GEORGIA CAN BE PUTIN’S AFGHANISTAN

Time to stop the hand-wringing about Russia's re-igniting the Cold War by invading Georgia.  Time to start thinking of what a golden opportunity this presents.

First the reality.  Russia, before, during, and after the Soviet Union was and remains a brutal imperialist dictatorship.  The Soviet Union was simply the same old Czarist Russian imperialism with Marxism-Leninism as an ideological rationale.  The fall of the USSR only meant the fall of the rationale.

So Russia is back to where it has always been, with the Russian compulsion for brute force bullying as its way of dealing with the world.  It is no accident, comrades, that  Russians were the Soviets, and it is no surprise whatever that they are behaving like Soviets in Georgia today.

Thus the fundamental reality of how to conduct foreign policy with Russia, however distasteful it may be to the squishes at the State Department chronically afflicted with terminal testicular atrophy:

The only thing Russians in the Kremlin understand and respect is superior force and the willingness to use it against them.  If you don't give them a punch in the mouth and a bloody nose the moment they start to bully you, they will keep bullying you until you start fighting back hard - or you capitulate and obey their orders.

It's either-or, win-lose.  Those are their rules.  The golden opportunity Putin is giving us by invading Georgia is that it gives us the perfect excuse to play by his rules.

THE SECRET STORY OF THE SOVIET PLATES

Yesterday (8/28), the State Department announced it was issuing new diplomatic license plates to the foreign embassies here in Washington.  Since the old design was similar to that of some US states, the new plates' design is supposed to reduce the confusion.

Here is the old/new comparison from the State press release:

diplates

Which gives me an opportunity to tell you the coolest story you ever heard about license plates.  It's about Soviet license plates during the Cold War, and the true name of "The Reagan Doctrine."

The story begins with my getting a phone call in 1985 from a buddy of mine working in the Reagan White House, Dana Rohrabacher (who has been a Congressman, R-CA, since 1988).  The conversation went like this:

REVOLT IN THE AMAZON

Think you could be friends with these fellows?

  xicrin2-sm

Sure you could.  My son Jackson and I had no problem when we visited their village in the Amazon in 2002.  They live in the deepest heart of the Amazon, along a tributary of the Xingu (ching-goo) River.  They call themselves the Xicrin (chick-reen), a branch of the Kayapo tribe.  They made newspaper headlines around the world this week.

During our visit four years ago, the Xicrin asked for our help.  In the middle of a pristine rain forest next to a beautiful river, they said they needed a well for drinking water.  We were incredulous.  They explained that their water was polluted with poison from a huge Brazilian mine on a river that drained into theirs.

That's when I learned about CVRD.

BYE BYE BASHAR

The Syrian-Iranian terror alliance goes back a quarter-century, when Hezbollah was created to wage terror war against American and French forces in Lebanon.

There was a neat division of labor: Syria controlled the territory, and Iran ran the organization. Hezbollah's murderous successes are legendary, from the suicide bombings against the French and American Marine barracks to a similar operation against the American embassy, all in Beirut in 1983, to massive bombings of Jewish targets in Argentina in 1992. That alliance remains intact, and provides the base of the terror war in Iraq today.

Now the Iranians are concerned at signs of cracks in the edifice of the Assad regime. The Assad family's grip on Syria is weakening, and this is welcome news indeed, both for the long-suffering Syrian people and for us.

The Iranians are desperate to keep Assad in power, and Hezbollah armed to the teeth. Should things go the other way, Iran would lose its principal ally in the war against us in Iraq.

A STORY ABOUT SHARING

Computers are so much a part of life. You use them at home and work; maybe you even use a laptop. Chances are your kids have a computer for schoolwork. And of course, you've got a printer.

If this is the kind of setup you have, you may be a candidate for a home network.

THE CHINESE ATTEMPT TO NATIONALIZE CHRISTIANITY

China will redouble its efforts to nationalize Christianity, a senior Chinese official announced on last Thursday (8/07).

"The construction of Chinese Christian theology should adapt to China's national condition and integrate with Chinese culture," Wang Zuoan, director of the State Administration for Religious Affairs, said at a Shanghai forum on the "Sinicization of Christianity," according to Chinese state media.

