THE NEXT GREAT ADVENTURE

"Hey, Jack, when's your next expedition and where to?"  That's the question, or variants of it, I'm asked most.  For a while now, I've been frustrating a lot of folks who've been bugging me for an answer because I've been unable to give it.

Now I can.  I've been leading expeditions to remote places in the world for over a third of a century, and during all that time I had a dream of an ultimate way to experience the world, an ultimate set of adventures and expeditions.  Now that dream is coming true.

Suppose you wanted to traverse the entire length of the Nile River, all 4,000 miles from  source (Jinja, Uganda where it exits Lake Victoria) to mouth (Alexandria, Egypt, where it enters the Mediterranean).  Or visit the most exotic, the most untouched islands in the South Pacific or the Indian Ocean.  How would you do it?

You'd have to charter a boat, for a lot of money, and take a lot of time - week upon week, even a month or two.  What if there were a way to do it in days?  Quickly, comfortably, at substantially less cost than a boat charter yet seeing and experiencing more than from the surface of the water?

The world would open up to you in a way impossible before.  That's the dream.  But how?  The answer is...

PHILISTINES AND PALESTINIANS

Responding to Moses in Mecca, TTP member "Marco" has asked about the historical lineage of the ancient Philistines and their connection to modern-day Palestinians after whom they are named.  OK, Marco, here goes.

The origins of the Philistines are unclear.  Genesis 10:14 lists the Pelishtim as among the sons of Ham, shorthand for the Hebrews' traditional enemies which also included Egyptians and Canaanites, while Amos 9:7 claims they come from "Caphtor."

At least two things about them are clear.  They are not aboriginal to the Levant (east coast of the Mediterranean) and they are not Semitic.

THE REAL CIA

[First a note on OBL, as so many of you have asked:  how can the Bin Laden audio tape be real when I said he died last December?  Two comments.  Why do we never get to see this guy?  Why is there never a video like with Zawahiri or Zarqawi?  It's much easier to fake audio than video.  Yet the bottom line now is I don't know.  My sources in Iran are very - very - well placed.  They all swear OBL died early December 2005, and tell me they have been to his grave site.  They are mystified by this tape and doubt it's for real.  But they are checking, and I'll let you know what they know. ---ML]

You just don't get it, but it's all so obvious. I mean, we had to do something, so I set it up."

I had finally gotten through via my broken-down ouija board to my old friend, the late James Jesus Angleton, for many years the head of CIA's counterintelligence operations, and I had asked him about the Mary McCarthy story. I had expected him to be furious at the discovery that a CIA officer was meeting with Washington journalists, contrary to agency policy.

ML: Huh? What's that supposed to mean? You telling me you're responsible for setting up McCarthy's conversations with Dana Priest? You've been dead for a long time, how could you manage that from, uh, where you're at?

LITTLE KNOWN WEB DELIGHTS

The Internet is like what the North Pole and the Moon used to be – a great, unexplored terrain with all sorts of life-changing phenomena, just waiting be discovered, and used for your betterment.

Of course, it depends on how you define ‘betterment.’ For many people that means having the computer spit out a can of Coke because they’re too lazy to get up and fetch one from the fridge themselves.

If you’re in the neighborhood of MIT, you can use your computer to conjure one up.

However, if you want your kids to get fresh air, you might consider the Internet to be the second most useless invention in human history, a close runner up to the TV.

But forget TV: the miracle of the Web is that there are sites that are not only fun, but amazingly useful, too.

THE DEMOCRATS’ WHITE VOTER PROBLEM

Hardly a week goes by without some Democrat Party hack putting finger to iPad and swiping out a screed about the Republican Party's problem with women or minorities.

This time it was Debbie Wasserman Schultz with "The GOP's Woman Problem." Schultz claims that the Republican Party was "rejected again by a bloc of voters that make up more than half of the electorate." That claim is as real as Schultz's hair color.

The Republican Party doesn't have a "woman problem." Romney in 2012 won the votes of white women in every age group; including young women. And Obama lost white women as he did all white voters.

He lost white voters by 59% to 39%. He lost white voters of every age and gender. His loss among white voters was completely unprecedented for any winner of a presidential election.

The GOP doesn't have a "woman problem," but the Democrats have a "white woman problem" and a "white man problem."

The articles about the GOP's problem with minority voters blame the Republican Party for alienating minority voters. But shouldn't the Democrat Party be held accountable for alienating white voters?

This is about more than just numbers.

