BOLIVIA’S ROAD TO NOWHERE

boltopo.jpg

Remember this map in Bye-Bye Bolivia last April?

A favorite protest tactic of Evo Morales’ socialist mobs is to block roads leading to Bolivia’s capital, La Paz. This may backfire big time. Serious candidates for the world’s scariest roads are the thin ribbons of asphalt that plunge off the Bolivian highlands to the lowlands. There are only two, and since the lowlands produce most of Bolivia’s wealth, they are the lifelines to all those protesting folk way up there in the Andes.

So don’t be surprised if the guys in the lowlands, the targets of Morales’ demands to nationalize and expropriate their wealth, blow the roads and destroy those two thin lifelines.

They won’t do it themselves. Brazilian Intelligence - ABIN (Agencia Brasileira de Inteligencia Nacional) - will do it for them.

WE NEED A PRESIDENT WHO PRACTICES THE FREEDOM HE PREACHES ABOUT

America's most quoted philosopher (and baseball player) Yogi Berra once said, "You can see a lot just by looking" -- simple wisdom that President Barack Hussein Obama is not likely to heed. In order to see, you have to want to look at the truth that's actually out there.

With reality so different from how our president wishes to portray it, he has little interest in seeing things as they really are.

The president delivered a "Kumbaya" appeal this past week (9/25) to the current session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In his speech, Obama quoted South African leader Nelson Mandela, saying, "To be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others."

This from an American president who is now forcing American employers to buy condoms and abortion pills for their employees, even if it is against that employer's religious convictions.

Or from a nation where poor children are forced to attend public schools where teaching traditional, religious values that they desperately need are prohibited.

Or where the people of the state of California voted to define marriage as between a man and a woman, only to have this referendum overturned by a federal court.

HALF-FULL REPORT 12/16/11

When someone asks, "Do you want the good news or the bad news?", which do you choose to hear first?  I always choose the bad to get it over with, so that's what the HFR is doing today.

Bearer of the bad news is economist David Malpass, whose nail-on-the-head analysis of the economic/political mess we're in - And The Crisis Winner Is?  Government - appeared in this morning's (12/16) Wall Street Journal.

Malpass is making it unavoidably obvious:  The 2010 Republican House Majority under John Boehner has been worthless.  He is also making it painfully obvious that the Tea Parties are as worthless as the Boehner Republicans.  They have accomplished exactly nothing in Washington.  Nothing. Nada, zilch, zero.  What a flame-out.  Evil always triumphs when good people do nothing, and they are doing nothing.

So brace yourselves for the longest year of your lives: 2012.  More joblessness, more economic decline, more deficit spending, more government intrusion into everyone's life and business, more anger and parasite demands from the Moocher Class, more demonization of the Producer Class, with the Grin of Evil that inhabits the White House laughing in our faces 24/7.

Okay, okay, okay, okay, thanks for the downer, Jack, just what I needed at the end of the week - so what's the good news?

THERE IS NO HONEST EXCUSE FOR DEFAULT

There has been much discussion about whether the Democrats or Republicans gain a political advantage from the debt-ceiling-increase mess. An equally interesting and, perhaps, more important question is who has a vested interest in this financial chaos.

First, a few facts:

*It is estimated that between Aug. 3 and 31, the U.S. government will receive revenues of approximately $172 billion and have expenses of $307 billion, leaving a deficit for those days of about $135 billion. The revenues will be sufficient to pay Social Security and interest on the debt, but not many of the other obligations.

*The 12.4 percent Social Security payroll tax paid by employers and employees goes to buy special-purpose government bonds that are held by the Social Security Trust Fund. The Trust Fund holds about $2.4 trillion in these bonds, so it would be many years before they are exhausted. The only way there would not be enough revenue to cover the Social Security checks is if President Obama decided to spend the money on something else.

*Mercatus Institute research fellow Veronique de Rugy has identified an additional couple of trillion dollars of U.S. government physical and trust fund assets that could be legally sold to cover budget shortfalls.  See the section on "Liquidating Existing Assets" in the link.

