THE STUPIDITY OF ANTI-FREEDOM EXPERTS

The only surprising thing about Obamacare architect Jonathan Gruber's revelations that the legislation was based on a series of lies and voter stupidity was that Mr. Gruber was so stupid to think no one would see the videos of him saying so.

The good news is that, perhaps, many more Americans will wake up to the fact that Obamacare is not the only hoax they have been subjected to, and will be much more skeptical about policy experts' snake oil. Most of these schemes increase the power and money flowing to the political class and their "experts," while robbing the pocketbooks and liberties of the people.

The great economist F.A. Hayek (1899-1992) argued there was a limit to what any one person or even groups of people could know, which was one reason socialist planning always failed. His 1974 Nobel Prize lecture ended with the following sentence:

ANTI-FRACKING ZEALOTS ARE THE ENEMIES OF HUMANITY

Recent news stories underscore the tremendous benefits brought by America's fracking revolution.

* The global economy saves $4.9 billion per day in oil spending because of the shale oil boom. Without it there would be a 3 million barrel per day shortfall and prices would likely be 55% higher: $150/barrel.

* Rust Belt cities and industries - from manufacturing, real estate and law to hotels, restaurants and many others - are rebounding because of drilling, fracking and production in nearby shale areas. In Ohio unemployment fell to 5.7% in July from 10.6% four years ago; oil output increased 26% just from the previous quarter, while gas production rose 31% - generating billions in state and local revenues.

* The US oil and natural gas boom means jobs and business for almost 30,000 companies within the industry's vast and complex supply chain. Indeed, the petroleum industry accounts for nearly 10 million jobs and almost 8% of all domestic economic activity, including states far from actual drilling activities.

* The American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers launched a new website to help veterans and other men and women find high-paying jobs in the booming oilfield, fuel and petrochemical industries.

The benefits of fracking are in the trillions, while the alleged risks are exaggerated or even fabricated. So what drives anti-fracking zealots who seem to materialize en masse whenever a new project is announced?

WILL EASTERN EUROPE HANG TOGETHER OR HANG SEPARATELY?

eastern_europe.png

How's this for irony?  I'm on my way to Amsterdam, soon to land at Schiphol Airport - from where MH17 took off on July 17 to be shot down by Putin's Proxies over Ukraine.  From there, I join our Baltic Cruise bound for... St. Petersburg, Russia.  This will be interesting.

When the Soviet Union dissolved at the end of 1991, signaling America's victory in the Cold War, there were high hopes that a now-free and non-Communist Russia would embrace freedom and democracy, joining the West along with other liberated Soviet colonies.  But no.  The Russians didn't celebrate, they immersed themselves in bitter resentment instead.

Thus Putin described the breakup of the Soviet Union as a "tragedy," the "greatest geopolitical disaster of the 20th century."  Not World War II, not Nazism or Communism, not the existence of the USSR but its termination.

Thus he and his millions of Russian admirers are motivated by a passionate revanchism (French from revanche, "revenge") - the dream of reversing territorial losses.  It is exactly the same motivation as the Mexican Nazis (May 2005) of the Reconquista movement.

Last Friday (7/25) in the pages of the Washington Post, Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko called for "a worldwide coalition of nations in support of Ukraine" against Russian revanchism, led by the US and the EU.  Yesterday (7/29), both the US and EU together with Canada, responded to Poroshenko's plea, announcing a new round of economic sanctions on Russia.

Next, expect to see Poroshenko call for a composed of those nations that were once under the Russian boot and will be again unless they unite to prevent it.

He will argue that it's not just Ukraine's freedom at stake - it's all of Eastern Europe's.  He will remind his fellow Eastern European leaders of Benjamin Franklin's famous quip during the signing of the Declaration of Independence, "We must, indeed, all hang together, gentlemen, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately."

How many will heed his call?  There are 23 Former Russian Colonies in Eastern Europe.  Let's take a look at them.

WHY I LOVE OBAMACARE

Brit Hume is no spring chicken.  He's been a journalist reporting on American politics for 45 years.  On Tuesday (11/12), he told Megyn Kelly on Fox News that the Zerocare meltdown is "as bad a political disaster as I have ever seen."

That means as bad as Vietnam was for Lyndon Johnson, as Watergate was for Richard Nixon, and badder than Iran-Contra was for Ronald Reagan and Monica Lewinsky was for Bill Clinton.  Hume is saying that the political fate of Barack Hussein Zero is now in dire jeopardy.

I prefer a different descriptive adjective, however, to characterize this current "political disaster."  For me, more appropriate than "bad" would be "wonderful" or "thrilling."  So much so that I may be the most enthusiastic admirer and supporter of Zero's signature program on the planet, far more than any felonious "navigator."  I think "Obamacare" - a moniker that all conservatives should change to "Zerocare" - is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

There is a lunacy making the email rounds claiming that what Hume is calling a "disaster" is really a success, that it was planned this way to achieve the ultimate liberal-fascist goal of total government control over the US health care system.