Gu Mengfei, deputy secretary-general of the Three-Self Patriotic Movement - a state-sanctioned umbrella organization for Protestant churches - elaborated on the initiative. "This will encourage more believers to make contributions to the country's harmonious social progress, cultural prosperity and economic development," Gu said.

As the name implies, the Three-Self Patriotic Movement - which long predates the establishment of the People's Republic of China - has Chinese nationalism at its core.

The Three-Selfs are the three principles of self-support (financial independence from foreigners), self-leadership/governance, and self-propagation (indigenous missionary work).

Nonetheless, the officials' comments last week indicate that the Chinese Communist Party intends to further tighten its grip over Christianity. There are a number of possible targets and motivations for the crackdown.

HALF-FULL REPORT 03/21/14

Who's the Prankster now?

Zero issued his first set of "punitive sanctions" against the Kremlin on Monday (3/17).  They were so wimpy the liberal New York Daily News called him "Putin's Patsy" - denouncing him as "hapless, helpless and hopeless in facing down Russian strongman Vladimir Putin's annexation of Crimea."

The banner headline on Drudge was Russia Laughs at Obama ‘Sanctions' - Calls Him ‘Prankster'.

Yesterday (3/20), Zero issued his second set of sanctions.  Nobody is laughing in the Kremlin today.  That's because they are for real, targeting Putin's Inner Circle - the guys who hold Putin's "personal purse strings."  Right in tandem yesterday, Merkel and the EU announced they were placing asset freezes on these same guys.

As the HFR has been predicting for the last two weeks, the strategy is to bankrupt Putin personally, seize his stash of billions.  That is now underway.

And the Russkie response?  I can't resist adjusting Fox's headline:

THE CRISIS IS COMING, BUT WHO KNOWS WHEN?

The struggle between the productive and the destructive never ends. The productive are those who add more value and wealth than they consume, and the destructive are those who destroy more value and wealth than they create. Will 2014 be a year of production or destruction?

Those private individuals, firms or institutions such as the Federal Reserve and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that make economic forecasts for the United States or the global economy are actually making judgments about the outcomes of the struggles between the productive and the destructive.

The good news is that most people will work hard and honestly to create more wealth for their families in 2014 -- whether they are creating a new business or product, or just doing a really good job. The bad news is that in the United States, individuals and businesses now face $54 billion more in new federal taxes and a torrent of new regulations and rules that, for the most part, make life harder.

THE GOVERNMENT WANTS YOU TO LIVE IN FEAR

There was a shooting two days ago (9/16) in DC. The details are still sketchy as I write this, but it appears that a deranged man decided to kill other people for some reason. In response, the usual talking heads will be debating whether this is actual Terror or merely something like it. But the T-word will be spoken in the same grave way we speak of cancer - a thing to be dreaded above all else.

Certainly this shooting was a horrible, tragic thing - especially for the families involved. But that said, any talk about an "age of terror" is utter drivel.

Terror is NOT worse now than it was before 9/11 - it's just that we've been bombarded with fear for more than a decade, creating a culture-wide residue that poisons every mind it touches. In actual fact, you are eight times more likely to be killed by a SWAT Team cop than a terrorist. Does that mean that we should all have a collective panic attack and beg for anti-SWAT SWAT Teams?

Now here's the truth they don't want you to know: You are taught to fear because fear makes you easy to manipulate. If someone is making you afraid, they're also making you into an easy mark - a sucker.  Our government wants us to live in fear.

Think of how many things people have accepted from governments just because they were afraid. Things like complete online surveillance, crotch searches at airports, random searches on the highways, and so on. Do you think those would have been accepted in 1920? Of course they wouldn't, because people hadn't been sufficiently frightened at that time.

THE WORLD’S MOST PATRIOTIC PEOPLE

Stanley, Falkland Islands.  I was enjoying a pint of the local microbrewery's Peat Cutter Stout at the Globe Tavern when a Falklander on an adjacent bar stool engaged me in conversation.

"Where are you from, mate?" he asked.

"America," I replied.

"You're an American, are you?  Well, I have to tell you, Yank, I think your President Obama is disgusting."

This did not elicit the response he was expecting.  I raised my glass and with a huge smile across my face exclaimed, "I'll drink to that!"

Taken aback, he queried, "You Americans are supposed to believe in freedom. Why do you have a president who won't stand up for ours?"