BLOW IT UP

It is important to drive this message into the thick dhimmitized skulls of New York City's spineless political weasels:

The Ground Zero Mosque will not be built - this will literally not stand.  Whatever measures necessary to prevent its existence will be taken.  Period.

While the Dhimmi Pols fulminate over this statement, and engage in the only behavior they know: call names - racist! bigot! - like a 5th grader as they are incapable of logical argument, we can get to work answering questions, starting with:

How can the project be blown up as in economically sabotaged so it never gets built and has to be blown up physically?  When you think about it, there are lots of ways to blow this thing up, as in ruin it, so that it never gets built at all.

The Ground Zero Mosque is, in fact, a perfect opportunity to force the issue of Liberal/Democrat Moslem appeasement, to force the issue of whether Islam really is a religion or a totalitarian political ideology disguised as, pretending to be, a religion.

WHAT HAPPENED TO JUSTICE IN AMERICA?

What happened to justice in America?  It certainly wasn't served on July 28 when the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the unjust convictions of Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean.

During the appellate court's hearing on December 3, 2007, the judges exhibited a disapproving posture towards the government's case.  My communications director, Tara Setmayer, witnessed one of the appellate judges say first hand, "it does seem the government overreacted" in this prosecution.

The judges questioned why the prosecutors "stacked" the charges and got the government's attorney to admit their drug-smuggling star witness "told some lies.".

Yet the judges, after almost eight months of deliberation,  issued a 46 page ruling in complete contrast to what happened in court. What could have possibly happened between the December 3rd hearing and now?

THE DE-HOMOSEXUALIZATION OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

A Vatican source has disclosed to To The Point a psychological trauma of John Paul II. Whenever Vatican investigators brought the results of their vetting process regarding an individual’s candidacy for bishop, cardinal, or other office, and they revealed he was a homosexual, John Paul II would refuse to believe it.

He did so because accusing someone of homosexuality was a standard practice of the Communist government in his native Poland regarding anyone it regarded as an enemy of the state. From his ordination as a Catholic priest in 1946 to elevation to Archbishop of Krakow in 1963 and Cardinal in 1967, the then Karol Wojtyla witnessed this personal destruction repeatedly. So traumatized, he summarily dismissed such accusations as Pope, and would approve the elevation of anyone so accused.

This is why the Catholic Church, from Bishops in Boston to the Vatican itself, is riddled with homosexuals today. As the Dean of the College of Cardinals and the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Ratzinger learned who the homosexuals are in the Vatican and the almost 3,000 dioceses in the world. As Pope Benedict XVI, he will encourage their departure from the priesthood.

HALF-FULL REPORT 12/09/11

Why didn't I ever think to call Russian dictator Vladimir Putin The Gremlin In The Kremlin?  It took the London Telegraph to come up with the cleverest headline of the week.  At last, Russians are realizing what a punk Putin is, who tries so achingly hard to be a macho-man.  (You know I have personal experience over what a lightweight he is.)

**
Meanwhile, the hammering of Newt continues.  What's really gone viral - particularly in Iowa - is this video hit comparing Newt's values to those of Kim Kardashian.  Ouch!

**
It's a contest as to who should be the HFR Hero of the Week.  We report, you decide.

**
Now for the HFR Word of the Week.  Rehypothecation.  It's literally a trillion-dollar word.  To understand why, we need to talk about Cameron and Corzine.

UNLEASH OR OUTLAW THE FUTURE?

Have things stopped getting better?

Americans had become used to ever-increasing living standards, but there is evidence that for many people, life is not improving. There is also a growing pessimism about the future with surveys showing that Americans do not think their children and grandchildren will be better off.

Last week, there was a most interesting discussion between two of the world's leading tech gurus - George Gilder and Peter Thiel - at FreedomFest in Las Vegas. Mr. Thiel argued that, in many areas, progress has stopped or almost stopped.  Mr. Gilder was more optimistic.  Yet both agreed on what the obstacle to progress is.

REVOLUTIONARY CONSTITUTIONALISM

Required reading for most any course in the Philosophy of Science is Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962).

Kuhn distinguished between "normal science," which is essentially puzzle-solving - trying to answer unsolved issues arising within a framework or "paradigm" of accepted scientific principles - and "revolutionary science," which is when the unsolved issues can no longer be answered within the paradigm and must be replaced by a new paradigm.