HALF-FULL REPORT 05/02/14

It's great to be back at the HFR ramparts.  I can't thank Joe Katzman enough for the amazing job he did all of last month while I was gone in Yemen, Socotra, Libya, Tunisia, and Portugal.  Thanks, Joe!  And to Miko, who held down the entire TTP fort.

Here's a quote to start things off:

"Russians are immune to both reason and the bludgeon.  The only thing you can do with a Russian is give him what he wants or kill him.  Unfortunately, even if you give him what he wants, sooner or later, you're probably going to have to kill him anyway."

This observation made by Rail Black, the fictional hero of Wildcase, a marvelous thriller novel written by my friend of many years, Neil Russell, seems acutely apt this week...

Other than Putin's invasion of Sudetenland Ukraine possibly triggering war between the US and USSR Russia - financial, military, covert or otherwise - the other blockbuster news of the week was the discovery of the Smoking Benghazi Gun that will blow away Hillary's chances for 2016.  Here it is...

All this talk of Benghazi reminds me of the mistake Clive Bundy made...

And the HFR Hero of the week is obviously...

HOW CAN WE TRUST PEOPLE IN GOVERNMENT TO TELL THE TRUTH?

Few express opinions different from what they are paid to say, and such is equally true for those who work for government. On an almost daily basis, the world is treated to presidential spokespeople denying what most people understand to be true.

Last week, Jason Furman, President Obama's chief economic adviser, who used to have a reputation as a competent economist, embarrassed himself by trying to deny - in response to a Congressional Budget Office report - that the president's proposal to increase the minimum wage would cost jobs.

All too many professionals are willing to ignore empirical evidence when it conflicts with their beliefs or those of their employers. Perhaps in no place do we see greater evidence of this than in the field of climate science.

If the climate scientists who produced their grossly defective, predictive models had been employed by private companies that depended on the accuracy of their predictions, they would have been fired.

Private economic forecasters who are consistently wrong tend to lose their credibility and at least some of their income.  There is one group of economic forecasters, though, who suffer very little loss of prestige or income, even though they may often be wrong. They are those who work for the Federal Reserve and other government agencies.

DOES OBAMA WANT IRAN TO HAVE NUKES?

Obama never explained how allowing Iran to continue to enrich uranium decreases the likelihood of war.

It isn't surprising that the US and the other five powers signed a deal with Iran last Saturday (11/23). Over the past few weeks, US President Barack Hussein Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry made it clear that they were committed to signing a deal with Iran as quickly as possible.

And it isn't surprising that the deal these overeager leaders signed with the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism makes the world a much more dangerous place than it was before the agreement was concluded.

While the deal isn't surprising in and of itself, Obama's decision to conclude it now makes clear the true goal of his foreign policy. To understand that goal, it is first necessary to consider an aspect of the deal that, on the surface, makes little sense.

CINCO DE REALIDAD

By now, I hope you are recovered enough from too many cheap tequila margaritas celebrating "Cinco de Mayo" last night to handle a dose of la realidad - reality.

Cinco de Mayo is a phony tradition, a joke on los gringos, then exploited as a marketing gimmick by Mexican restaurant chains.  So at TTP, our tradition on or about May 5th is to explain la verdad, the truth.

Which is, to begin with: Nobody in Mexico cares about May 5th.  Only we, us gringos, pretend to.  For if you ask just about any reveler at the nearest Pancho Villa's Cantina or some such Mexican-themed bar anywhere in the US, just what is being celebrated on May 5th, you'll get either a blank stare or "It's their July 4th " ignorance.

So first the real history.  Then the reality - the horrific reality of how the fascists of the American Left are using Mexico to destroy their own country.  Their treasonous "Immigration Reform Bill" currently proposed by a Senate "Gang of Eight" is the latest example.

HEALTH FREEDOM VS. HEALTH FASCISM

In April of 1994,  in response to Bill & Hillary Clinton's attempt to seize control of the entire health care system of the United States, I wrote a report to Congress under the auspices of the Freedom Research Foundation entitled "Health Freedom vs. Health Fascism."

It outlined ten specific means by which health care can be better provided to more Americans at greatly reduced cost.

Fifteen years later, none of these means have been implemented, we still have the same "health crisis," and we have another Dem president determined to use this "crisis" to further his fascist agenda.

So here are the report's ten means to achieve health freedom rather than health fascism.  This is verbatim from 15 years ago.  Any updates are in brackets.

The basic propositions of the Health Freedom proposal are:

1. Health Care is so incredibly expensive in America because of government intervention into the medical marketplace.

2. Health care costs can only be radically reduced by an equally radical reduction of government regulations and subsidies.

