HIDDEN CHINA II

HIDDEN CHINA II

A Jack Wheeler Adventure
Saturday February 15 - Saturday March 01, 2014
$7750

[Hani4 OMG]

Last September, we had our first adventure to Hidden China.  It was absolutely extraordinary.  Breathtakingly memorable.

Yet China is a gigantic country - far bigger than the US minus Alaska - with a multitude of hidden wonders, way too many to see in just one excursion.

Further, you have to pick the right season.  In winter, it's freezing cold in most of China - but down south, in the province of Yunnan bordering Vietnam, Laos, Burma, and Tibet the weather is delightful.

So it is here we are having our next adventure into the China that is unbelievable and unknown: Hidden China II.

In many ways, Yunnan is China's most stunning and fascinating region.  It has a multitude of incredibly colorful ethnic cultures that are not Han Chinese and have preserved their traditions.  And it has places that will completely blow you away - like Tiger Leaping Gorge, the Dongchuan Redlands, or the thousand year-old Hani Rice Terraces pictured above, clearly one of the great wonders of the world.

We go in February, the best time to see them - and a lot more. Note, however, this is an adventure.  We stay in the best hotels and dine in the best restaurants when we can - but that's not always.  We're going to places where tourists aren't.  And our schedule is demanding so we can see them all in two weeks.  Let's get started.  And yes, the pictures are real.

THE OBLIGATION TO DISOBEY

In a number of cases, officials of the Obama administration appear to have given unlawful orders during the shutdown, such as to put up barricades to prevent people from going to nonfederal attractions such as Mount Vernon, and keeping open nonessential activities like federally owned golf courses that serve the "well-connected."

The Uniform Code of Military Justice Section 892, Article 92 makes it clear that military personnel have an obligation and a duty to obey only lawful orders and, indeed, have an obligation to disobey unlawful orders, including orders by the president that do not comply with the code.

The moral and legal obligation of the military is to the U.S. Constitution and not to those who would issue unlawful orders, especially if those orders are in direct violation of the Constitution and the code. Civilian employees also have an equal obligation to disobey unlawful orders.

The illegitimate orders that government workers followed during the shutdown might seem like minor infractions, but those who committed them should think about where they would draw the line.

Chapter Twenty-Eight: THE FATE OF MONTEZUMA

The Jade Steps

Chapter Twenty-Eight:  The Fate of Montezuma

Cortez moved swiftly to commandeer the ships and supplies of Narvaez's fleet.  Under the command of Francisco de Lugo, the ships were brought to Villa Rica, everything of use brought ashore, and the great quantities of wine, bacon, flour, cassava bread and other perishables carefully stored.

He also moved quickly to merge the men and commands of Narvaez's men with his own.  He detached Juan Velasquez de Leon and 120 men, 100 of whom were Narvaez men, to explore the coast to the north of Villa Rica and establish a colony near the river Panuco.  He directed Diego de Ordaz to lead the same sort of contingent south for a colony near the river Coatzacoalco.

He placed Rodrigo Rangel in charge of Villa Rica, made sure Narvaez and Salvatierra were securely imprisoned there, and ordered Gonzalo de Sandoval to make all preparations for the remainder of the command to return to Tenochtitlan.

Then everything changed when Malinali brought one of Narvaez's officers, Botello Puerto de Plata, to Cortez.  "Señor de Plata has disturbing news, my Captain," she told him.  Cortez had been hearing about him.  A hidalgo from Santander on the north coast of Castille, he had become a Latin scholar while studying in Rome, and had a reputation for being a prestidigitador, a magician who could predict the future.

"Señor Cortez, I must warn you to leave here immediately," de Plata announced.  "The officer you left in command at Tenochtitlan, Pedro de Alvarado, and all your men there are in grave danger.  The Aztecs are making war upon them, they are attempting to climb into their quarters with ladders, and wish to kill them all.  You must return there quickly."