It would make more sense to argue that the Zerocare meltdown is proof that Barack Hussein is a conservative mole, that he planned this in order to achieve his goal of the ruination of liberalism and the destruction of the Democrat Party.

Both of these claims regarding what Zero is planning are delusional.  The ancient Greeks would recognize what is going on in an instant.

PHONY SELF-ESTEEM HURTS CHILDREN, EARNED SELF-ESTEEM HELPS THEM

There is a study by Jean Twenge of San Diego State University that is getting a lot of news this week, in which she found that college kids today are more likely to call themselves gifted and driven to succeed, while their test scores and hours spent studying are decreasing. Their tendency toward narcissism has also increased  over the last 30 years.

Some reports get a bit more frenzied than I prefer ("We are raising a generation of deluded narcissists!" just gets us scared, I prefer to be effective); but Twenge has been studying this trend for several years, has accumulated some impressive research, and has written several books.

Today I want to look at what I consider one of the sources of this trend: the phony self-esteem movement, and how it feeds the fixed trait mindset - and thus the need to see oneself as just fantastic. This also shows what can be done to remedy the situation, by contrasting phony self-esteem with the genuine article -- earned self-esteem.

PROTECTING YOURSELF FROM MEXICAN SWINE FLU

The incompetence of President Zero and his DHS secretary Janet Napolitano has now reached lethal levels in their refusal to militarily close the US-Mexico border or even airplane flights from Mexico.

Yet now that the swine flu epidemic has spread from Mexico into the US, we cannot worry about Zero, much less expect him to protect us in any way.  Let's focus on what you can do right now at this moment.

The CDC has identified the virus as a H1N1 virus called swine influenza A. This virus has been known for over 40 years, infecting humans directly from birds such as ducks (avian flu) or pigs (swine flu).

Never before could it be transmitted from one human to another.  The virus has now evolved to where it can.  This new human-to-human transmission is what is making the H1N1 pandemic.

Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw suggest the following prophylactic measures to protect their friends at To The Point.  As Durk says, "I'm afraid that you are not going to like this, but I really do know my biology..."

THE AUDACITY OF NAÏVETÉ WITH IRAN

Senator Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. wants to talk to our Middle Eastern enemies, notably Iran. He can't imagine a happy resolution of the war without such talks. And he seems to think this desire is something new, maybe even revolutionary.

He apparently does not know that it is not at all new, and certainly not revolutionary. It is instead the fully tested "policy" of the United States for the past thirty years, ever since the seizure of power by the mullahs in 1979.

We have had high-level and low-level talks, public and private talks, talks conducted by diplomats, by spooks, and by a colorful array of intermediaries. All failed.  We tried everything. The Iranians were not interested. It reminds me of that great scene from Goldfinger, with Sean Connery as James Bond spread-eagled on a sheet of gold, and a laser beam slicing through it, headed for his private parts.

"Do you expect me talk, Goldfinger?" he asks.

"No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die."

That's Iran. The mullahs want us to die.  Mr. Obama won't allow himself to understand this.  Perhaps his book should have been entitled The Audacity of Naïveté.

A WARNING AND A THANK YOU

This is a quick warning and a long thank you.

First, I need to warn you about a very dangerous new computer virus, a "trojan horse" or "worm" traced to a group of malicious hackers in China.  It's called Mocmex and it can destroy your PC Windows computer.  Another good reason to get a Mac!  Read the link to see how you can protect yourself.

Second, we'll get back to transistors and electrons next week, but I am still coming down from the wonderful time I and my fellow TTPers had in Sarasota.  So pardon me if I wax philosophical and take the time to share our blessings.

This being a techie column, let me put it in techie terms.  If life were a technological device, what would be yours?

THE NEXT CARTOON FREAKOUT

A white South African political cartoonist, Jonathan Shapiro, famously controversial in his country, got really upset the other day when the editor, Tim Du Plessis, of a popular South African magazine, Rapport, fired one of his writers, Deon Maas, for writing a column calling for tolerance towards believers in satanism.

Shapiro draws his cartoons under the pen name Zapiro - and the one he drew in anger towards Du Plessis has ticked off a major fraction of the entire population of South Africa.  This just happened, with Zapiro's cartoon appearing in the November 21 edition of the Mail & Guardian newspaper day before yesterday.

It's unlikely, however, that there will be Christian riots in Joburg, or elsewhere in the world, protesting Zapiro's comparing the Holy Trinity to the Easter Bunny - or Hindu riots in Delhi over comparing Shiva to the Tooth Fairy - or Jewish riots in Jerusalem over comparing Yaweh (Jehovah) to Zeus.

That's because these folks are mostly grown-up adults who just wearily shake their heads at juvenile attempts to ridicule their religion.

But you can bet on folks who have never grown out of the Dark Ages to engage in yet another violent world-wide temper tantrum over comparing Allah to Casper the Friendly Ghost, and worse, actually depicting Allah in a scribbled drawing.

