MANICHEAN MOMENTS

[This Monday’s Archive was first in TTP as a Glimpse on March 9, 2022, two weeks after Putin invaded Ukraine. The situation remains black and white, there is no gray area, good vs. evil, Ukraine vs. Russia, Zelensky vs. Putin. Zelensky is the most heroic leader of any country in the world today, Putin is the most monstrously evil. Let us hope that Trump stops taking the side of evil as per his deal for Putin’s diesel and his Truth Social post yesterday (10.18), and soon comes to his senses to embrace decency and freedom once again. And yes, I still believe Ukraine will triumph in the end.]

Most often, there are valid perspectives on either side of a dispute, not a simple divide between good and evil with no gray areas in between. That was not the case in Afghanistan in the 1980s. The Mujahaddin you see here were fighting a morally just war against immoral atrocity. The war waged by the Afghan Mujahaddin to liberate their country from Soviet Russian conquest was a Manichean Moment.

There is another Manichean Moment taking place right now in Ukraine. Once again, Russia is attempting to subjugate an innocent country with bombs and immoral atrocity. This is good vs. evil once more. There is no gray area. Those on the side of Ukraine and Zelensky fighting for freedom are on the side of moral decency. Those on the side of Russia and Putin are not. They are on the side of irredeemable evil.

That’s why, when I see photos of Ukrainian freedom fighters atop Russian tanks they captured, it reminds me of those I took of Afghan freedom fighters atop Russian tanks they captured. The Mujahaddin defeated Russia a third of a century ago. The Ukrainians will defeat Russia now. Good will triumph over evil once more. THE DEMOCRAT BRIEF AND THE TRUMP COUNTERSTRATEGY

Since Jimmy Carter, the Democrat Party’s foreign and domestic brief has converged on one operating premise: American decline is inevitable, and the Party’s claim to power is that it will manage that decline more gracefully than its rivals.

Each Democrat administration from Carter through Biden has added policies that, taken together, shrank American hard power, ceded industrial ground to China, loosened control of the border, and turned federal institutions inward against domestic opponents while exacerbating political and cultural divisions among Americans.

The Trump administration’s second-term program, a hemispheric “Fortress America” strategy, is best understood as a deliberate reversal of that brief.

Let us examine the premise.

THE DEMOCRATS’ ENSLAVEMENT

There is a strange spectacle unfolding in American politics. The Democratic establishment calculatingly spends its dwindling energies bowing to its growing and increasingly radical left wing that has openly declared its intention to replace it.

The Democratic Socialists of America, the streamers, the campus activists, and the insurgent candidates who style themselves as the party’s conscience have never hidden their goal. They do not want a seat at the table. They want the whole tent, and they have said so.

Yet the establishment responds not with resistance but with flattery, cheerfully murmurating about how big that tent is. That now proverbial tent has become a cage, and the Democrats are in it.

To understand why, we have to understand the historically peculiar power of the radical left. In raw numbers, it remains a minority within the party, but numbers have never been its weapon.

Its weapon is intensity.

TRUMP’S REFORMS ARE STRENGTHENING SOCIAL SECURITY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

For years, certain free-market conservatives have dismissed Social Security as a bankrupt, compulsory government Ponzi scheme.

They pointed to demographics, political raiding of the trust funds, and a worker-to-beneficiary ratio that has collapsed from over 40-to-1 in the early decades to under 3-to-1 today. The actuarial math looked grim enough that those critics appeared headed for vindication.

Trustees reports have long projected the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance trust fund’s exhaustion in the early 2030s. After that point, incoming payroll taxes would cover only about 78 percent of scheduled benefits. That trajectory has shifted under President Trump.

Social Security Administration Commissioner Frank Bisignano, a trustee of the system, has stated plainly that the program “will be around for another 90 years.”

“This is a long journey. It’s 90 years old, and it’ll be around for another 90 years,” he said. “The president has promised to protect and preserve, and that’s what we’re doing.”

The change rests on concrete actions. . .

