WHO IS GIVING WAR A CHANCE?

Hear them?  The war drums, pounding louder and louder.  In response to them, the Persian Midget, Mahmoud Ahmadinutjob announced on Iranian Press TV that the US has "hatched a plot" with Israel to attack Iran "within the next three months."

Hmmm... three months.  That would be, like... October.  How convenient.

A lot of TTPers are convinced that Zero's October Surprise is an Arab-Israeli attack on Iran for which he can claim credit for allowing or winking at.  We should all wish him well in this endeavor.  If there is to be an October Surprise, let's hope this is it.

Just why Zero will think it will help the electoral chances of Congressional Dems in November is not clear.  It will outrage the Moonbat Left, who will just not show up at the voting booth, while all the Pubs and Indies will cheer an attack on Iran and then pull the GOP lever anyway.

Now if Zero thinks that giving war a chance is the way to give his Dems a chance, all we can say is, cool - go for it.  Wiping out the terrorist mullahs and Moslem crazies of Iran would be the best possible October Surprise.

But... how could an anti-military metrosexual pantywaist like Zero come up with this idea?  Because it's not his idea, and the person whose idea it is talked him into it.  Who could that be?  Let's go to Seoul, South Korea to find out.

THE CHINA INTERNET FREEDOM PROJECT

While Beijing was sending in troops to crack down on protesters in Tibet, they also made sure to boot out the foreign journalists, jam the short wave radios, and lock down the Internet.  So, how did the Tibetans get the news out?  By using DynaWeb and UltraReach - tiny software tools that seek out cracks in the Chinese Great Firewall and connect users' computers to the biggest anti-censorship network in the world.

These tools scramble the users' communications and shuttle the data back and forth along an underground cyber network in a way that cannot be detected by high-tech monitoring and jamming equipment. At this point, the censors' firewalls virtually disappear to the users.  They can now access blocked websites and also freely communicate with the rest of the world.

The group that built this special network and tools like DynaWeb and UltraReach and recent additions, GPass and FirePhoenix, is the Global Internet Freedom Consortium or GIF.

You may have never heard of GIF, but it is easily the largest and most mature anti-censorship operation in the world -- loved by users, loathed and attacked by censors.

TSANTSAS IN ECUADOR

The first tribe I ever lived with made these. It’s a human shrunken head, made by the Shuara Jivaros in the Amazon jungles of Ecuador. They call it a tsantsa, and this particular one was given to me by Chief Tangamashi when he adopted me into his clan in the summer of 1960. I was all by myself and 16 years old.

The practice of shrinking your enemy’s head was once confined to the Amazon, but now it has evidently spread to Ecuador’s capital, for that is what a mob in Quito attempted to do this week with the president of their country, Lucio Gutierrez.

I know headhunters, and this was no haphazard, spontaneous revenge-raid. This was well-planned and well-executed. Tangamashi would have approved, and felt he had something in common with the organizers - Porter Goss and Paul Wolfowitz. With the coup in Quito this week, the Bush Administration has finally launched its effort to rescue South America from the threat of Hugo Chavez.

THE ZOO INSIDE YOU

One of the delights of science is its capacity for showing us that the world is not as it seems. A good example is the startling statistic that there are at least 10 times as many bacterial cells (belonging to up to 1,000 species) in your gut as there are human cells in your entire body: that "you" are actually an entire microbial zoo as well as a person.

You are 90% microbes by cell count, though not by volume -- a handy reminder of just how small bacteria are.

It has been clear for a long time that the microbes in your gut are not just passengers but colleagues that help with the digestion of food: releasing vitamins, breaking down toxins and metabolizing nutrients into more useful forms.

What's becoming clear from such experiments is that they are also vital to the immune system's capacity to fight infection. It's as if they train the body's defense forces.

For instance, breast-fed babies, whose gut microbes are dominated by creatures called bifidobacteria, are less likely than formula-fed babies to suffer not only from diarrhea but also from allergies later in life.

HALF-FULL REPORT 11/25/11

Perhaps the best characterization of this Thanksgiving week's events would be droll, which means curiously amusing.

We'll resist the temptation to name Tatyana Limanova, a well-known news anchor on Russian television, the HFR Hero of the Week for flipping the bird to Zero.  Who among us has not done the same when confronted with his repulsive presence on our TV screens?  Tatyana, however, did so with 120 million Russians watching.  You know a lot of them applauded, and so do we.

**
You're not going to get a better example of Joel Wade's Democrats Are In A Cult, Republicans Are In A Trance than the Supercommittee fiasco which so predictably ended in failure on Monday (11/21).

From start to finish, this was a charade engineered by Dems to sucker hapless Pubs into keeping their perpetual spending machine running as usual.