The classic historic example is Ptolemaic astronomy, which tried to explain the motions of the planets within the geocentric paradigm - that the sun revolved around the earth.  This "normal science" finally became so unbearably complicated that it broke down, to be replaced by the heliocentric "Copernican Revolution" - that the earth revolved around the sun (which Sir Francis Bacon accepted but called "a rape of the senses").

So let's talk about The Structure of Political Revolutions.

THE REAL OBAMA IN AFGHANISTAN

[Last Saturday, July 19, Barack Hussein Obama paid a brief visit to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan on his way to Kabul.  US Marine Battle Captain Jeffrey S. Porter wrote a brief  eyewitness account in an email to his family and friends, which To The Point is able to publish here.]

Hello everyone,

As you know I am not a very political person. I just wanted to pass along that Senator Obama came to Bagram, Afghanistan for about an hour on his visit to 'The War Zone'. I wanted to share with you what happened. He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle, got to the area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who is the commander here at Bagram.

As the Soldiers were lined up to shake his hand he blew them off and didn't say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the General.

BOLTON’S FIRST CAGE

Now that John Bolton’s UN Ambassador nomination has been sent to the Senate floor, the hot question is: will they or won’t they? Will the Dems filibuster? Maybe, but more likely is they won’t, as it would all but guarantee the quick enactment of the stupidly-named “nuclear option” of ending judicial filibusters. Either way, the betting on Capitol Hill is that he will be confirmed.

As he settles in to his new UN offices, don’t expect John Bolton to have been the least bit intimidated by the Dem’s vendetta against him, nor to lie low and not rattle anybody’s cage for a while. That’s not what GW is sending him to do at Turtle Bay. John has quite a list of cages he intends to rattle, and the first one belongs to France.

OBAMA’S DISASTROUS TRANSFORMATION OF OUR MILITARY

Last week (7/05), in a case before the U.S. Military Court of Appeals, by a 3-2 vote the judges delivered an outrageous decision.

Army Ranger First Lieutenant Michael Behenna was deemed to have no right to self-defense when he killed the Iraqi prisoner he was interrogating after the latter threw a concrete block at him and tried to seize his firearm.

Unless he is pardoned, Lt. Behenna will remain incarcerated for the next twelve years.  (Note: to support Lt. Behenna, go to defendmichael.com.)

Unfortunately, under President Obama, service personnel's rising fears of being prosecuted for acting to protect themselves and their missions are but one of many disastrous ways in which the military is being, to use his now-infamous turn of phrase, "fundamentally transformed." Consider a quartet of examples:

HALF-FULL REPORT 12/02/11

Do you hear him?  It's Al Jolson laughing about political events this week, and warning us that we ain't seen nothin' yet.  We're living in Volatility City now, the presidential campaign is just beginning, and it is very silly to claim this candidate is toast or that candidate has it in the bag.  The only outcome you can be confident of is that most Intraders betting their money on their favorite Pub nominee will lose it.

Yes, the campaign already seems interminable, but it's all prologue.  The Fat Lady hasn't even cleared her throat.  This is so not over. Just to give you an idea, here's how it is possible - albeit not probable - for Sarah Palin to be the nominee, and without even running in the primaries.

**
There's lot's more this week.  Such as: it's really going to surprise you who is behind the series of unfortunate events that have been mysteriously bedeviling Iran.

LESS GOVERNMENT, MORE PROSPERITY

When I hear politicians say they cannot cut government spending and we must have tax increases, I know they are either corrupt or incompetent.

Anyone who has ever been around government agencies knows that they tend to be overstaffed and inefficient compared with operations in the private sector. But we also know that many governments in other countries do a much better job in managing taxpayer dollars than ours.

At a minimum, we should demand that our political leaders manage the government they are responsible for as well as other political leaders in these countries manage their governments.

President Obama and many of his fellow Democrats say we cannot reduce our debt problem to manageable levels without increasing taxes. I say, why not? Some other countries spend less per capita and yet provide higher levels of government service. Take a look at the chart below.