LIBERTY BIBERTY AND THE UNFORCED ERROR THAT COULD FLIP THE MIDTERMS

She’s the Scrappy-Doo of corporate mascots — a cloying, cringeworthy new character that repulses the target audience.

It’s simply a bad concept: Instead of coming across as cute or clever, it feels cynical and self-serving. The audience hates it!

But we’ll get back to Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) in just a sec.

Insurance companies run the damnedest ad campaigns, and it costs ‘em a pretty penny: Every year, Progressive, Allstate, GEICO, and State Farm spend over a billion EACH on advertising. (Aflac, surprisingly, spends “only” about $100 million.)

So there are lots of opportunities to throw feces at a wall and see what sticks.

But 99% of the time, Big Insurance sticks to marketing campaigns built around a specific protagonist. And not just any protagonist either — only the crème de la crème will make the final cut:

Peyton Manning

And, for many years, all was well. Life was predictable: Insurance commercials ran in between gambling and pharmaceutical commercials. We heeded advice from geckos, emus, ducks, and Mannings — just as God intended.

Then, on July 20, 2026, Liberty Mutual unleashed Liberty Biberty on an unsuspecting world.

We’ve covered a lot of Durk and Sandy’s research and recommendations, and often, I think, the science can be intimidating. Sometimes word of mouth can be reassuring, even when we fully trust the source of the technical information. So, today we’ll share with you a testimonial from one of our own TTPers, Kirk Klingler:

THE VIRTUE OF SELF-INTERESTED WORK

Giving and helping others are wonderful things. We are appreciated when we give to others through charity, volunteer work, or other acts of kindness; and rightly so. When we can help another person in some way, it creates a spirit of goodwill, and it’s one of the single most important acts we can do for our own happiness.

What’s often overlooked though is how much consciousness, caring, time, money, and energy each one of us already puts into significantly helping other people every day – through the work we do.

Every hour we’ve spent in a classroom, in an internship, and at work is an hour we’ve spent honing and perfecting our skills. Every dollar we’ve spent for tuition, books, seminars, travel – and of course those most expensive of seminars, the cost of failure or loss that has added to our wisdom – is a dollar we’ve spent investing in our ability to do our work well.

And every ounce of energy we’ve spent thinking about, worrying over, creating ideas for, and sweating through hard work and difficult times is an ounce of energy that increases our ability to provide some kind of product or service to another human being.

It’s popular these days to dismiss all this because we’re doing it for the money; as though earning money cheapens our efforts, makes our efforts base, selfish, or materialistic.

But earning a living from what we do makes it possible and reasonable for us to do it. When demagogues lecture young college graduates to forego making money, and instead to do something else that helps people, they are telling them that what we do to make money does not help people.

This, of course, is exactly the opposite of the truth.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: AMAZON INITIATION

They live traditionally as they have for centuries, isolated in their forests from the world. Here the young boys, painted and adorned, apprehensively await their initiation ceremonies into becoming young men. They are to be tested to show they have what it takes for the village to be proud of them.

THE CHRISTIAN CATHEDRAL OF A COUNTRY THAT DOESN’T EXIST

Banja Luka, Srpska. You may never have of this country, the Republic of Srpska, that takes up half the size and 40% of the population of the Balkan country of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The entire country was conquered and ruled for centuries by the Islamic Ottoman Empire, thus after the Ottomans fell in WWI and Yugoslavia broke apart after the Soviet Union fell, those Bosnians who retained adherence to Christianity through those centuries of Islamic occupation found themselves greatly outnumbered by those who had converted to Islam (“Bosniaks”). So they (Bosnian Serbs) formed their own country which remains unrecognized by every other country on the planet.

They rebuilt their beautiful Cathedral of Christ the Savior – destroyed in WWII and never allowed rebuilding by Communist Yugoslavia – in their capital of Banja Luka. You can see how gorgeous the interior is from the photo. The whole country is beautiful with its lakes, forests, rivers, vineyards, sprinkled with old castles and charming villages. TEENAGERS OF BUKHARA

Bukhara is the oldest city on the fabled Silk Road. You’ve seen Glimpses of The Well of Job, where legend says Job of the Old Testament struck the ground with his staff, creating a well bubbling with fresh pure water that still flows today.