**
Perhaps the best news of the week is the double-whammy Warmism took... And the Word of the Weeke is Eurogeddon...

**
As you know, I was in Africa for the past while.  Last weekend, Pope Benedict XVI was in Africa as well, in a country called Benin, which borders Nigeria.  As it turned out, I was in Benin at the same time...

A MARKET ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL BANKING

Beware Greeks bearing debt -- or any other country that has too much of it.

Despite ever-increasing government regulation of banks, which often are required to hold government debt as reserves, the systemic risk of a failure in the global financial system is growing rather than diminishing. There are solutions that require less, rather than more, regulation.

If you look at the big banks that have been in trouble or the banks that regulators and others worry about being in financial trouble, you will notice that virtually all of them have a corporate form of ownership and are heavily regulated. They also increasingly are being forced to be tax collectors for governments.

There is an alternative form of bank ownership that is likely to lead to fewer problems and avoid the "too big to fail" problem, and that is mutual-fund banking.

RATIONAL OPTIMISM

As "The Oasis for Rational Conservatives," To The Point espouses a world-view that could be called rational optimism.  It is encapsulated every week in (and in the very title of) The Half-Full Report.

Smart-aleck cynics claim the term "rational optimism" is an oxy-moron.  We can thank them for sharing, and suggest they learn a little history - such as about the most successful presidency of modern times, that of Ronald Reagan whose success was due in large part to his cheerful - and rational - optimism.

Sober cynics, however, who have studied history, claim that any optimism expressed today as America's freedom and prosperity are being maliciously destroyed by the Fascist Left is like the devil-may-care insouciance expressed in the movie Cabaret.

The scene is Berlin in 1931 as Weimar Germany is facing the emerging Nazi threat.  Germans wishing to ignore the threat are welcomed to the Kit Kat Club with the movie's theme song:

No use permitting
some prophet of doom
To wipe every smile away.
Come hear the music play.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
Come to the Cabaret!

But this is irrational optimism, stupid, adolescent, and cowardly.  Rational optimism is based on brains and gonads focused on optimizing the vulnerabilities of the evil with which you are confronted.

It is also based on as wide a context as possible.  So we're going to start 500,000 years ago, and work our way right down to upcoming state legislature races.  Buckle your seat belts.

THE RACIAL SPLIT THAT’S TEARING THE DEMOCRATS APART

Barack Hussein Obama's recent ridicule and rejection of Hillary Rodham Clinton's suggestion that he be her VP running-mate squashes the "dream-team" fantasy of many Democrats.

It also means the racial division within the Democrat Party between Blacks and Latinos will continue to widen into a disastrously unbridgeable abyss.  What's happening in my home town of Los Angeles is instructive.

The Los Angeles Times has been documenting with Pulitzer quality reporting, the racial gang wars in the L.A. basin. The largest and oldest Latino gang,  the Mexican Mafia, has ordered ethnic cleansing of formerly all-black neighborhoods. This has led to an increase in black vs Latino violence.

Close to my home, the Gateway Harbor area, several blacks have been murdered by Latino gangs in this expressed racial hate crime wave. A six year old black boy was shot in the head and is fighting for his life at Harbor UCLA Medical center -- two Latino gang members were arrested for the "random" shooting. Hate crime charges may be filed.

These hate crimes help explain the growing division in the national Democrat Party.

LINDER’S 16TH PROBLEM

One of the very first “Liberation Links” we put up at the inception of To The Point was to John Linder’s FairTax. John is a Republican Congressman from Georgia who has authored a bill, HR 25 for the 109th Congress, that would in his words, “repeal all corporate and individual income taxes, payroll taxes, self-employment taxes, capital gains taxes, estate taxes and gift taxes - and replace it with a revenue-neutral personal consumption tax.”

If the FairTax were to become law, the IRS would cease to exist, and we would pay our taxes like we buy a gallon of gasoline. Yes, that gallon and just about everything else would cost 23% more in a national retail sales tax - but since business-to-business transactions are not taxed, nor would businesses be paying corporate taxes or the employers’ share of payroll taxes, consumer prices would drop by at least that 23% if not much more.

The extent of the explosion of increased prosperity that would happen throughout America if the FairTax were to replace the IRS is difficult to exaggerate. Let’s put it this way: The FairTax would be the single greatest act of wealth creation in the history of man.

We are now fast approaching a tipping point of acknowledgement that the federal tax code is irretrievably broken and has to be replaced. Linder’s FairTax is by far the best fix. Except there’s this one little problem - actually, it’s the 16th problem.

ISLAM IS COMING FOR AMERICA JUST AS IT HAS COME FOR EUROPE

[Last Saturday (6/30), Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders delivered this speech at the Western Conservative Summit in Denver, Colorado.]

Thank you, dear friends, ladies and gentlemen, for inviting me to the Western Conservative Summit. It is always a pleasure to come to America. I was here a few weeks ago to meet with my dear friend, congresswoman Michele Bachmann, to talk about Islam and the threat to America and Europe.