CHOLESTEROL IS GOOD FOR YOU

If you are reading this before breakfast, please consider having an egg, yolk included.

Any day now, the US government will officially accept the advice to drop cholesterol from its list of "nutrients of concern" altogether.  A sixty-year torrent of bad dietary advice is coming to an end.

The evidence has been building for years that eating cholesterol does not cause high blood cholesterol.  It's not some vile poison but an essential ingredient of life, which makes animal cell membranes flexible and is the raw material for making hormones, like testosterone and estrogen.

Your liver manufactures most of the cholesterol found in your blood from scratch, and adjusts for what you ingest, which is why diet does not determine blood cholesterol levels. Lowering blood cholesterol by changing diet is all but impossible.

From the very first, the studies that linked the ingestion of cholesterol and saturated animal fats to cardiovascular disease were not just flawed, but fraudulent.

HALF-FULL REPORT 05/15/15

What is going on around here?  Whatever the Pubs are drinking on Capitol Hill, they need to keep drinking it.  This week, we present the House of Good News.

There are four examples, ending with Speaker John Boehner yesterday (5/14) showing the world how to deal with The Lying Swine.  You're gonna love it...

More good news in the Karma Payback department:  Tuesday (5/12) - Obama Accused of Being Sexist by Chairwoman of NOW...

In the I'm-As-Shocked-As-Claude-Rains department is this poll released on Monday (5/11): Democrats now view socialism as favorably as they view capitalism. As? As??

This is a fun and hopeful HFR - which is why a high school kid is the Hero of the Week.  We worry about America's future with good reason.  But there are also good reasons for optimism as well.  Here's a great example...

And there's another example of American ingenuity and insight that you'll find fascinating, funny, and mind-bending thoughtful.  Here's The Bike You Can't Ride...

THE WORLD ECONOMY’S PROBLEM IS TOO MUCH GOVERNMENT

This past week, the International Monetary Fund again lowered its global economic forecast for 2015.

The Federal Reserve had forecast the U.S. economy to grow about 4 percent near the beginning of each year for the last five years. But during each year, the Fed was forced to reduce its forecast until it got to the actual number of approximately 2 percent. Other government agencies have been making equally bad forecasts.

These mammoth errors clearly show that the forecast models the official agencies use are mis-specified and contain incorrect assumptions.

Government economic policymakers have been trying to solve a problem of too much government spending, taxing and regulation by inappropriately using monetary policy, which has not and cannot solve the fundamental problems. It is like using a hammer rather than a shovel to dig a hole.

There is only one non-destructive solution to the global econoomy's woes.

OBAMA’S PLAN FOR A FASCIST AMERICA

Ha Long Bay, Northern Vietnam.  This place is so spectacularly beautiful there's no wonder why it's a World Heritage Site.

Americans are welcome now in Vietnam, where so many people speak English because it's required to learn it in school as a second language.  Vietnamese have embraced capitalism with a vengeance, even while they are ruled by the same Commie Party we fought in the 60s, the Hammer & Sickle flies everywhere and Ho Chi Minh is pictured on their currency.

The days of America being Hanoi's enemy are long gone.  China is the enemy today as it has been for over two thousand years of Vietnamese history, against which Hanoi needs America as an ally.  The tides of history ebb and flow.  America's greatest enemy today is not external but within.

A far more mortal danger to our country than Putin Russia, Chicom China, or Reconquista Mexico is a Hate America White House with the clear goal of creating a Fascist America.

Government control of all of our major institutions and industries is taking place right before our eyes in broad daylight.  If we have any chance of reversing it, we must begin by identifying exactly what is going on.  The first step is to call what is going on by its accurate name:  fascism.

The Left loves to use the term as a pejorative sneer for anything lefties don't like.  But as an economic theory it has a specific meaning.

Socialism is government ownership of businesses and industries, with everyone in the economy - workers, managers, executives - being an employee of the State.  In Castro's Cuba until recently, even shoeshine boys had to belong to a state cooperative.