3. Both the availability and the quality of health care will be substantially increased by such a reduction of government intervention.

SARASOTA RENDEZVOUS!

Get ready for a To The Point Winter Rendezvous on the sugar-sand white beaches of Sarasota.  The dates are Friday February 8 to Sunday February 10.  A lot of TTPers are putting a lot of effort into making this work, so that it will the most successful and the most fun Rendezvous so far.

Sarasota is Florida's unknown gem.  The Ringling Brothers made the place and for years it was the winter headquarters of their famous circus.  It's on Florida's west coast 56 miles or an hour's drive south of Tampa (so getting there with direct flights or from Tampa International is easy).

It's famous for its white "sugar-sand" beaches, gorgeous sunsets, and many cultural activities, but hasn't got the crowds of snowbirds many other places in Florida have.

We'll be updating you with schedules and costs, but we wanted you to know now:  Beach Party Rendezvous, 2/8-10, 2008.  We are going to have a great time.  See you in Sarasota!

THE SCANDAL OF STUPIDITY

If you've seen the story all over the media about incoming Democrat Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Silvestre Reyes botching basic questions about Middle East politics, you've probably asked yourself - are these guys really that dumb?

Here's one way to answer the question.  Until he was tapped by President Bush to run the Security & Exchange Commission, Chris Cox (R-CA 1989-2005) was acknowledged for years to possess the most formidable brains on Capitol Hill.  There is absolutely no doubt - he is breathtakingly bright.

But when I tweaked him once about his reputation (I've known Chris since 1986 when he joined the legal counsel's office in the Reagan White House), he gave me a bemused smile and said, "Jack, being the smartest man in Congress is like being the tallest building in Topeka."

WHY IS THE BUSH WHITE HOUSE SO INCOMPETENT AT EXPLAINING THE TRUTH?

In Sunday's Washington Post Dafna Linzer and Barton Gellman provide their gullible readers with a reprise of one of the great myths of the runup to the Iraq war: that President Bush used blatantly false information to justify the war.

The story revolves around various claims by several intelligence services that Saddam's agents were trying to buy uranium in Africa. At least three European services - the French, the Italian, and the British - told Washington about the reported Iraqi efforts.

Linzer and Gellman are wrong, indeed so clearly wrong that it takes one's breath away. The British government did indeed have information about Iraqi efforts to purchase uranium in Africa.  The definitive British parliamentary inquiry - the Butler Commission Report of July, 2004 - totally endorsed the position of British intelligence.

Nonetheless, the conventional media spin is that "Bush lied."  How can that be?  Part of the answer - the other part being the malevolence of the press - is that the White House made a total hash of the whole thing, as is their wont.

CATCHING THIEVES RED-HANDED

Most of us hate to think about it, but crime is a fact of everyday life. When you grew up, did you live in a neighborhood where you didn't have to lock the door? Seems like a long time ago in a galaxy far away.

These days, we all seek ways to protect our homes and families. Some people - in fact, a lot of people - go for “burglar bars.” In Israel, we call them soragim. But bars ruin your view and are far from burglarproof. The alternative, of course, is a burger alarm. But both alarms and bars can be very expensive.

Hence this column.

You can set up a comprehensive security system throughout your house for very little money with the help of your PC and one or more Web cams.

IS CHINA REALLY BITING ITS ECONOMY’S BULLET?

China’s leaders have brushed aside warnings of an incipient credit crunch in the Chinese economy, determined to purge excesses from the financial system despite falling house prices and the deepest industrial slowdown since the Lehman crisis.

Industrial production dropped 0.4% in August from a month earlier, a rare event that highlights how quickly China is coming off the boil. The growth of fixed asset investment fell to record lows.

“It is a shockingly sharp deceleration,” said Wei Yao, from Societe Generale. “What is surprising is the calm response from Beijing. The new leadership’s tolerance for short-term pain seems to have jumped by another big notch.”

Electricity output has dropped 2.2% over the past year as the authorities continue to force dinosaur industries into closure, chipping away at excess capacity.

New credit has fallen 40%, and there has been an outright contraction of trust loans and undiscounted bankers acceptances over the past two months, the result of a clampdown on parts of the shadow banking nexus.

Premier Li Keqiang has so far refused to blink, determined to drive through deep reforms and wean the economy off exorbitant levels of debt before the damage becomes irreversible. “We are restructuring instead of expanding the monetary supply,” he said last week, warning markets not to expect easy money to ignite a fresh boom this time.

But will he and his fellow Communist Party leaders keep not blinking?