I feel honored to have been invited to address you today about the situation in Europe and in particular in my own country, the Netherlands. This situation serves as a warning to what might happen in America if you fail to be vigilant.

For make no mistake: Islam is also coming for America. Indeed, it has already arrived. Your country, too, is facing a stealth jihad - an Islamic attempt to introduce Sharia law bit by bit.

Islam demands separate campus housing for Moslems; Islam demands that women have separate hours in gyms and swimming pools; schools are banning Christmas celebrations and are taking pork off their cafeteria menus to avoid offending Moslem students. And courts - even in America, we have seen an example in Florida - have begun to apply Sharia law.

Be aware that this is only the beginning.

WHAT PRO-GOVERNMENT ECONOMISTS CANNOT SEE

Former Vice Chairman of the Federal Reserve Alan Blinder wrote an article in the Wall Street Journal this past  week (6/21) attacking Republicans who have said that more government spending will kill jobs.

In the same vein, my old friend Bruce Bartlett, a Treasury official in the George H.W. Bush administration, wrote an article attacking former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and other Republicans for claiming the Reagan tax cuts paid for themselves.

(Note: Mr. Bartlett used to be a supply-side advocate, but in the past few years, he has become an almost full-time Republican basher and, not surprisingly, now writes for the New York Times.)

Mr. Blinder, Mr. Bartlett and others of their stripe no longer seem to be able to see beyond the first-order effects of an economic policy. That is why they are always dead wrong.

HOW CORRUPT IS THE AFGHAN GOVERNMENT OUR SOLDIERS ARE DYING FOR?

Almost every story about Afghanistan you read nowadays mentions how "corrupt" the Afghan government in Kabul is - and then moves on, rarely citing any real specifics.

So let's get granular with the gory details of just how corrupt, crooked, and criminal the Karzai regime is for which tens of thousands of American soldiers are risking their lives to keep in power.

The regime is led by Hamid Karzai and three of his six brothers, Mahmoud, Qayum, and Ahmad Wali (known by his initials, AWK).  The Karzai family are tribal leaders of the Popalzai clan of Pushtuns, which is centered in Kandahar.  AWK runs Kandahar for the regime, while the other three are in Kabul.

The Karzais are the beneficial owners of a number of private banks in Kabul through which they launder money from bribes, extortion, protection rackets, aid money theft, and heroin smuggling.  The banks are...

ISLAMOFASCISM THROUGH THE FINANCIAL BACK-DOOR

Since September 11, 2001, the men and women of the U.S. Department of the Treasury have worked tirelessly to identify and cut off sources of financing for terrorist organizations and other threats to our national security.

However, their efforts are now taking place alongside an emerging financial trend that could threaten our national security in ways not yet fully grasped: the penetration of Islamofascism-tainted countries and radical Islamists themselves into Western financial markets and other Western strategic industries.

The problem consists of two elements.

HILLARY’S WAR ON DELAY

The most powerful Congressmen have, in addition to their regular offices in one of the House Office Buildings (Cannon, Longworth, or Rayburn) on the south side of Capitol Hill, a private office in the Capitol itself. It was in such an office earlier this week that I asked a member of the House leadership about the MSM (mainstream media)/Democrat vendetta against his colleague, Tom DeLay.

“Hillary’s fingerprints are all over it,” came his response. “She has no intention of having to deal with an opposition party controlling the House as her husband did for six years and Ronald Reagan did for eight. She has a very clear plan for seizing control of the entire United States government, which includes orchestrating Democrat control of the House in 2006 so it is firmly in place when she is elected president in 2008.”

It is, then, at Hillary’s direction that the Washington Post, the New York Times, and the entire Liberal Media apparatus are waging a relentless war upon House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

THE LOGISTICS OF CRUDE

Last week in Part 1 of this series, The Dynamics of Crude, we discussed refineries and products.  Now we move to Logistics of Crude Oil and Refinery Products.

Although Ayn Rand's 1957 novel "Atlas Shrugged" portrayed rail as important, especially for Wyatt's Refinery, rail was on its way out by the end of WWII.  Today's major transportation methods are via pipeline and water (barge & ship).  The reason is quite simple: loading and receiving infrastructure.

Here is a great description of both crude oil and refined product pipelines from 2001:  How Pipelines Make the Oil Market Work.

I have read lots of supposedly learned pundits wailing away how Warren Buffett and BNSF Railroad are going transport all that Canadian crude oil when Obama announced that he was blocking the Keystone XL's construction.  This is impossibly dumb -so dumb that Jack Wheeler is convinced it isn't dumb at all, that it's a crony capitalist payoff to Buffett for his supporting Zero.  Buffett bought BNSF for $34 billion in 2009, counting on graft from Zero to provide his ROI.