Fascism, by contrast and far more dishonestly, is government control of ostensibly private business and industry, the owners and executives of which can do nothing without bureaucratic regulatory approval.  This is the economy Zero is determined to achieve.  He is doing so with astonishing rapidity - and with Chicago gangsterism and corrupt thuggishness, hallmarks of any fascist regime.

So rapid and thuggishly thorough it leaves the Marxist agenda of the Frankfurt School's "march through the institutions" - both economic and cultural - of the 20th century in the dust.  It is a 21st century blitzkrieg of fascism.  Let's itemize it.

REVOLUTIONARY CONSTITUTIONALISM AND DECLARATIONS OF DEFIANCE

At the end of 2014, it is clear that our constitutional order is breaking down.

Whether by Alinskyite design, the cowardice of the GOP Elite, or a sense of hopelessness by people in general, the barbarians are at the constitutional gates and are rabidly tearing them down.

Barbarians celebrating the murder of two NYPD police are marching down 5th Avenue in New York today (12/24), while barbarians in the Zero White House have issued over one thousand two hundred unconstitutional "regulations" to further suffocate our freedom in just the last two weeks.  Our Barbarian-in-Chief rules by executive decree without any concern for the Constitution he swore to uphold.

There is no normal way to fix this.  Our country's political and cultural situation has become so dire that only a radical, indeed revolutionary fix will do.  This can be done, however, without the violence of a Second American Revolution, but constitutionally, fully within America's founding legal framework.

That is, rather than another Revolution, what we need is a revolutionary interpretation of the Constitution, "revolutionary" only in the context of how far we have strayed from its original meaning.  Here's how to go about it.

THE ILLUSION OF PERFECT HAPPINESS

There is a great misunderstanding about what it means to live a happy life, and it can be summed up in the popular symbol of the smiley face.

Now, I like to smile. I love feeling that kind of glowing, delighted state of emotional bliss. It's wonderful to be full of joy and love and laughter. But feeling those things doesn't in and of itself make for a happy life; and just because we don't happen to feel them in the moment doesn't mean we are unhappy.

In fact, if simply feeling those emotions all the time was what constituted happiness, and if Aristotle was correct in saying that, "Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence," then it would be a simple matter to find the right combination of drugs that would perpetually bathe our neurons with joyful chemicals, and we could all be perpetually happy and fulfill the aim and end of our existence.

But this smiley face view of happiness is a mistake. Here's why.

HOW TO WORRY EFFECTIVELY

All of us think about what's going to happen in the future.  The more accurately we can estimate what is likely to happen, the more effective we can be in navigating the course ahead.

There is a downside, however. Since we can anticipate what may happen in the future, this also allows us to worry about the future. And we tend to give our imaginations more credit than they deserve.

Anticipating events to come so that we can take effective action is invaluable. But worry is a different animal; worry is what we do when we don't know what to do, when we don't have enough information, or when events are outside of our control.  Here's how to worry more effectively.

THE WORLDWIDE PROBLEM OF TOO MUCH GOVERNMENT

The International Monetary Fund announced this past week that it expects world GDP growth to be only 2.9 percent this year. This is below the 3.2 percent in 2012, which was below the 30-year average of about 3.6 percent, and far below the one-of-the-best recent four-year periods, from 2004 to 2007, when it averaged 5.1 percent.

The differences may seem small, but the rate of GDP growth determines how quickly global poverty declines and real incomes rise.

Real global growth has declined owing to government spending growing faster than the private sector in much of the world, mounting environmental and financial regulation whose costs far exceed the benefits, and monetary policies forcing misallocation of capital in the major economies.

In other words, what's wrong with America's economy is not unique -- it's what's wrong with much of the entire world.