"Because he won't stand up for our own freedom, much less anyone else's.  His goal in life is to destroy our freedom, not protect it.  He's a fascist interested only in expanding his power, just like the Falklands' enemy Christina Kirchner.  That's why he will side with her and not with you."

He looked at me quizzically, blinked a few times, then asked, "Can I buy you a beer?"

FREEDOM’S BIRTHDAY 2008

[This was originally in To The Point for July 4, 2004. This is the version for 2008.  We at To The Point wish all of you an exceedingly happy Fourth of July.]

July 4th is Freedom's Birthday. My suggestion is, amidst the fireworks and barbeques and flag-waving fun - all of which are great - that you take the time to feel good about America.

Put aside your worries and concerns, your frustrations and fears about what's wrong with America. For one day, forget the negative - put it all in a zip-lock bag, hide it in the back of the freezer, and pretend it doesn't exist.

You travel around the world and you see the remnants of history's great civilizations. You walk through the preserved wreckage of Rome's Imperial Forum or the Acropolis of Ancient Athens and you wonder -- what was it really like to be here when these civilizations were at their peak? You can do that today in Washington DC -- or your hometown.

We Americans are privileged to live in one of history's supreme moments. We Americans are participants in one of history's greatest civilizations in its prime.

Someday in some future epoch, history will have moved on, and there will be distant centuries between that time and the American Era. People will then look upon America as we do upon ancient Egypt or Greece, and will do so with same wonder and awe.

I suggest you look upon America with that wonder and awe now.

THE TTP SUMMER SCHEDULE

Fall, winter, spring, we at To The Point endeavor to have the TTP Weekly Report issued like clockwork - every Friday by noon.  (So it's always pretty crazy Thursdays and Friday mornings!)

Summers are different, this summer especially.  By the time you get this, I'll be off to run a safari in the Serengeti, then to various remote islands in the Indian Ocean.

The good news about this is that you'll learn all kinds of fascinating things about some of the world's weirder places.  The not-so-good news is that many of these places don't have an internet connection.  Which means there's no way to have a regular Weekly Report schedule.

So here's what we'll do:  post articles and columns whenever and as soon as we can throughout each week.  I normally edit every single item posted on TTP - but in my absence, our back-up editors will step up to the plate.

I'll also launch a new feature for To The Point called The Potpourri.

BORIS. BILL, AND MONICA: TROUBLE FOR HILLARY?

Will the saga of the world's most famous fellatrice return to haunt Hillary in 2008?  There's this fascinating whisper making the Washington rounds that says yes.

While convoluted and circumstantial, a number of plugged-in Washingtonians believe it.  The story starts with Boris Yeltsin.

Yeltsin was President of Russia from its emergence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 to 1999.  In October of 2000, part three of his autobiography was published, Midnight Diaries.  In it, there was an astounding revelation:

That in "late 1996," after Bill Clinton's re-election in November, he (Yeltsin) received a highly classified report from his Foreign Intelligence Service (Russian acronym SVR, formerly a branch of the KGB).  Russian intel had learned that the President of the United States was having an affair with an intern named Monica Lewinsky.

This was over a full year before the world learned of the scandal via the Drudge Report internet website on January 19, 1998.  The President of the United States was about to be blackmailed.

FROM AN EMBARRASSMENT TO A CATASTROPHE

Bit by bit we are getting to the inevitable showdown with Iran. This administration, like every other Western government, has hoped against hope that it would not come to this.

President George W. Bush, for reasons good and bad, threw in with the Europeans' phony-negotiation scheme, even though he knew it would fail. Like the others, he hoped that revolution would erupt, and that decisive action on our part would not be necessary.

Like the others, he preferred not to face the hard fact that revolutions rarely succeed without external support. Had Ronald Reagan been around, he would have told W that the democratic revolution that ended the Cold War only finally succeeded when the United States supported it.

WHAT YOU GET IS WHAT YOU SEE WITH MONITORS – plus a Health Warning and Security Update

Monitors are replete with mysterious-looking numbers and formulas. We pretend to understand them, but how much do we really know? Admittedly, until I began looking for a new one - I’m still undecided - I knew less about monitors than any other major part of a computer.

In looking for a new monitor I’ve tried to fill in some of the blanks. I’ll pass the information onto you.