And of The Ark of Bukhara, the palace-fortress of Bukhara rulers since 500 BC. The ancient Silk Road oasis has a history of 5,000 years. I was first here in 1963, a 19 year-old teenager with a summer job of filming fabulously exotic places in Central Asia unknown to the West for a Hollywood stock film company.

I was not much older than these teenage ladies back then. I took this picture of them when I was last in Bukhara in 2019. It was so extraordinarily lucky of me to experience such magical places as Bukhara when young. It’s enabled me to stay young at heart so many decades later.

SAGRADA FAMILIA

The Cathedral of Sagrada Familia (Holy Family) in Barcelona, Spain, was designed by legendary Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926). Construction started in 1883, continued after his death, to be finally completed and consecrated this June 2026. It is the tallest church in the world and perhaps the most extraordinary. You have to see it to believe it. Worshippers come from all over the world to experience it. Christianity is flourishing here in Barcelona. Globalism Is All Fun and Games Until Somebody’s Sovereignty Gets Hurt

Globalism promised prosperity through cheap imports and international trade. Americans were encouraged to outsource production and trust foreign markets to supply their energy and materials. Everybody made money until dependence became a weapon. In March 2025, Ontario imposed a 25 percent surcharge on electricity exported to Michigan, Minnesota, and New York to pressure Washington over tariffs. The surcharge lasted only a day, but the shot heard round the world was unmistakable. A foreign government could deliberately raise energy costs for American businesses and families to influence American policy.

A nation need not be invaded to lose its sovereignty. It need only discover that foreign powers can cripple its factories, drive up its energy costs, and restrict its freedom of action without firing a shot. The warning is as old as the Republic: a nation that surrenders the means of its own survival eventually surrenders the freedom to govern itself. And by the time economic dependence becomes political submission, rebuilding what was surrendered may no longer be an option.

Consider diesel fuel. An American farmer can own his land, an American trucker can own his rig, and an American manufacturer can own his factory. Yet their operating costs are heavily influenced by international commodity markets, including a major diesel benchmark traded in London. Behind that market stands a network of powerful financial institutions. Meanwhile, Canada has demonstrated its willingness to use energy prices as political leverage, European governments have developed economic retaliation mechanisms, and major financial institutions have discussed using American dependence upon foreign capital as a negotiating weapon. Our economic vulnerabilities are well understood by people who may have every reason to exploit them.

But something remarkable is happening in America. In Minnesota, an enormous new iron ore processing plant is preparing to supply the raw materials for an $18 billion steelmaking program. In Maryland, the historic Sparrows Point industrial site is being transformed into a modern naval manufacturing center, supported by billions in private investment and military contracts. These projects represent more than construction jobs. They are efforts to restore America's ability to produce its own steel, manufacture its own military equipment, and rebuild the skilled workforce upon which an industrial civilization depends. Meanwhile, Europe faces serious challenges involving energy security, advanced semiconductor production, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. The industrial balance of power is changing.

October 12 is for celebrating the 525^th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of America, for on that day in 1492, the Great Admiral landed on Guanahani (now known as San Salvador or Watlings) island in the Bahamas.

We commemorate this as a true discovery in contrast to all the claims of Vikings, Chinese, Irish, and others who supposedly came earlier – for once and only after Columbus discovered America, it stayed discovered.

Unfortunately, Columbus Day is for most Americans just an excuse for a three-day weekend. What it should be is a commemoration and celebration of Western Civilization – which is why the Left hates Columbus and his holiday.

So there will be the usual spectacle of American Indians using the holiday to denounce the White Man and his genocidal war-mongering culture-destroying earth-murdering imperialism, blah blah blah – with self-hating White Liberals like the fascists of Antifajoining in, masochistically condemning their own civilization.

If it’s your misfortune to run into any of these folk bemoaning the nightmare and tragedy of our coming here, you might suggest to them that they abandon every vestige of the civilization they hate as so evil.