So sit back and get set to enjoy the next great Mooselimb Cartoon Freakout.  Here's Zapiro's cartoon:

ROLL YOUR OWN SEARCH ENGINE

With its billions of sites, the Web has become the natural place to turn for information about nearly any subject. Large search engines like Google and Yahoo have their little search bots running 24/7, gathering data on sites and reporting back to the database, which you tap into when you conduct your search.

Unfortunately, though, finding what you need isn't always so easy. The data you need are definitely out there - the problem is getting to the right site, ferreting out the useful Web pages from the 5 million others ones that might mention the term you searched for, but in a totally useless, completely irrelevant context.

There is an easy, fast, and free way around this dilemma - and that is to create your own personalized search engine.  Here's how.

Chapter Four: STRANGERS

And so Malinali trudged through the forest and swamps to Pontochan, where Forearms sold her to the King and she moved into the palace - living in a palace again, but now as a slave and not a princess.

Malinali became very appreciative of Ciuacuatl’s lessons, for with her skills at sewing, cooking, and medicine, she was assigned to the household staff and not put out into the maize or cacao fields for manual drudgery.

Five winters passed. She became fluent in Maya, and learned how to do her work well and quietly, so as to be noticed as little as possible. She listened attentively, however, and began hearing talk of mysterious strangers who lived in gigantic war canoes. No one knew where they came from. Their skin was light and they had hair on their faces. Some wore metal on their bodies. Their canoes had carried them across the salt water from the south. They stopped at the mouth of the Pontochan River and talked to a group of Mayas but no one could understand what they were saying. They continued across the water to the north and were never seen again.

CALL IT CLIMATE FASCISM

The latest Warmist campaign is that scientists and journalists who mislead the public about ‘global warming' should be banned from television.

So says the producer of a highly tendentious and misleading new eco-propaganda movie about global warming, apparently blissfully unaware of the irony of his position.

Robert Kenner is the producer of Merchants of Doubt, a documentary which seeks to claim that climate skepticism is nothing but a fossil-fuel-funded conspiracy coordinated by the same kind of cackling evil-doers who tried to persuade you that smoking doesn't cause cancer.

Like the Obama administration, the movie takes for granted the notion that catastrophic man-made climate change is real, that all the scientists promoting the theory are reliable, honest and principled, and that the only possible reason anyone might have for claiming otherwise is that they are "merchants of doubt" - i.e., corrupt disinformers who deliberately and cynically seek to hide the truth about global warming from the public because they have been paid to do so by sinister corporate interests.

Now Kenner has written a public letter to one of his fellow celebrity alarmists, scientist-turned-filmmaker Randy Olson, to help promote his crappy film raise awareness in the media of the very serious issue of Big Oil funded denialism.

The letter says:

HALF-FULL REPORT 12/19/14

Yesterday in the Kremlin, the Putin Huilo gave what Bloomberg described as an "Extremely Long Very Weird Press Conference."

It reminded me of the now-viral YouTube video of the Chinese two year-old missing a putt:

{youtube}5_UVgmPDMRY{/youtube}

As the London Economist describes Putin's Russia, it's The End of the Line.

What is happening to Russia - and elsewhere - affords an extremely teachable moment in what makes prosperity and indeed freedom itself possible.  Let's take that moment now....

All that aside, we nonetheless are facing Two More Years of Hell.  This week provided ample evidence of why....

And how Islam is rapidly becoming a religion of criminal insanity....

Yet there is some good news....

CONTAINING PUTIN

Russian President Vladimir Putin's clear goal is to re-establish as much of the Russian Empire (1721-1917) as he can. At its greatest extent, the Russian Empire included the territories of the old Soviet Union, most of Eastern Europe, Finland and Alaska (up to 1866).

Mr. Putin knows the next U.S. president is unlikely to be as indecisive and reluctant to act as President Obama. He also faces falling demand for Russian oil and gas and unexpected price declines, which may cause him to run through Russia's considerable financial reserves. Accordingly, the pressure is on Mr. Putin to act quickly.

The Russian economy is now little more than a petro-state, relying on oil and gas, which account for 68 percent of its total exports, and more than half of its government revenue. Much of Russia's manufacturing base evaporated after the end of the Soviet Union. The ruble has fallen more than 30 percent against the dollar since the beginning of this year. As a result, inflation is accelerating (more than 8 percent at the moment) as imports become more and more expensive.

Thus Mr. Putin is both dangerous and vulnerable.  He must be contained.  Let's see how.

THE UNFINISHED WAR

The war with Hamas is not over. What we are experiencing today is a temporary cease-fire.

The most basic reason the war is not over is because Hamas has no existence outside its war against the Jewish state. Hamas exists to obliterate Israel. The goal of each round of fighting is to soften Israel up for the next round.  Hamas will only stop fighting when it is defeated. And Israel did not defeat Hamas.

Not only did Israel not defeat Hamas, but incredibly, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, senior IDF commanders are now lobbying the government to in effect surrender to Hamas..

The General Staff's behavior isn't the only reason that Hamas thinks aggression is the way to go. The US and Europe have gone out of their way, both during the fighting and today, to show Hamas that they are right to attack Israel.  Mr. Obama in particular.