THESE ARE THE BOYS OF PONT-DU-HOC

On June 6th, 1984, the greatest president of modern times, Ronald Reagan, delivered this magnificent speech at Pont-du-Hoc, on the 40th anniversary of the D-Day Normandy Landing.  Today is the 69th anniversary of that unparalleled example of American courage.

TO THE SHORES OF TRIPOLI

Folks, here I am in the mountains of the Bangladesh-Burma border with Christian tribal people, and I just got word that the permits I've been trying to secure to visit Libya have been approved.

This is serious short notice, for the permits allow me to bring a small group of TTPers to Libya for one week next month:  Saturday, October 20 to Saturday, October 28.

The place is going gangbusters economically, as oil production is now exceeding pre-revolution 2009 levels of 1.6 million barrels a day.  Politically, things are still in flux, as many sectors of society are trying to cooperate in thwarting Islamist efforts to hijack the Libyan Spring.

It's going to be fascinating to watch this playing out first-hand - and in safety.  We'll be well taken care of.

We'll see what's happening in both Tripoli and Benghazi; visit Berber villages up in the Nafusa Mountains, the best-preserved Roman ruins on the planet, and the center of the unique form of moderate Libyan Islam; investigate business opportunities, and see what direction post-Gaddafi Libya is heading.

The hotels are nice, the food is good, the people are friendly, and we are going to have an extraordinary time.  The schedule and details are below.  Appended at the end is A Note on the History of Libya - consider it your initial Libya briefing.

THE DOUBLE-D CASH OPTION

Jack's Double-D strategy - Defund and Disobey - requires positive actions to make it a reality. Here is one simple, safe, costless, and effective step that you can personally take every day:

Pay cash for all small business transactions. This empowers the recipient to decide for himself whether the Federalies deserve any part of that cash income.

This is a zero-cost zero-risk strategy for the payor. When you pay cash to a small business, you empower them to decide for themselves whether to fund the cancer that is devouring America.

This won't work when you purchase from a big business or a chain; if you purchase a case of paper at Staples, their income will be reported whether you pay by credit card, debit card, check, or cash.

The situation is entirely different when you are dealing with a small business. When you purchase a dinner at an independent small business restaurant, pay cash, both for the tip and for the meal. If you pay via plastic or check, there will be a paper trail that will require the wise owner to report the income. If you pay cash, you empower the owner (and the waitress) to defund and disobey.

Chapter Twenty-Seven: “I SHALL CUT OFF CORTEZ’S EARS!”

The Jade Steps
Chapter Twenty-Seven:  "I Shall Cut Off Cortez's Ears!"

Over the next several weeks, the Spaniards marveled at how the Mesheeka accepted the loss of their gods.  Perhaps, they surmised, it was because the Mesheeka had been taught by their priests that if the gods were not fed the blood of human hearts, the sun would not rise and the world would collapse into darkness and chaos.

Day after day, week after week, there were no sacrifices and the sun kept rising.  Maybe the priests were wrong.  Maybe the new gods of the strangers were more powerful than the ones of old.  Malinali heard these whispers, and did her best to encourage these thoughts among the Mesheeka.

Then one afternoon, a worried Orteguilla came to see Malinali.

"Doña Marina, I am afraid Montezuma is plotting something.  He has been having meetings in secret with several of his nobles, which I am not allowed to hear.  He keeps talking about how he must be free of his prison so he can perform the ceremonies of Tlacaxipeualiztli (tlah-kashee-pay-ooh-ah-leesh-tlee).  What does this mean?"

"It means the Aztec month of Tlacaxipeualiztli is about to begin.  Sacrifices must be made to the god Xipe so plants will grow.  Montezuma and the highest nobles must impersonate the gods in a sacred dance wearing a particular costume."

She paused, sighed, and put her hand gently on the young boy's.  "Thank you, Orteguilla, for coming to me and telling me of this.  The costume Montezuma and the nobles wear for the dance is made of human skins, flayed from the bodies of captives.  Tlacaxipeualiztli means The Flaying of Men."
