

WHAT DO YOU SEE HERE?

boy-in-pyongyang-nature-park-streamA young boy playing among rocks on a stream, yes. But where? I took this photo in a nature park in Pyongyang, North Korea.

Gives you a different perspective, doesn’t it? This young North Korean boy, how so innocently playing amidst beautiful streams and waterfalls, has no future except to grow up to be a human robot in subjection to a tyranny. He has no idea of the fate in store for him. That’s why, for me, this is one of the saddest pictures I have even taken.

Perhaps he will escape from his political prison, but the odds are gravely against him. Life does have its somber moments. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #244 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

THE AMAZIGH

amazighThey call themselves Amazigh – meaning “the unconquered” – who are the original people of Morocco having lived there for over 12,000 years. You’ve heard of them as Berbers, a name they find offensive. Another people you’ve heard of are the Lapps, the reindeer-herders of far northern Scandinavia, who call themselves Saami.

Astoundingly, they are directly related, for both are descended from the same stock of Cro-Magnon Ice Age hunters in Western Europe that split in two 15,000 years ago – one moving thousands of miles far north, the other thousands of mile south crossing the Gibraltar Strait to North Africa. Geneticists know this because the Amazigh and Saami share the same mitochondrial DNA haplogroup U5b1b. (See Saami and Berbers – An Unexpected Mitochondrial DNA Link, American Journal of Human Genetics, March 2005.)

So when you visit Morocco and meet a gentleman like that pictured above amidst a display of spectacular Amazigh artwork, you’ll know what incredible history resides within him. (Glimpses of Our Breathtaking World #242 photo ©Jack Wheeler)

CLARENCE THOMAS GENTLY EXPLAINS TO KBJ THAT NOT ALL BLACK PEOPLE ARE MENTALLY DISABLED, JUST HER

WASHINGTON, D.C. — After Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson claimed in court today that all black people are mentally disabled, Justice Clarence Thomas gently informed her that it's actually just her.

Not wanting to embarrass Jackson in front of the rest of the court, Justice Thomas waited for a brief recess to explain.

"I don't know how to say this best, Ketanji, but not all black people are mentally disabled. It's just you," said Thomas. "You having an exceptionally low IQ has absolutely nothing to do with your skin color, Ketanji. You're just an idiot. I know this is hard for you to understand... I mean, of course it is, you're mentally handicapped."

Onlookers reported Jackson was stunned by the news, shocked to learn that not all black people are mentally disabled. She sullenly closed the Leapfrog tablet she had been playing Sesame Street puzzles on, before hurling it at the wall in rage. Justice Thomas, however, managed to lift her spirits with a brief game of peek-a-boo.

At publishing time, Justice Thomas had been forced to have the same conversation with Justice Sotomayor about Hispanics.

HALF-FULL REPORT 10/10/25

Rebuilding Order

The price of gold, government shutdowns, and global conflicts are signals of a deeper struggle between order and disorder.

From yesterday’s collapse of the USSR to this morning’s  Gaza ceasefire, from Trump’s battle against bureaucratic chaos to Japan’s “Iron Lady” restoring confidence, the world is at a turning point.

Truth is reclaiming the field while both citizens and leaders are driving out the agents of disorder. Systems are being repaired, virtue is being rewarded, and civilization is standing firm.

Chaos is losing, truth is winning, and the world is reclaiming its order and vibrancy.

THE ENGLISH GODFATHER OF PALESTINIAN TERRORISM

The Grand Mufti meets Hitler, Berlin, November 28, 1941
The Grand Mufti meets Hitler, Berlin, November 28, 1941

[This Monday’s Archive was originally published on December 15, 2003.  Today, the psychosis of Nazi Antisemitism has arisen once again as a moral stain on Western Civilization.  “Pro-Palestinian” protestors rampaging in our cities and those in Western Europe need to be recognized as Neo-Nazis whose waving of Palestine flags is an excuse for hatred of Jews.  Here is the story of their ideological founder, an Englishman over 100 years ago.]

TTP, December 15, 2003

The founder of the Palestinian terrorist movement was Amin al-Husseini (1897-1974).

As Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, he organized Arab rampages killing Jewish settlers in Palestine throughout the 1920s, and formed an alliance with the Nazi Party of Germany in the 1930s.

He met with Adolph Hitler in Berlin in November 1941 to encourage him to slaughter Jews in Europe so they couldn’t escape to settle in Palestine, and ordered Arab families to flee Israel upon independence so Arab armies could invade in 1948.

As one of the founders of Palestine Liberation Organization, he mentored his nephew Rahman Abdul Rauf al-Qudwa al-Husseini, and turned the leadership of the PLO over to him.

His nephew assumed the alias of Yasser Arafat.

But just how did Amin al-Husseini become Grand Mufti?

BARI: THE ANTI-WOKE SUPERSTAR SHAKING UP AMERICAN JOURNALISM

As America’s political and media elite partied in Washington, DC, following Donald Trump’s inauguration at the start of the year, one event in particular drew the great and the good.

The Free Press, an online news publication founded by outspoken US journalist Bari Weiss, teamed up with Uber and Elon Musk’s X for a party that played host to famous faces, including the Republican senator Ted Cruz, controversial Irish UFC star Conor McGregor and former prime minister Liz Truss.

The star-studded bash was a coup for Weiss, the former New York Times journalist who in recent years has become one of the hottest names in US media.

Now, though, her star – and her fortune – have risen further after Hollywood giant Paramount inked a deal to buy The Free Press for a reported $150m price tag.

The takeover embeds a news startup at the heart of one of America’s largest media empires.

More controversially, however, the deal will also see Weiss take up the role of editor-in-chief of CBS News in a move that could herald the biggest overhaul in the Paramount-owned network’s near-100-year history.
